NFL News Semi-OT: Aiyuk, 49ers heading for a divorce

Aiyuk, sources say, has failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in other team activities in recent months, and the 49ers have grown increasingly frustrated with the receiver’s lack of communication.

The 49ers, sources say, responded by voiding the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for 2026, asserting that the absences amounted to a failure to fulfill his contractual obligations. Aiyuk, according to multiple league sources, told NFL Players Association representatives that he did not want to fight the move via an official grievance. That would clear the way for his expected release at season’s end.

Aiyuk did not respond to a text message seeking comment. His agent, Ryan Williams, declined to comment. A spokesman for the 49ers declined to comment.

In voiding Aiyuk’s future guarantees, the 49ers can recover a significant portion of the contract. His 2026 option bonus would have paid out $24.935 million. He stood to earn a $1.215 million base salary for the 2026 season, as well as a $100,000 workout bonus and roster bonuses of $750,000 per game.

Aiyuk has not yet played this season, and while the 49ers are holding out hope, a reconciliation appears unlikely.

Sounds like he's not responding to anyone's reaching out to him, including teammates. Could be caused by a number of things, including post injury depression. There's no way to gauge what he'll be worth next year.

As far as luck being a factor in this season, the first thing I'd point to is how we dodged many, many bullets by failing to secure some of the high-profile receiver options like Aiyuk and Ridley. Jeebus. And that Diggs has worked out against the strong suspicion of many.

Loved the player he was in 2023. Next year will be 2926 though. He’s now having a bad recovery from injury and seemingly has a bad attitude and/or mental health issues or something.

Obviously the team should do their homework on him for whenever he’s available but my first reaction is PASS. If maybe they think he just needs a fresh start and/or he’s cheap then I guess consider it.

He played in their first 7 games after the extension last year then he tore his ACL and started this season on IR as a result. Their original expectation was that he’d be back by week 10. That’s a lot of missed games but it’s a torn ACL so nothing particularly weird about it. Something seems off with him now though leading up to the release. He seems like a head case or maybe just struggling with something mentally.
