I can give you a million backup OT contracts. Let's not lose sight of how this discussion was framed. You suggested he sign a 3 year deal at backup money. I pointed how such contract doesn't really exist in the NFL. Teams don't typically give players who are not start quality at that position 3 years. Even 2 years is really rare unless it's a backup someone is banking on becoming a starter. And when you sign 1 or even 2 year deals, you constantly find yourself on the FA market. And if you didn't play during that last contract, it's harder and harder to market yourself as playable depth without tape of you actually playing to sell teams on. So if you're going the short term contract route as a backup you usually want to go somewhere that you have a shot of playing time at because that's how you'll be able to market yourself as playable depth on the next deal. Please give a comparable contract for a LT that has acknowledged that he is a career backup and well understands that he is NOT starter quality.
Some players should try to maximize their carrers by understanding their abilities and possibilities.
Extending Tonga will solidify the line through 2027, including starters and backups.
To me, that is worth a lot.
SIGNED THROUGH
2028 Barmore
2028 Milton
2028 Tonga (after 3-year extension)
2028 Farmer
2027 Gregory (2028 RFA)
2026 Durden (2027 ERFA)
Again, you're suggesting something that's unconventional with seemingly no precedent in the league right now. How much are you willing to commit on a 3 year term to a backup OT that's enough security where it doesn't make sense for him to go year to year?
