NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

Yeah no one should be worried about him wanting to come here. That won’t be the issue. The issue will be money and trade compensation.
The Pats have a ton of cap space and their QB and LT are rookie contracts. This is the time you can spend money on a WR like AJ Brown.

Compensation is the real question though. For a 2nd rd pick I think AJ Brown is well worth it. With maybe a conditional mid round pick.

Right. I think that's why they got the White and Gugger trades out of the way when they did. So it doesn't interfere with the game this week.
Interesting.. I'm glad that Jennings for example didn't get moved..because he serves a purpose here.. especially as the weather turns in NE.. having guys that set the edge and stop the run are needed commodities. It was inevitable for Dugger and became obvious for white..

If we picked up his current contract, what would our compensation to him look like?

At first blush, the contract seems OK.

I'd say it comes down to how Vrabel, Cowden and Roseman agree to split AJs hit... both organizations would assume some type of cap absorbing assuming.

This is the perfect time to strike.. it's probably more likely they go after a rusher like Thibidouax...

From OTC. Here is Diggs

For Comparison here is Diggs.

So AJ would be cheaper than Diggs the next 2 seasons.

I haven't been a fan of signing a WR.

However, this does seem to be a fine opportunity. The roster really would be much better with AJ active going into the playoffs instead of Chism.

People who understand the cap will need to tell me if this is true or not, but Lazar said that the Pats are unlikely to extend Gonzo until they kick in his fifth year option. That's the benefit of the fifth year option for first round picks. Why extend him before they get the benefit of that?

They can activate his 5th year option after this season, from the time the season ends to sometime in the spring (probably May). At the moment, due to his injuries he is only eligible for the basic extension (playing 75% of the snaps this year, or making a probowl would change that) the 5th year would be for 11.8 million fully guaranteed.....that is a steep discount from where the top corners in the league are (top 5 average 25.6)

Okay, so that's one reason why we have to wait until after the season to do an extension?

Yes, the 5th year is much lower than a top corner makes. This is always the case in the last year of a rookie contract of a top player. That does NOT mean that the player should accept discount and take a lowball extension. He should expect market price for the 4 years of an extension including guarantees and a large signing bonus. Of course, the patriots can gamble that Gonzo has a poor year and wait for free agency when Gonzo would get less. Of course, that "less" would be from another team.

He's a freak. 6'5 260 lb. OLBs that run in the 4.5s don't come around often. BB was a fan & he probably would've been the pick if we didn't pick Mac:

Belichick spoke about Miami’s first-round rookie, Phillips. Belichick said, “This a player that started at UCLA, then sat out a couple years, transferred to Miami. Very athletic, fast, explosive. You know, probably one of the best test athletes, honestly, that I’ve ever evaluated. His numbers and his size, and his athletic skills go up there against anybody in any era. So, big, explosive player on the edge that they added.”

He could be in a 3 man rotation with Landry & Chaisson making them more efficient (ex. 2024 eagles). While he'd be expensive to re-sign I think he's worth it as a rental & there's still a chance he'd be here longterm.

Kayvon Thibodeaux and Phillips are the 2 guys I think could make the greatest difference for 2025. Both very unlikely.

Phillips a FA in 2026, should be a primary target.

Well the argument becomes the team already has 5th year control, nothing to be done about that.....and it is pretty standard, the player is going to make about the same either way.....The best example is the current highest paid corner in the league....Sauce Gardner.....his cap hit this year is just over 9mill...but his average over the contract is 30.

I never said anything about a discount, it was just about what he is going to get paid in year 5.

I am seeing tweets like this online. Not sure it is true. Probably not. But I figured I would post it.

That is a great trade for us. Always liked Amani Hooker and he definitely falls a need.

EDIT: Did this trade actually happen?

I'm looking...don't see anything else yet

Hooker?? I mean we do need S help.

I was about to suggest a EDGE seems likely with so many apparently available.
RB possible too.
WR would be most splashy - but historically is too hard to get up to speed and be helpful in JMD's system for a 1/2 year rental.
