I am also a BB+TB guy, but clearly once Tom decided to move on Bill had lots of opportunities to show he was a GOAT GM and coach and came up really short quite often. That continues to this day, IMO.
It's pretty clear whatever he was putting on the table was no longer of interest to the NFL after he left here.
Here's the list of coaches that got gigs in 2024:
- Jim Harbaugh: Los Angeles Chargers
- Mike Macdonald: Seattle Seahawks
- Jerod Mayo: New England Patriots
- Raheem Morris: Atlanta Falcons
- Dave Canales: Carolina Panthers
- Ben Johnson: Chicago Bears
- Dan Quinn: Washington Commanders
Here's the list of coaches that got gigs in 2025:
Ben Johnson: Chicago Bears
Mike Vrabel: New England Patriots
Liam Coen: Jacksonville Jaguars
Pete Carroll: Las Vegas Raiders
Kellen Moore: New Orleans Saints
Aaron Glenn: New York Jets
Brian Schottenheimer: Dallas Cowboys
Obviously he wasn't coming back here, so if you take us off the table that's twelve chances at NFL HC gigs and
Bill went 0-12.
There wasn't one NFL team that thought he was good enough to let him run their team.
Instead Fat Mike shopped around the "33rd NFL Team" flim-flam story till they found a CFB team desperate enough to buy in.
Now UNC has a program that is a national laughing stock yet are in so deep financially and contractually that they have no choice but let things run their course.
He's turned the narrative from one of greatness to one of dodginess in a remarkably short period of time.
