Yet in his assessment he saw a lot of flaws with those 2 QBs. The one he really liked was Daniels. That is true and it's likely BB would believe JJ McCarthy or Bo Nix has a much better chance of being a franchise QB than Maye does and that's one reason why he would draft one of them.
BB only had two picks in the top third of the draft that I recall - Seymour (6) and Mayo (10). Warren was 13 and I thought that was a trade down then a trade back up. Mayo was a trade up. I agree with the last part that he often traded down when he had picks in the latter part of round 1.
He actually said that Maye is the protoype of what you want for an NFL QB: big, fast, mobile, strong accurate arm.
Then said his footwork needs a lot of help, and that he tends to lock onto primary reads without coming off him. Drake at the time was 21 years old. Daniels had 3 or 4 years on him.
I see this as very normal talk, not as a dismissal of Maye at all. And like I said, I do not disagree that Belichick would have wanted a QB who was ready to go as he was getting pretty old in 2023. That could have been Daniels. It could have been Mayfield, and then you develop a guy like Maye if Daniels is off the board.
