I loved the post-game clip that had Vrabel telling the team that even though they have a LOT to improve on, they need to celebrate the win because they are so damned hard to come by in the NFL, because it's true. You do not get anything extra for style points or the quality of the win. No one remembers whether a win was by a point or who it was against in January when they are figuring out the seeding for the playoffs. And the win against Carolina counts the same as the one against Buffalo. All they do is add up wins and give you a ticket in.

But it is our job to break down this game and figure out what to extol and what damn. It was a win, not a satisfying win (at least for me) but a win, nonetheless. And after tomorrow needs to be put aside for the next road game. But for now, let's look at this game

1. Josh McDaniel - Josh has to be give a TON of credit for getting the offense to this point and even more credit for the continuing development of Maye into what he has become. It truly is amazing. HOWEVER, like everything on this team there is room for improvement and that goes for Josh too,

For me it comes in the run game. Vs Carolina I thought we were trending in the right direction with a number of misdirection runs which were successful. We saw a few in Buffalo too. Today I saw NONE. If I were a LB running against this run game, it would be a breeze. EVERY damn run was straight into the line with no misdirection or pulls or anything. Just straight off tackle or up the middle, with the only an occasional play action pass to break the monotony. When we start to play better teams, we will need to have a better more threatening run game than we have now. And until our OL improves to the point where THEY are doing a better job, it is up to Josh to develop a more creative run game to give our player an edge. Just my 2 cents.

2. Drake Maye - I find it stunning that with every game he plays he seems to find ways to improve on his weaknesses. I've complained from the first game about him giving up when pressured quickly up the middle and taking a sack when it looks like he had time to escape. Well today there were at least 2 times that happened where he DID escape and make a play and he had only one sack and that was for just ]a 2 yd loss.

He got robbed of his first 300 yd game, but that's just a matter of time. His down field accuracy just keeps getting better just as his receivers are getting more separation. 260 yds and only a about 60 total to his usual targets of Diggs, Henry, and RB's. Nothing but good things to see at the QB position, with the understanding that it can get so much better moving forward.

3. The OL - is a solid to good pass blocking group and a sub par work in progress in the run game. Unfortunately, the run game requires more "continuity" to be effective than pass blocking. So, I supposed that it should get better as they become more familiar with each other, and Josh hopefully becomes more creative. But clearly this is a case of 2 steps forward, one step back in the area of the run game.

4. Receivers - Watching Boutte today, I thought to myself was he is what we drafted Polk to be. A possession receiver who will win most of the 50-50 balls thrown his way. He is playing great and has EARNED himself prominent role as a WR.

Pop made a big appearance today and would have been noteworthy if they had given him his well earned 2nd TD on such a brutal call. I believe he will continue to find a role in Josh's offense, just some weeks more than others. Diggs, Boutte, Henry and RB throws are 1,2,3,4 on the priority list it seems so Pop will have some weeks when he 'Pops" and some weeks when he doesn't.

5. Defense - DL - Have to say I was a bit disappointed in Williams and Barmore today. I thought they'd end up being more disruptive than they ended up being. They did turn up the heat in the run game in the second half essentially shutting it down, but I thought they'd be in Rattler's face all game, and they weren't. Again, it was better in the 2nd half but not by a lot like with the run game.

I'm not calling for blitz's and 5 and six man rushes, but more stunts and crosses between the edge and interior guys to create some movement. Instead, we seemed to get too many of what I would call controlled bull rushes. We got a couple of sacks, but I bet the hurries, hits and pressures were down this week. I would like to see some overload blitz looks like Rex Ryan used to run so effectively. Essentially that is when you overload one side to create a numbers advantage and leave guys on the other side with literally no one to block. The end result is on one side you want to create a guy with a free run at the QB, while not having to weaken your pass coverage.

6. The LBs are really growing on me. We aren't seeing any of the misses we saw earlier this season as they are stacking live tackling reps over 6 games. Spillane had double digits again (11) and Ellis had 8 as his play improves weekly.

7. I commented on the gdp that Duggar was going to take a LOT of **** for that first big play, and he shouldn't. It was a bad scheme design by the coaches. You should never leave a box Safety alone on an island with their best receiver and no help. You don't put your players in positions where they are bound to fail. You wouldn't put Marcus to defend the A gap against the run; you don't put Duggar to cover Olave deep. That is a coach's error where the player ends up taking the blame.

The other thing that bugged me on defense was there was a point in time where it looked like Olave was just GASHING the Pats, and I had to wonder, if you are lucky enough to have a true shut down CB, why aren't you using him to shut down that main WR threat that day. Just asking

8. ST's - Chism did a good job returning KO's today. I think he found a role that will get him on the game day roster going forward. All but 2 of his returns got outside the 30 and the 2 that didn't make it to 28 which is like a draw, with those past the 30 a win for the receiving team. Our coverage team only had 2 returns past the 30 and were strong again (except for one IIRC). Overall a solid effort by ST's as it remains a consistent plus week to week.

9. - Things are going well. 3 wins in a row and a very likely 4th in a week. But watching Davis and Landry laid out on the field made it clear to me how precarious our situation is. We are still a rebuilding team who is just an injury or two away from disaster.

Fortunately, both Davis and Landry returned to action, though I doubt either will practice next Wednesday. Still, it made me realize that we have a way to go to be a true contender. It takes time a few good drafts to develop quality depth to survive the kind of injuries we are seeing teams like the 49ers, TB, etc are going through.

I think we need to add more athleticism at S and CB and one of Ponder, Jones, or Swinson need to develop into a serviceable edge rusher. When exactly is the trade deadline?

OK; that's it for now. I don't want to fall asleep at the keyboard. I'm going to watch the 2nd half again to look more closely at the running attack and defense. Hopefully KCSEVEN will bless us with some of his all 22 film insights. Look forward to your feedback and good night.

I'll take the WR's please ken: glad Pop Douglas is back: Boutte what can you say?? I think his ceiling is a poor man's Stefon Diggs. Glad we finally had a Chism sighting. Chris Olave if he's available we should be interested he's a very good WR.

Great insights well expressed, as always. Thanks Ken!

I’m going to argue that there’s not really cause for as much concern as you expressed. To my eyes the game wasn’t quite as close as the final score says it was. It wasn’t thorough domination but it felt like the Pats were able to make more plays and to keep the Saints from making plays. So I don’t share some of your criticisms and concerns about the offensive playcalling and defensive line play. They didn’t need to go deep into the playbook and show their hand with plays they might need against a stronger opponent, and they didn’t need to dial up pressure with stunts etc. I had to watch the replay so I already knew the final score and was surprised to see how early in the third quarter both offenses stopped being productive. It really felt to me like both teams had taken each other’s measure and already knew the score by then.

My main concern with this team is Chiasson and Landry against the run. I dont think we can keep going with 2 light guys on the edge who get washed out frequently and who seem lost diagnosing the run.

Great stuff as always, Ken.

I did not expect the Pats to play up to the level of the Buffalo game, and they didn't. They still won, on the road, and should have won comfortably.

As Vrabel said, it's hard to win. Good teams overcome adversity, injuries, and let-downs, and still manage to win most of the games they should. By that standard, we are becoming - dare I say it - a good team.

Look at Philly, anointed a "sure" repeat team at 4-0, now 4-2, with a loss to the lowly Giants. Detroit the next "best" team, losing by 2 scores to KC. It's tough.

The flaws are there, as you pointed out. But no team is without flaws. the trick is to overcome them.

Vrabel is striking a beautiful balance of pushing the team and giving them love. It's clear that they are developing confidence in themselves. They are also raising the bar - they don't need to be told this was a flawed performance. No basking in your own accolades. Just a few hours of enjoyment, then back to work. On to Tennessee. What do you think the chances are Vrabel takes his foot off the pedal this week? 0.

The Pats have 11 games, all winnable, will be favored in all except for TB and Buffalo. Take none for granted, just keep climbing the mountain. If they sustain just the level of play that they did yesterday, they will win at least the majority, which would be 10 wins. Add a running game and clean up some OL and second level issues on defense, and ...

The Pats are no longer a cellar team. The penthouse is not that far away.

Just keep working, and enjoy the ride.

The refereeing on the field wasn't just incompetent and haphazard, but outrageously biased. The final straw for me was the non-call of DPI on Hollins the very play after the bomb to Diggs was called back because his hand brushed the DB as he ran.

In contrast, credit to the booth reviews for getting three calls right in favour of the Patriots: the fumble, the Boutte catch inbounds, and the sneak for the two-point conversion.

The Pats postgame show (and, if I remember right, the announcers) disputed what happened in the case of the two-point conversion, so I checked the rules and what I learned was interesting.

First, the two-point conversion wasn't reviewed on a challenge. It was reviewed automatically because it was a "scoring play". I had assumed that it wouldn't qualify for automatic review because the refs initially ruled that the try had failed, so it wasn't a scoring play. But that isn't the case. "Scoring play" includes those that would have resulted in a score if not for the ruling on the field.

ARTICLE 2. REPLAY OFFICIAL REVIEWS.
All plays that result in a score for either team, or that would have resulted in a score if not for an on-field ruling, are subject to automatic review by the Replay Official." i
This includes, but is not limited to:
— Touchdowns (and plays that could have been touchdowns).
— Field goals and extra points (successful or unsuccessful).
— Two-point conversion attempts.
The Replay Official will initiate the review of all such plays.
Also, there didn't have to be "indisputable visual evidence" to overturn the original ruling:

ARTICLE 3. STANDARD FOR REVERSING AN ON-FIELD RULING.
The Replay Official and designated members of the Officiating Department shall make every effort to obtain all pertinent angles prior to making a decision.
A decision will be reversed only when the available evidence is clear and obvious (formerly “indisputable visual evidence”) that the ruling on the field was incorrect.
If the Replay Official does not have clear and obvious visual evidence as to which ruling is correct, or if the evidence is inconclusive, the ruling on the field will stand.
People still use the phrase "indisputable visual evidence", but it is time to move on from it.

Kudos to Ken once again, well written and very insightful..
Has been a while since the Pats have won 3 in a row, it seems in the NFL culture sustainability is something you learn and believe in. Their attitude has been instilled by Vrabel, who am liking more each week.
Concerned with the run game, from my barco lounger it looks very predictable and lacks innovation, know the Pats do not want to show their cards, but gotta do better than this.
The officiating sucked, the NFL has to look at the performance of the refs in this game.. the Diggs OPI penalty was ********..
Every week Drake Maye is showing more and more he is our future and now even better than expected.
It wasn't a pretty win, but there are no style points in the NFL.
Remember the discussion last week about the lack of downfield passing?? Guess we can put that to rest now..

Said it in the other thread, as ugly as it was and as bad as the saints are this was a huge win for us. They avoided the ‘letdown’ game after buffalo. Might’ve struggled a little on d but they came out hot on offense, would have pulled away if not for the refs screwing them repeatedly. Alot of younger teams would have lost this game but we overcame some stuff. That fluke 4th down fail with the bad snap, and again the refs. That is alot to overcome esp on the road, can’t downplay it

Excellent post
FYI, Williams was battling an illness and played a season low 59% of the snaps.
Barmore had 3 pressures and a tackle for loss but without watching tape hard to tell his overall play.

Announcers did mention about halfway thru the game that Rattler was getting rid of the ball in like 2.16 seconds which would make it impossible to get pressure. On the season coming in Rattler was 2.56 time to throw which is excellent.

So good scheme and first read getting open made pass rush moot.
Also made them dink and dunk after the first play and bend but don't break defense worked.

PFK,

During the game I was posting that we are playing off coverage..we have very good CBs in gonzo, Davis and Marcus.. thier strength is man coverage. But I get the thought was rattler would beat them. Rattler is likely the same level of QB Tua is.. those types of QB seem to give us the most problems for some reason.. Milton has been playing on on ankle.. Landry and Chaisson are banged up.. the defensive line just looked lethargic.. as expected was alot of energy spent for that Buffalo game. The LBs played well yesterday. Dugger is a liability and those who thought Hawkins wasn't good we missed him yesterday.

When you're a team trying to rise - every win is an amazing win. I think that, while unsexy, A Jennings is a contributor you want on the field to assist the run D. I hope he's back soon.

Looking ahead, another winnable game vs a weak opponent could see NE 5-2. Seems wild considering how down I was on this squad after the LV game...

The only thing in this teams way is themselves.. injuries, ect. Also guys like Chaisson, Williams are playing through things. I noticed this yesterday specifically.. Vrabel is going to be amped up for this one... Drake gets to go back and get some redemption...

Great write up Ken.

I've always been a fan of McDaniels and was happy to see him return. He's not perfect but he's got a proven track record and the early results are very promising.

The OL could use more young talent but that will have to wait until next offseason. I'm not sure how much improvement we can expect this year in the run game. Hopefully we can go from bottom of the league to the 16-20 range. Henderson seems to struggle finding the holes and seams, maybe as he gains more experience that improves and the run game does too. Shoutout to Will Campbell who I thought had another good game.

The WR play I was thrilled with today. Douglas and Boutte had been quiet for some time and it was nice to see them both step up. I'm not sold on this group long term but they are adequate for now.

You mentioned we are still a rebuilding team and lack depth. I couldn't agree more. Fortunately the injury bug hasn't hit.

I kind of disagree about the LBs. I'm glad we aren't missing tackles but we can't cover the TE, got gashed against Buffalo. Granted Allen to Kincaid is one of the better QB to WR connections, but still. Bowers killed us too. I expect it to be a problem all year.

On the bomb to Olave Dugger can't let the guy get behind him. I wouldn't criticize Dugger if he gave up a 20 yard out or a DPI but you can not let the guy get behind you. Safety play 101. We're lucky it wasn't a TD.

I too am curious why they didn't have Gonzo shadow Olave.

And I want to say Marcus Jones had another big play but I'm blanking on what it was at the moment. He's had a really nice start to the year. I can see why he was voted captain. A lot of posters want an upgrade to Alex Austin and I'm always in favor of upgrading the roster but how many teams have 4 quality CBs? I'm guessing zero.

Lastly who can forget Drake Maye. Kid is unbelievable. We got a good one. Loved seeing them open up the offense and defensive coordinators now need to worry about the entire field.

4-2 feels damn good. Go Pats

Also wanted to say Maye, Campbell, Barmore, Williams and Gonzales is about as good as a foundation a fan could hope for.

The refereeing on the field wasn't just incompetent and haphazard, but outrageously biased. The final straw for me was the non-call of DPI on Hollins the very play after the bomb to Diggs was called back because his hand brushed the DB as he ran.
I was screaming at the tv on this one.

Back to back plays called by the same ref!!

Thanks Ken, as always a nice summary of the game’s highs and lows. Usually my first read on Monday morning.

Name me 1 other team that has anything close to:

1. A franchise (likely top-5) QB on a rookie contract
2. A franchise LT on a rookie contract
3. A franchise CB on a rookie contract
4. 2 cornerstone DTs
5. An average rest of the roster
6. A really solid coaching staff
7. A favorable cap situation

As hellish as the past 6 years have been, no team is in a better position looking forward.

Great write up Patfanken I always look forward to your idle thoughts and KCSEVEN's breakdown of the game they are some of the highlights on the forum. There are many other knowledgeable fans on the forum, but they cover other areas such as the draft.

I have to say this may be the best forum I have joined and I am glad I did.

Agreed. I don't know the other NFL teams super well but it's hard to imagine a better set up. If we keep winning and make the playoffs we will be an attractive spot for FAs next spring.

I agree.

FA is about $$$ first, of course. Location and state income tax are factors. But having a contending team and a favorable coach are huge factors. Vrabel is charismatic and seems to be a player's coach. I'm hoping FAs will get the message.
