There are so many things to talk about with this game all around. The CB trio and how that looks. The OL really coming together with Campbell now 4 games in. At this point you can comfortably say, yes he was worth that pick.
I still question if this team is doing enough to get Williams and Henderson involved. And yes, I think Chism should have a look. Henry has looked maybe the best he has in his career these first 4 games. The play of the DL and particularly Milton Williams, who has shown yes. He is worth that big contract.
But we all know, the real story is Maye. How good is he? How good will he be? We are 1 quarter into year 2 of what we believed would be a 3 year project not unlike the very raw Josh Allen years.
I know we are being positive, but i think we are STILL not giving Maye enough credit. We don't need to revisit how bad his cast was in year 1. Let's focus on year 2. He is now learning to play with a decent overall 52. Not every single thing will fall on him this year like it did last year. He has a run game he can lean on. An OL who can block and a defense that is representative.
His offensive cast overall is still bottom 10 in the league. Maybe bottom 5? But it is still much improved over last year. He now needs to learn how to win. And also needs to learn how to manage a game in the NFL. Now that he doesn't need to create something every play or have to carry a subpar run game and has a D is a bit more dynamic. He now has to learn how to manage this. When to try to make plays and when to not cause he has other players he can depend on who won't blow it automatically if he doesn't pull a rabbit out of his ass. This is a new skill he has to learn. How to win games, now that they are indeed winnable. This is still something he has to work on.
But overall while we are only 4 game in year 2 of the Drake Maye experiment. It is clear he has taken a step. And he is doing it through to not great players behind a not great OL. They aren't trash anymore, but still not great. Imagine how he'd look if he had a true #1 WR. Just throwing that out there. But in 4 games with a now decent OL we have seen a vast improvement. He has had 2 almost perfectly clean games. That is about what he had last year. He is getting down better before hits come and he is more accurate.
Accuracy is still an issue even with his insane completion %. He still needs to make less mistakes. His first or second pass this game was highly questionable. But while his competition hasn't been great. It is hard to argue with 7 TDs 2 Ints +70%. Eventually you are who your numbers say you are. Now we needs wins to follow. And that means consistency.
