Guesses on the Active Roster for Sunday?

At 5'10" and running a 4.7 40 I don't see Chism on the outside much. Usually the boundary players are tall, fast, or ideally tall and fast. Why do you see Chism outside?
I think he sets up routes well and can create separation based on head on nods and hip twitch. He is also very quick out of his breaks and that will create some separation as well. As long as he has learned to attack leverages, he will be great on slants, speed outs and crossers/digs.

There are several big fast guys that do not have a nuanced approach and try and win strictly on athleticism. Chism could play Z but he will have to win on nuance.

It was reported that Chism's 4.7 wasn't accurate. I forget who mentioned it.. Maybe @manxman2601 knows.

Edelman lined up all over the place. So has Douglas. Whether or not Chism can is another story.
That's what he recorded at his pro day. I have no reason to doubt it.

I agree that Chism likely won't be dressed sadly. The thing to remember is that Maye largely practiced with Douglas rather than Chism who tended to practice, and play, with the backup QBs.

IF we know Josh McDaniels: he ain't sitting a player that plays inside numbers. The Strength of his passing game: need a guy to give Pop Douglas a breather.

That could be Diggs. He ran 53% of his routes from the slot last year, he certainly has that experience. Williams also ran about 25% of his routes from the slot. I can’t imagine we will dress 2 slot guys. Remember I’m as big a Chism guy as anyone, but I think he sits this week.

You're not helping: the more WR's the merrier.

I'm curious where you got that Diggs ran 53% of his routes from the slot? Like, What site? I'd like to add it for reference purposes.

Granted, PFF stinks at their grading, but they tend to be on the nose when it comes to where people line up.

196 +226 = 422.

196/422 = 46%. Still significant an does support the idea that he can line up there.

I just asked Google, so take the accuracy for what’s it worth.

Funny tho, when I originally asked it was 53%. Just checked again it says 61%, unless I somehow read it wrong the first time.

Yeah let's forget all that running and blocking nonsense. Let's take the NFL by storm and unviel the new 10 wide formation. Receivers receiving options galore! All Maye has to do is avoid the 1 free rusher and somebody will get open. We can call it the 1000 formation cuz that's how many points we'll score.

I’m afraid you won’t. This is regular season. Coaches are setting the lineup they think has best chance to win, not to evaluate players.
Josh will go with the WRs he has the most confidence in: Diggs, Pop, Hollins, Boutte are sure bets as established veterans.
If he plays one of the rookies I think he will have more confidence and see more value in Chism than Williams.
And Chism is the fair haired UDFA favorite this year.
Thats why I think Williams will sit unless all WRs are active. I hope he’s active. I’d like to see him in game action. But that’s how I’m reading the coaches’ minds.

Here’s my guess at the roster. I pretty much followed the unofficial depth chart on the team site. I think 3 backups for 5 positions on the OL is just too thin, so couldn’t have all WRs active. It’s a numbers game. On D I thought about going with 4 CB to open another slot for the last WR, using a S to help in coverage, but that seemed too much risk for too little reward. So one WR has to sit.
EDIT TO ADD: on further consideration I can see them going with just 5 instead of 6 for the IDL, if they really want all WRs active. But I’m thinking Vrabes will want a full rotation to keep the DL fresh, and that’s my preference too.

OFFENSE
QB: (2) Maye, Dobbs (DeVito emergency QB3)
TE: (2) Henry, Hooper
FB: (1) Westover
RB: (3) Rham, Gibson, Henderson
WR: (5) Diggs, Douglas, Hollins, Boutte, Chism
OL: (9) Campbell, Lowe, Wilson, Wallace, Bradford, Brown, Onwenu, Moses, Bryant
=============
22 players active on offensive roster

DEFENSE
NT: (2) Tonga, Gregory
DT: (4) Barmore, Williams, Farmer, Pharms
OLB: (4) Landry, Jennings, Chaisson, White
ILB: (4) Spillane, Mapu, Ellis, Gibbens
CB: (5) Davis, Jones, Austin, James, Woods
S: (4) Dugger, Woodson, Hawkins, Schooler
=============
23 players active on defensive roster

SPECIAL TEAMS
K: (1) Borregales
P: (1) Baringer
LS: (1) Ashby
=============
3 players active on special teams

22+23+3=48 players active total on game day roster

INACTIVE: (5) Gonzalez, Kyle Williams, Pettus, Ponder, DeVito (emergency QB)
A fine list!

Personally, I'd have Pettus active over Chism. Douglas is OK as a BACKUP gameday punt returner. If Marcus is out for even a game, I would expect Chism to be active.

NFL Pro says 111 routes out wide and 133 routes in the slot. So combining the two sources, we can say his slot snaps were more likely to be passing plays (68%) than his snaps out wide were (49%).

(A little margin for error as NFL Pro has him with 4 “tight” routes while PFF has him with 1 “inline” snap at all. Not sure what the difference is.)
