You miss on a 1st rounder under a controlled salary and replace him with a "middling" FA? How is that replacing apples with apples? No you don't, you simply sign a FA with a middling salary to replace the middling draft miss. There is no difference between a draft pick signed to a middling contract and a FA signing a middling contract. Same thing.
I'm explaining why the NEP lack talent and roster depth. If it were so easy as you outline then they should haven't gone 8-24 the last 3 years and have practice squadders make the 53 this year. Sorry but you also need to think through the last 5 years and how we reached this point. It does not play out that way. No NFL team has amazing drafts every year. In your scenario every team in the league is f!cked. You need to think it through.
David Andrews is the same. Cut with a failed physical, Strange did not fail his physical like D Andrews, but basically neither player will ever be the same. Sad when it happens.100% agree. He'll never shake that label here. But I think he's done physically. Today's linemen have to do a lot more athletically, and I think his knee remains an issue and it's probably what did him in here.
Now you are mixing up timeframes. You are changing the discussion. You stated poor drafts in 2019 and 2020 were having a negative effect today and now you are talking about players on rookie salaries. Dude, pick your discussion point and stick to it. 2019 and 2020 have nothing to do with rookie contracts in 2025.You miss on a 1st rounder under a controlled salary and replace him with a "middling" FA? This again misses the point. I explained it last year, you must have missed it. The reason BB kept the team relevant every year was 1. TB12, and 2. he consistently let over priced players go and signed GREAT middling players (like Vrable). We are 8 - 24 because the GM did not sign the right FA players to replace our draft misses (that includes BB swinging and missing in FA in 2021). Every team has two bites of the apple, the draft and FA. If the team misses on both bites (which the Pats did from 2020 to 2024) then they end up 8 - 24. It is not only the draft as you stated.I'm explaining why the NEP lack talent and roster depth. This has been going on for awhile. Here in New England we all still complain about the WRs we missed when we took N'Keal Harry. Meanwhile, all those great WRs are gone from the original teams that drafted them, and here we are still talking about 2019 and Harry. Not a single WR left on his team: AJ Brown, Deebo Samuel, Hollywood Brown, DK Metcalf, Mecole Hardman, Arcega-Whiteside, Parris Cambell, Isabella, Diontae Johnson, Jalen Hurd. Now you are mixing up timeframes. I really wonder about this idea of bad FA signings in 2021.This again misses the point. I explained it last year, you must have missed it. The reason BB kept the team relevant every year was 1. Got it?
So us having N'Keal Harry is the same as those teams drafting those receivers? lol You seem to be ignoring the fact that AJ Brown got a first round pick back in return, Deebo helped his team make two super bowls and got the team back a 5th, Hollywood Brown and a third netted the Ravens a first round pick, and Metcalf got the Seahawks a second round pick. This has been going on for awhile. What does it say when the first 11 WRs picked in a draft aren't with their original teams 6 years later?
But yet we still talk about the miss! It's only relevant in evaluating the decision making of the former coaching staff, but has basically ZERO to do with current talent on the team.
Begs the question....
Is Wolf on a short leash in Foxboro? Vrabel seems to have total control of the roster. His only boss would be....Kraft?
I liked Chad Muma but since the Masterson signing I'm not so sore about it. I'm not crazy about Jack Gibbens and preferred an upgrade.Tell me, who got claimed that is going to take them to the promised land?
EDIT: by someone else. Who did they miss out on?
Not good enough without a TOP 5 QB. Add TB12 to the team along with those FAs, and maybe. But I still doubt it. The team needs a special WR/TE and a special DT/DE. Judon was good, not special. Heny is good, not special. Bourne, Agholor, and Mills are middling players that BB overpaid.I really wonder about this idea of bad FA signings in 2021.
Matthew Judon, Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Algholor, Jonnu White, Jalen Mills.
This seems like a pretty strong FA class to me.
They may wait a week or two before making that decision (basically after the LV game). I do think they sign a QB to the PS and go with only 2 on the 53 during the regular season.I wouldn't be surprised if DOBBS is the one they jettison.
Who cares? Not a big deal, the 49ers are desperate for castoffs. Not a good sign for the 49ers.Saw this coming as soon as he was released, he will be a 49er before days end.
49ers Reportedly Seeking Reunion With Patriots Castoff
The New England Patriots released this wide receiver on Wednesday, but the San Francisco 49ers might be moving in.nesn.com
You're going to be forever disappointed at FA classes with these standards. Not good enough without a TOP 5 QB. Add TB12 to the team along with those FAs, and maybe. But I still doubt it. Who is Jonnu White? LOL. Jonnu has the athleticism to be a Top 5 player, but he never realized that potential. BB way overpaid for Jonnu.
Again there are 2 bites at the apple. If the team misses on the draft, then FA is critical. Post 2019, BB missed on the draft and then in FA also. RK give BB a chance in 2021 in FA, and BB missed it. I am a BB fan, but he definitely faded.
Timeframes are irrelevant. I'm using them as examples specific to the NEP and their drafts from 2019 to 2024. Pick a 5 year window of any team that had ****ty drafts 4 out of 5 years in the salary cap era and it's the same issue. Now you are mixing up timeframes. You are changing the discussion. Easy on the lecturing on discussion points. Focus on the specific discussion which is the cascading effects on a team by missing on high draft choices consistently.

You forgot hit on players in the draft and UFA. Look at the teams that won Super Bowls. Most of the starters & top reserves were home grown. FA augmented the team building and was not THE way those teams were built. Aside from a punter and a return guy, when was the last player Bill drafted in the last 5 years who was an All-Pro or a more than 5 years a starter? Hint....it'll take you a few years to get the answer.
Vrabel was an anomaly. He was a pro bowler stuck behind Jason Gildon and Joey Porter.
They did fine in 2021 FA. Only miss was Jonnu Smith. They made the playoffs. Poor example.
I am guessing if Baker clears waivers, they'll dump someone else off their PS and put him on it.Pretty happy with the PS so far. Its basically the team that's been here practicing.
The timing with Baker is weird though. Why did he need to "make the 53" for 24 hours, unless they really want him on the PS and was worried about a waiver claim. But, they filled up the PS, and didn't sign him.
Oh well, Webb & Jiles showed more ability to actually catch a ball than Baker ever did.
