So, if a team claims a vested veteran, does that mean it is liable for everything left on the contract except the signing bonus?
A vested vet is not “claimed”. They are released from their contract. So they become a free agent. there’s nothing to assume. Any guaranteed money is paid by former team, offset by anything they get from whoever they sign with. So it’s their choice where to sign, and for how much. If there’s a guarantee on the former contract they probably won’t get more after being cut so they have no incentive to demand more than vet minimum.

Talk about lipstick on a pig... he was atrocious last year. He's better than that but let's not pretend he played like a world beater that just need to be properly used to be effective.
It's not that important at this stage, but Kendrick Bourne was a) never a #1 WR, and b) was coming off an ACL tear in 2024 that he suffered during the 2023 season with the Patriots. His 2024 season was not distinguished and chaotic due to a bad situation on every level. As an 8-year veteran in the NFL, he brings maturity and an understanding of NFL defenses that is valuable in a Josh McDaniels read-and-react offense. No one expects him lead this team in receiving. If the Patriots get 40 receptions and 500 yards from him in supporting role to Diggs, Hunter, & Douglas, it will be good contribution to a rebuilding team. I believe that Vrabel and the coaching staff are building a team around a group of veterans in every position group in support of their second year QB and a large group of talented young players. Landry, Moses, Peppers, Bourne, Henry, Hooper, Diggs & Dobbs - solid guys.

I think he will see the field sparingly but will be used in certain coverages that allow him to play aggressively and instinctively. Maybe 20% of snaps.
I will be all for it
He had a injury he is still recovering from
Not really his system to play for a majority of the snaps
But he will be fine in 20-30 % of the snaps when it plays to his strengths

After the trade deadline yes, before the deadline a “cut” veteran is released from his contract and becomes essentially the same as a free agent.

It was Sidy Sow getting most of the backup reps at RG. Just had a look at PFF and in the games at least, neither played a single snap at RG.
Brilliant cut the only backup you have at one position and keep 8 WRs. Make it make sense?

I assume they plan to make a lot of changes to the roster in the next few days which will address these imbalances.

Of course. This is a tough business. After looking over the cuts, there are a lot of QBs. I wonder if the Patriots pick up a 3rd QB in the next 48 hours and cut one of the WRS. The OL cuts are pretty extensive as well.

They most definitely do but there's no guarantee what you will find and so it still would make sense to hang onto your 4th guard (something most teams carry) compared to your 8th wr (which I've never seen before). Then when you find a better guard you cut a guard.

That makes sense but I suspect one or two WRs go on IR plus they still think they can trade one. They also probably don’t love many of the guys they cut, regardless of position.

Saving one one or two for IR or getting a 6th round pick next year does nothing to alleviate my fears of carrying one guard, one rookie center, and one failed tackle as the entirety of your guard position. It's nuts.

Been busy, just catching up. Not much to add:

- Roster clearly a work in progress, not balanced and too many fringe players.
- Sad but not surprised about Bradyn Swinson. He never really looked like the guy we saw on tape from LSU.
- Some good talent cut from around the league, could see half a dozen roster upgrades.

I mean when you really break it down the entire experience of your whole guard unit consists of Onwenwu and 4 weeks of preseason for Wilson and even less for Wallace because I don't think they switched him to guard until week 2 or even 3 of camp.

Oh and you gave your back up center a couple reps too but he's kind of busy being the back up center.

That's it.

Easy. They aren’t done yet.
I covered that a few posts ago. We prioritized an 8th WR over a 4th guard. Obviously we aren't done but there is no guarantee as to what we will find. It just seems irresponsible to risk that for an 8th WR instead.

Very high odds that every guard we cut will be available Wednesday. Extremely high combination of odds we either get someone better or one of them back post moving some folks to IR.

They’ll add a 3rd QB. Quite a few out there and possibly will be added to practice squad initially but find his way to the 53 once a spot opens to be eligible as the emergency QB.

Spots will open up. Westover and Pettus could still be cut. Bourne, Jennings and possibly Dugger could still be traded or, in the case of Bourne and Jennings, still be released.

Also, 4 veterans of any experience can be signed to the practice squad and 2 could be elevated to the game roster for the opener. The benefit of doing that is the veteran’s salary doesn’t guarantee as it would if on the 53 man roster. I suspect if they pick up Jakob Johnston to play FB they might choose to go that route. A PS player can be elevated for 3 games before needing to be added to the 53.
