Wolf was also hamstrung by the Coaching staff not identifying the type of players they wanted because I don't think Mayo, AVP and the DC knew what they wanted.
Hamstrung so every pick was a bust? If Wolf didn't know the player that Mayo wanted, simply pick good players. I don't understand the hamstrung thingy. Why can't Wolf just pick good players without Mayo's input? Said another way, why does Wolf need Mayo 's input in order to draft good players?

Yep, I agree completely. I think Wolf goes and gets the guys the coach wants, I don’t think he’s like his father, who built teams for the coaches to run. I think the change to Vrabel helps him because of the clarity Vrabel has about the guys he wants to build with. .

Considering he didn't draft the players this year, that should explain it. He can't.

You would want to know the type of player the coaching staff are looking for because you're trying to bring in players to match a system.

A good player is very subjective: I am sure you would have got 7 different answers on who the good player was that we should have drafted.

Polk was actually pretty good at Washington with very reliable hands, which is something we lacked in 2023.
Wallace, as I remember was a 3-4th round projected guy and was ranked anywhere between 10-15th OT. Again subjective
Layden Robinson, I don't know what that was. He was projected 5-6th round and we took him in the 4th, I think fueled by need.

None of those players were on my draft list but after watching their college tape admitted that they were good/decent players

To be fair the 2023 draft appears to be decent-ish.

CB1- Gonzo- very good CB when healthy
Backup DL- White- Lots of potential, imo should strictly be an IDL
Backup LB- Mapu- has been a bust but might stick as a back up LB (TBD)
Starting Center for Houston- Jake Andrews- Penciled in as the starter
starting K for Arizona- Chad Ryland- very iffy here, but still a successful player at least last year
Probable starting WR- Booty- 6th round dart throw, bounced back last year
Starting Punter- Baringer- Arguably top 5 punter
Starting WR- Pop- Should flourish in this iteration of the offense

Thats not a bad draft

I've read a hundred posts by Eliot Wolf's mom (or whoever it is posting here that tells us that time and time again) saying that poor Eliot was hamstrung by the system he inherited (and presided over as Director of Scouting) and that explains why he shouldn't be blamed for 2024 but should be given credit for 2025.

2023, apart from being an excellent draft, blows that nonsense apart.

2023
Wolf says: Bill, I evaluated and grad ed every player that will fit into your system and schemes. I have them tiered for you. Now you only need to interview them when they come in for a visit.
Bill says: I already scouted everyone I need to know.

Wolf says: Bill, I evaluated and grad ed every player that will fit into your system and schemes. I have them tiered for you. Now you only need to interview them when they come in for a visit.
Bill says: I was fired, so don't bother me
Mayo says: I don't have a system

2025
Wolf says: Mike, I evaluated and grad ed every player that will fit into your system and schemes. I have them tiered for you. Now you only need to interview them when they come in for a visit.
Mike says: thanks! after I sign some free agents and interview your college players, lets agree on who best fits for us

Mike says: Yeah, I'll take a large, 2 and 2. Oh, and go do the NBC Sports Boston hit. Ryan, Alonzo, whatcha got?

"Eliot, my son, I'm going to let you in to the secret of keeping your job in a large organization.

There are two ways.

First, you can be really good at your job and hope that it speaks for itself.

But, if you're not any good, don't despair. In that case you have to manage upwards. What matters is not so much whether you're good at your job but whether those you report to think you are.

One way is to tell them that what looks like failure is really success -- if you don't like the messages coming in, well, shoot the messenger and get a new one. We'll call that the "emperor's new clothes" strategy. But the NFL isn't politics. You can't pretend that 4-13 is a successful season.

In that case what you need is a Fall Guy. If you did a terrible job selecting players in the draft and free agency, blame the coach. He didn't tell you what he wanted, so it was fine for you to take offensive linemen who couldn't move and say that they could move to left tackle, wide receivers who couldn't get open or catch, and so on. When it doesn't work, blame it on the bad coaching.

Of course, you've got to be a sneaky little weasel who spends his time sucking up to the bosses, but your Fall Guy won't be around to contradict you and you'll be surprised how easy it is to find gullible people to fall for your story."

FWIW, the 2022 draft class may have been the worst.

Milton is a jerk and Polk is a headcase.

Were those qualities on the coaches list?

Wolf says “ Bill I….”

Belichick says, “ Shut the **** up Elliot, I make the decisions here.”

Anyone who thinks Wolf was telling Belichick what to do is a moron.

Never once did I say he should not be blamed for the 2024 draft. He absolutely is the guy to blame regardless of the reason.
