I don’t see it this way. They obviously have to play well or they aren’t going to make the team, but Chism really isn’t competing so much against the other WR’s as he is for a specific role in the offense, one that MacDaniels cherishes. A number of these WR’s can play out of the slot, most notably Diggs and Douglas, but only Chism plays the very specific role that Welker and Edelman played. The one where they can get open literally instantly, and bail the quarterback out of trouble, and usually move the chains doing so. Douglas plays the slot much as Amendola did, and while he can get open relatively quickly it’s not the instaneous style we saw from Edelman and Welker. Diggs plays it more like Troy Brown did, and gets good separation on a variety of routes for longer gains. I believe Chism has shown the staff he can play that Edelman role, and has made the team on that basis.
