I think that’s a big part of it.

The survivors as successful sites are passion projects as much as they are commercial ventures. So they’re even more dependent on some heroic champion (that’s you, Ian! And all your moderators as well, of course) to keep them going. That means they’re vulnerable to disruption by the inevitable life changing events that eventually afflict us all. Succession strategies are never easy, and this is such a speciality niche. Plus I’m not sure if there is ever an easy exit strategy available for lifestyle entrepreneurs. Hmmm, I need to think on that one a bit…
That's the thing. I'd have a tough time ever letting this place go because of the forum, because it's such a huge part of my life. If it wasn't for the community, I don't know if I'd still have the same motivation. Although it's not worth anything (or not enough to matter). So if anything happens to me (in the event I'm eaten by a random pack of squirrels), I don't think my son would be interested. And my wife already said she's not going to keep it going. I told her she'd at least have to hop on here on my PC and post something so that everyone wouldn't be wondering what the deal was.

I obviously can't get into who is/was registered on here, but I'll confirm that was indeed the case (media guys keeping an eye on the forum). I talk to some of those guys occasionally, but I think most of them now lurk outside more so than post on here.

They're all sort of focused on building their brand on X, Instagram, etc. - and rightfully so - because of the fiasco that is the current state of the internet. They have to have some way to try and promote their content due to the drastic change in people's habits. It's not quite like it was, where people used to go to the various news outlets or sites and get information. Now people get it as they're scrolling through whatever platform they're on, along with a good percentage of people who get their news from videos on TikTok.

This approach is a little scary because I noticed there are now accounts popping up posting bogus news as real articles, which is a new and frustrating development. I've seen them more and more lately, and they're coming out in rapid-fire, which adds another very irritating wrinkle to an already messed-up landscape.
@Ian, do you still receive phone calls from Mike Reiss?

I don't trust any of the "fake news" I see on TikTok/Youtube/IG or other, especially if it uses that AI generated male voiceover that we all are familiar with. I will go direct to the source, like Phil Perry, Tom Curran or Evan Lazar. Perry certainly seems to be the most telegenic of the three, and I think it's just a matter of tik tocks, pun intended, before he's drawn into the national scene. Well spoken, well informed, well coiffed, not stiff on camera.
I just come here and trust everyone blindly. If anyone shares something fake they get torched and laughed at right away so we kinda have a natural policing/filtering system here.

Therefore you are hereby enjoined from cavorting with hungry squirrels!

We won’t lose our democracy anyway, we have a constitutional republic.

Ben Franklin called it that too.

“What type of government have you given us Mr Franklin”?

“A republic madam, if you can keep it.”

Sorry I'd like to think so, but our federal government ONLY works if the 3 branches of government work EQUALLY for the benefit of the country and there is an INDEPENDANT civil service to administer and run federal programs.

Today we have an Executive branch that has over run the other 2 branches, and we enact laws by "executive order" that USED to be done in conjunction with Congress. The best example all the tariff orders that change on a day-to-day basis it seems. Back in the Hoover administration the Smoot-Hawley tariff act that helped accelerated the Great Depression was an example of an act of Congress and signed into Law the President. I'm not sure exactly when the President got the power to universally enact these laws unilaterally whenever he or she wants.

BTW- (since I'm ranting again) Another way we run our country now that ALWAYS pisses me off are these "big beautiful" omnibus bills that seem to cover a MULITUDE of topics and no one ever really know what's in it. Which of course is why it's designed that way. To hide information from us. Also, this is NOT a problem of Trump, this kind of BS has predated him for a while yet is part of the problem. If you are going to join in multiple bills at least let them, be about the same or even SIMILAR topic. It's been on going but Trump pretty much made Congress irrelevant.

So yeah, Gr8, we used to have a "republic". Not so much anymore.

Ian, I need help. This has been twice in one day Hopefully I'll be too tired after talking about the game to go off for a 3rd time.

I mention these 3 because over the years (early years) they would often have articles of some kind the next day with the same subject and talking points that were posted here the day before....

Fred Kirsch
Andy Hart
Trollin Volin

And I do think Kirsch still comes here regularly and debates. As does Matt Chatham. Also someone with the Patriots or that covers the team has been posting here for years with exact NFL verbiage for league rules.

Most players by this point aren't even old enough to remember phpBB-like forums. They prolly read Reddit, just like they often stare at what's being said about them on social media. But not here.

I imagine there were and still are lurkers. We have all kinds on this forum. Diehards, homers, objective, casual as well as negative and absolute haters. You would think it would be a good place to get the pulse of the fan base just by reading the first page of threads? I bet they are surprised by some of the insight the fans put out here from time to time and probably do run with it occasionally.

Coaches reading this stuff jeopardize their sanity and sleep.

Used to be real simple: Read the local newspaper.

Keep an eye/ear out for scuttlebutt from radio, TV, the Stool & folks on the street.

Of course, the culture today affects not just the behavior and attitude of fans, but owners, their coaches and players as well.

I think the fact that Belichick and Brady were mostly oblivious to the noise benefitted them, although we're learning today that Bill was apparently distracted himself by media. He was able to post effective bulletin board material in the locker room, but it could have been more. People can be petty.

Just on sheer numbers, some probably do. There are several NBA players that are notable for having burner accounts and being stuck in "the comments". It's natural for public figures to want to see what is being said about them

Do they take it seriously and take action off of it, probably not.

They absolutely take it seriously. Derek Carr wanted to fight Max Kellerman after he suggested the Raiders replace Carr.

Deion Sanders dumped water Tim McCarver after Sanders was critisized for playing both baseball and football.

LeBron James got into a confrontation with Stephen A. Smith because criticized his son.

Players have gotten into Twitters wars with fans.

There are more, but players are way sensitive today due to everything being exposed online for people to see.
