OT: Josh Simmons steal of draft

He is the #4 pick in the draft. Highest LT pats have ever selected.
When he dominates over an entire regular season game against starters….that will be real evidence that he was worth the high pick

These preseason games against backups with vanilla defensive plans are glorified scrimmages

To be fair aren’t you the one who has deemed Campbell a future guard and Simmons an all-pro based on some practices?

Im also a Will Campbell skeptic myself but still gotta be consistent.

Really? The Campbell hate is unreal. I watched him ragdoll someone downfield on a run play. He’s got a mean streak that will serve him well.
It gets tiring. I don't get it either. At least State has shut up. But I guess he will crawl out from under his stone at the first opportunity.

The guard comment was kind of in jest. My main point was that if you select a LT in top 5 he better dominate and be top 10 in league or the pick was not used wisely.
I do not really expect him to be moved to guard
That was a bold hot take prediction.
As for Simmons, yes I think he will dominate for years and be a top 10 LT under Reid’s coaching

Simmons will be interesting but he was never really in play for us. His injuries made him a clear bottom of the first round guy. If we wanted him it would’ve been a dangerous game to try to pick him in a desired spot. Pats kinda had to play it safe and take either Campbell or Membou.

I think Membou/Campbell will be more of a thing to watch as we could’ve gone either way.

So now Campbells performance in a preseason game means nothing but Simmons performance in PRACTICE means he‘s a Hall of Famer? Got it.

Its not hate. Why does everyone onthis board think that pointing out factual limitations is “hate”

He is not Jonathan Ogden or Anthony Munoz ( or Josh Simmons LOL) OK?

That is not “hate”
Most rookie LTs will not be perfect in all phases. He is just not a generational talent
In all seriousness how are you able to tell what his factual limitations are in a couple weeks of training camp and a couple series in the first preseason game? Maybe you’ve been to every practice at camp.

I think that’s why people see it as hate, instead of letting the situation play out and let Campbell prove he is a good LT you have been saying how bad he is and how great Josh Simmons is after a couple weeks of camp and hasn’t played in a preseason game yet.

We are football fans. We like to communicate early impressions. Of course these early takes are guesses. Some will be right and some very wrong.
Early takes generate discussion and are just uninformed opinions.
I could be wrong but in general from following the NFL for almost 60 years, Elite high draft pick OL usually separate very very early in TC.

I do not hate Campbell. I think he will be good but thought he was picked way too high in the draft out of desperation.

So there you have it folks. Sam has admitted his take on Simmons is just an uninformed opinion, so maybe we can take it exactly that value and move on.

Fair enough. Although I’m not convinced you don’t hate Campbell. LOL!

I agree on the “ issue” of Campbell’s arm length, I don’t think it’s the issue that a few here want it to be, but I disagree on the draft being a crap shoot. I think the teams that have the best front offices and scouts become better teams than those who don’t. There are many examples of this, with the Eagles being the most obvious, but one of the other recent examples is the Lions, a perennial doormat , who have turned it around completely since bringing in Brad Holmes. And I think the job the Patriots front office did in this draft is going to be a huge factor in them going from the worst team in football back to a contender. We saw a glimpse of it last night, but that was just a first step, and they will need to repeat this offseason a few times to become great again, and bring more Lombardi’s to New England. My prediction is that the Patriots will be the first team to win 7 Lombardi’s, and their front office will be the key to making that happen.

I don’t know how good the front office is but Vrabel seems to have made a huge difference.

Picking specific players who will succeed seems particularly hard. A fair number of early picks bust or fail to live up to realistic expectations. Late picks are glorified UDFAs and seem to be even more of a crapshoot.

You can't coach arm length.
It's our first look at him in live action... He did not come off as a liability which has been the picture painted of him because of 3/8ths of an inch... So far so good

PS2 vs minny in a week... Every one will be waiting, watching...

Simmons would have been a major risk as a top 10 pick with that patella injury. Everyone had him in the 20's, and sure enough he ended up 32nd - every team passed on him until KC at 32. We'll see how things turn out - if he stays healthy and becomes an all-pro then all the doctors were wrong.

have not clue who dante scarneckia is... but this is what Dante Scarnecchia said about arm length...

Back in 2018, when the Patriots drafted short-armed Georgia tackle Isaiah Wynn (33 3/8 inches) in the first round, Scarnecchia made it very clear how he felt about the importance some placed on those arm measurements.

"That [expletive] is way overrated," he said."

he further said:
I don't think [short arms are] as problematic. It becomes problematic when they can't do the things you want them to do to overcome that particular limitation.

Campbell is getting his chance to show he can do the things the coaching staff wants him to do... will he be prefect right out of the gate? nah... but based on what has been said about his play and his willingness to accept advice and coaching, he will work on it until it is not a liability

Great example there with Wynn.

He was a BUST.

How could he be a bust? His arms were over 33 inches....

Ohhhhh... I get it... It's the player, not the measurables that really matter

Kind of a jest? You make a fool of yourself

Chase Young in his home state of Louisiana week six (Oct 12) of the season will tell. Young is resurgent this season. He was the second pick in 2020.

It's going to be a war.
