James especially is catching my eye. Austin has had his ups and downs, but definitely competitive and more than fine to be a 5th CB.
Austin looks better than last year and James might be better than him so very easy to assume our depth corners are better this year.

Hawkins was the 5th DB. So, we have 5 corners, 4 corners and a STer that we should be able to count on. That's a lot.
Gonzalez, Davis, Jones, James, Austin
Peppers, Dugger, Hawkins, Woodson

I think that there is room for one more.

Perhaps Bolden. And there are a couple of others already on the roster. I think we can trust Vrabel to give them a fair shake and look for upgrades if any are to be found.

I thought Austin & Jones had overall poor games, and that Kobe Minor in particular is simply Not an NFL player.

Nice to see at least someone named Polk make a catch tonight... But after that he didn't really play that well either.

As some us us have already mentioned, DJ James & Miles Battle deserve and need more snaps; because if the season started tomorrow they would be our #5 & #6 CBs respectively.

And regarding the ABCs - Avery, Bolden & Crossley - **** it who cares about them.

Even a stronger endorsement on their performances.

Surely you're not claiming that Austin & Jones, outside of one deep pass break-up each, had overall quality performances, are you?

They did. I was facing the right direction

Vrabels defense is very db heavy. I think we have to have 6 corners.
4 will play regularly week in and week out #5 will see action and becomes a regular if there is an injury.

Just thinking about this today.

Carlton Davis has never played more than 13 games in a season. Gonzalez and Jones both have injury history in the past two seasons as well.

This means there’s decent odds the depth behind them will get significant playing time at some point this year. Do we trust Alex Austin to that extent? Do we even know what we have in Bolden, Dial?

Just feels like an additional vet getting added to this group wouldn’t be the worst idea.
I've mentioned this over the last several months that we should have at least signed another veteran at CB.. rasual Douglas who was a starter and pro bowl level player as well as Samuel Jr.. are still out there. However DJ James and Alex Austin are very impressive and look like they will be strong contributors.. our top dogs Gonzo and Davis have injury history.. if Davis has another injury plagued season this year.. I think Vrabel probably moves on next off season.. Austin is a guy who's been here and has gotten better each season..

The depth isn't great and it's a big concern for me because this defense is built on a lot of position groups compensating for others. Extreme position group wide strengths and weaknesses.

Our interior DL is poor vs. run but great rushing. Tonga as a rotational piece doesn't fix that.

Our EDGE defenders are strong vs. the run, but weak pass rushers. Again, Chaisson as a specialist doesn't fix that.

Our LBs and Safeties are strong vs. the run but weak in coverage.

The ability to play strong coverage on the outside with the Gonzo/Davis duo is one of the few snap to snap, game to game strengths they're going to be able to rely on. It will open up a lot of schematic compensation for those weaknesses in the front that other teams have personnel to exploit weak to week. But one injury and that's gone and sets the defense up to struggle IMO.

Not adding more CB depth, considering the guys available and their unused cap space, is the most questionable part of their offseason for me.
Rasual Douglas, assante Jr.. are pro bole level guys who've been FA all off season... we should be in on one of those guys.. jaire Alexander as well was available.

They are available for a reason.

I think they probably keep another safety. Either Pettus or Epps depending on the type they want.

Do you think that this6th corner is on the current roster? I would 100% agree with acquiring a corner but I would prefer that he be better than Bolden or Epps. Perhaps battle is a reasonable choice.

DB heavy to me might mean carrying 5 safeties, one or two of which can play nickel or dime.

I expect we'll see CB as another area where they'll look to sign some other teams roster cuts, especially after Week 1.

In an alternate universe of course, the Patriots picked Travis Hunter with the #1 pick and are looking secure at both CB and WR.

Gotta wonder how Browns fans feel knowing that they could have had Sanders throwing to his favorite WR had they not traded their pick.

NFW that Bolden should still be considered ahead of Battle now.
