Should the Patriots Trade for Washington WR Terry McClaurin? (8/16 update: off PUP)[8/25: signs 3yr extension]

Exactly. McLaurin will be 30 in Sept. It's not old but not young either. A JaMarr Chase deal doesn't make sense.

A 2 year deal is reasonable for his production and age. We have no evidence of him slowing down.

Historically a 2nd rd pick having an NFL career as a starter is between 20-30%. Draft picks are like high risk stocks. They are not guarantees but have value.

The team is sitting on $60m in cap space. Money is not a problem.

Our top WR is coming off an ACL injury and will be 32 in Nov. If he goes down we become seriously limited offensively.

It's a no-brainer.

I think they can have 3 guys make 30 million+ per, McLaurin would be one, then Gonzalez and Maye, so McLaurins deal would run out in time for them to use that $$$ to sign another young star, be it a free agent or one of their own, most likely Efton Chism III, who should be around 450-500 receptions 3 years from now.

Yep and the Drake Maye extension will have all kinds of creative cap magic part of it. That'll happen in 2027 is my guess.

Gonzo's extension will most likely be effective 2026.

McLaurin would be a fairly short-term deal. 2025 and 2026.

Milton Williams is $29m vs the cap next year but after that he has no guarantees.

Yep, they have been doing a really good job structuring contracts, almost all of their bigger deals have pretty good outs after a year or two. If I’m not mistaken they could part ways with Duggars and Onwenu after this season with pretty minor dead money losses.

Yes they have. The Bills actually did a good job w/ the structure of the Josh Allen extension. That could be a model for Drake.

Yea depending on trade or pre/post June 1 designation the savings can vary but for both players but it's significant.

Allegedly…

The money to acquire these players (McLaurin/Parsons) are of lower significance. It’s the draft picks that give way to reluctancy; more so with Parsons, obviously.

The thing with Parsons is he is only 26 so at least one of the picks it takes to get him is offset by Parsons himself (what are the chances of getting a better player with the pick). He'll probably take multiple picks and I'm willing to entertain that thought at least until we find out exactly the haul.

McLauren is older so losing the picks sting a little more but then his draft haul will be significantly less. Again just talking hypothetically on a message board I'm interested here too but there are limits to both especially since the brinks truck backs up too.

Yeah, I want/we need some blue chip talent on this team. There are a couple of potential blues (Barmore, M. Williams, Maye & Diggs), but we only have one sure-fire blue chipper as it stands; we need others.

Saw a piece that suggested Bourne, Polk, and a 2d. I'd jump on that one in a heartbeat.

I think you can win with one blue chipper, as long as it's your QB. Cleveland has Garrett and they stink because they have no QB. Dallas has Parsons and they can't win in the playoffs and their QB is oft injured. Steelers have Watt and they haven't won a playoff game in many years. Buffalo doesn't really have a blue chip End but they're always knocking on the door with Josh. I'm not arguing that Parsons isn't great he most certainly is, but great D ends don't win playoff games without a good/great QB, but great QBs can most certainly win playoff games without a great End. I would most certainly be excited to have Parsons, but the contract and draft pick compensation would be prohibitive imo.

I mostly agree, but how many teams without at least 3-5 blue chip players have won the SB (not get to the Championship game; WIN the SB) within the last 10-15 years? Nobody’s expecting the team to be full of All-Pro’s; just need a handful of high end talent.

Oh I agree that you need talent, and overall the Pats need to improve. The biggest wildcard is Maye. If he turns into what we all hope, that's the biggest piece of the puzzle. Then the hopes are guys like Gonzo, Barmore, White, Williams, Henderson Campbell...etc are the nucleus to build with. I'm a PSU fan and would love Parsons being a Pat, but for $40m a year and multiple high picks.....man that's a lot.

And if you look at teams like KC and Philly, most (not all) of their really talented guys are home grown. If you don't draft well you are screwed. Most teams that don't draft well and pay huge money/draft picks to acquire the talent level they failed to draft very seldom succeed.

You can have the money sitting in the bank or invested in a player… if the compensation isn’t bad pull the trigger

It will be 2029 before Maye's number would be that high. 2028 for Gonzalez. McLaurin will be in the one-year deal territory by then.

I Schefter just reading my posts, I said Pats, Raiders, Titans, Chargers, Browns, Bills.
The Jets Jets, Steelers , Cardinals, Seahawks not happening.

I think Bills are in on both these players.

Chargers are def in on Parsons, as will the Rams.

Rams love trading multiple firsts,

remember you not only need to give Washington a hefty price, you need to give Terry something in the range of a 3 year $100MM contract. This isn't something to consider unless the price is something like Polk and a 4th.

We ***** and moan about never developing any WR's, well now we seem to have a decent young crop of guys like Williams, Boutte, Baker, Polk and Chisom. Why don't we take the ****ing time and DEVELOP one or two of them for a change.

Baker, Polk, decent?

IF we would trade for Scary Terry are we looking at say player involved here are some possible names who could move.

Dugger
Stevenson
Bourne
Polk
Boutte
Strange
White
Austin
Peppers
Henry or Hooper

any names on here we absolutely wouldn’t move in a trade scenario?

No.

I could even add some others...
