Whats Up with the Tight Ends?

Some background on the two signings:

Tyler Davis entered the league in 2020 with Jax. He then went to Green Bay for 2 years. He's been placed on IR by the end of Training camp in each of the last 2 years: He's 6'4 - 252 lbs. His Pro-day results from 2020 are at the bottom. Davis is out of Georgia Tech.

Cole Fotheringham entered the league in 2022 with the Raiders Practice Squad. 2023 he bounced back and forth from the Raiders 53 and PS. He was waived with an injury during the final week of the season.. He signed with the Texans in 2024 after being waived by the Raiders. Then the Texans waived him and he re-signed with the Raiders, only to be waived and then signed by Denver who then waived him at the beginning of June with an injury. He's 6'4 - 246 but as slow as OL.

Maybe McDaniels used him as a FB in his time with the Raiders.. Not sure..

Davis:

Fortheringham:
Interesting. Josh might see him as pot'l for a FB.

We tend to think of FBs as these stocky, musclebound types but when you look at a guy like James Develin, he was 6-3 and just plain ole big.

With the Patriots signing two tight ends (Tyler Davis and Cole Fotheringham), plus having two more in camp that 'passed physicals' (but not yet signed), I'm thinking that they are shifting away from the idea of a FB on the roster. I can't see them trading or releasing either Henry or Hooper. Their replacements are needed in the near future, but not this season. Both of them will turn 31 this season.

Perhaps the coaching staff is underwhelmed by Bell, Westover, Dippre and Scott.
I think that's right. Josh likes to have the option of running plays involving a fullback, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has to have a "dedicated fullback" on the roster. It means he needs somebody on the roster somewhere who can play that position when required. I guess, given the body type, that player is likely to be found in the TE room. (It could be an O-lineman, but players that beefy are unlikely to be capable of the full range of things a fullback must be able to do: get open to catch passes, for example, or block downfield.) The fact there are so many TE's in camp suggests to me that they know the room needs a boost, particularly given where HH is in his career, and that because they chose not really to address the need in the draft, they're kind of rummaging around in the bargain bin. I don't think that's unreasonable at this point. Going into preseason, the roster was such garbage that they never had any chance of addressing ALL the needs anyway.

CJ Dippre with his Gronk like size; I am surprised we are not hearing much.

Gee Scott Jr. is a great story. A fast and strong TE. If he can pick up Josh's system over time he is a great athletic fit for a receiving TE. Not sure if he will ever be a blocking TE.

I think it's quiet because we pretty much know Henry is our starter and Hooper is the backup. So many other things to monitor and worry about than who will be our developmental 3rd TE.

Great Scott is a WR covert but went the WR rich Ohio State and switched to TE.

I think Henry and Hooper are very close Talent-wise not a huge drop off going from either.

In the NFL there are alot of guys that are Gronk sized, doesn't mean they can play like he did.

Yes. At Ohio State Gee was a bit slow to be a WR but fast to be a TE. Hence the switch.

I think Henry is definitely better than Hooper. You can debate by how much but my point really was more that both are in little threat to get beat out by the other guys.

So it's really just matter of who ends up TE3 which is kind of boring compared to other battles on this team. I suppose wether they carry a 4th TE and/or find a FB is a little intriguing but not enough so for media to actually cover it with any detail. Really that's fringe stuff for us psychos to debate.

We wouldn't need to carry Four TE's knowing we have our Taxi Squad to stash at least Three of them. Same for a possible FB...that said I am going be watching Jaheim Bell a little closer.

Good point but it's also about game day actives and dressing 4 TE/FB isn't an uncommon thing.

You may be right, but I don't recall it that frequently

Gronk, Hernandez, Whoman, and Devlin immediately come to mind. I don't recall exactly who the third TE was every year after arrest but I think it was pretty common for us to go with 4. Bennett too but then Gronk got hurt that year.

I always considered Devlin a FB not a TE/

That's what I'm saying between both FB and TE carrying 4 is pretty common. Since our FB got hurt I'd think there is a chance we carry 4 TEs instead of 3 and 1 FB. Especially if one of those TEs picks up some FB duty.

Always a chance one of our RBs pick up some of that slack and then you might carry the extra player out of that pool.

I was prioritizing TE in the draft & FA way more than most.
I've been saying it since Jan - we can't rely on 2 - 31 year olds at TE. Both seem to get banged up every year.
I was hoping Bell or Dippre would be able to show something, but maybe not.
I'd be very interested in trading for an underused or still hidden 2nd or 3rd year TE with a lot of upside.

I think the idea is you have 2 and so long as one of them is healthy you should be ok. This of course now gets stressed by the fact our FB got hurt which probably means less i formation and more 2TE sets.

I would love a shot at that ^ Guy knowing the Raiders already have their Gronk.
