The Tight Ends on the roster leading up to camp

Hunter Henry
Austin Hooper
Jaheim Bell (2nd yr)
Jack Westover (2nd yr)
Gee Scott Jr. (Rookie)
CJ Dippre (Rookie)

yesterday the Pats added two more, Tyler Davis and Cole Fotheringham...
Ian also notes that they have brought in at least two other guys, Duane Martin & John Shenker...
Also appearing on the “passed physical” list were two additional tight ends in Louisville’s Duane Martin and Auburn’s John Samuel Shenker.

What is going on with the TE position where we need 8 (possibly 10) bodies in camp? Just not happy with their performance? They looking for a blocker? Has anyone seen anything that would warrant these moves?

Ian's article -

I’d guess none of the back ups have stood out. An article I saw yesterday said Westover had switched over to fullback, as well.

filling in for Lampe i would imagine... wonder if they will look to bring in a new full back as well...

We should trade for Jakob

With the Patriots signing two tight ends (Tyler Davis and Cole Fotheringham), plus having two more in camp that 'passed physicals' (but not yet signed), I'm thinking that they are shifting away from the idea of a FB on the roster. I can't see them trading or releasing either Henry or Hooper. Their replacements are needed in the near future, but not this season. Both of them will turn 31 this season.

Perhaps the coaching staff is underwhelmed by Bell, Westover, Dippre and Scott.

Probably looking to add a blocking TE to compensate for Lampe's loss.

There is always the posibility that, after 9 seasons each, either Henry or Hooper could be hitting a cliff.

Could just be lighting a fire under their asses I suppose... Bringing in new guys a week into camp is a not so subtle way of saying to the guys there "do better, if not .."

I wonder if any of the new guys are hybrid blocking types that they could use as a replacement for Lampe... Just a thought

I’ve been wondering the same. It seems a good question.

Blocking TE is my guess.

I am inclined to agree with this.
they must see something in the new players that could have them at FB

I continue to read daily that Bell is underwhelming. Scott is a pass catcher TE.

was really hoping CJ Dippre was going to pop a bit... coming out of alabama, he should really be as close to pro ready as you are going to get... though, there is always a learning curve... He's not really a blocker, but maybe as a potential replacement for HH when the time comes...

Apparently, the team isn't sold on any of the #3 TE's as a TE or as a possible TE/FB.

thats a pretty logical take... bringing in 4 guys, signing two a week into camp? at the very least they are sending a strong message that things as they are aren't good enough

A #3 TE on the 53 has to be a strong blocker. The alternative is the Practice Squad.

he was an udfa, so there really is no draft slot related excuse to keep him on the 53... does seem like he's headed in the PS direction

Some background on the two signings:

Tyler Davis entered the league in 2020 with Jax. He then went to Green Bay for 2 years. He's been placed on IR by the end of Training camp in each of the last 2 years: He's 6'4 - 252 lbs. His Pro-day results from 2020 are at the bottom. Davis is out of Georgia Tech.

Cole Fotheringham entered the league in 2022 with the Raiders Practice Squad. 2023 he bounced back and forth from the Raiders 53 and PS. He was waived with an injury during the final week of the season.. He signed with the Texans in 2024 after being waived by the Raiders. Then the Texans waived him and he re-signed with the Raiders, only to be waived and then signed by Denver who then waived him at the beginning of June with an injury. He's 6'4 - 246 but as slow as OL.

Maybe McDaniels used him as a FB in his time with the Raiders.. Not sure..

Davis:

Fortheringham:

Chad Graff had this note in his recent article:
Gee Scott Jr. has been impressive in the battle for the No. 3 tight end job and likely enters preseason games as the favorite for that role.

Personally, I've never seen his name mentioned but not many 3rd stringers are getting mentioned anyways
