What Decisions Are There On The Defensive Front?

Vrabel could still bring someone in after the final cuts or by trade. It's early, but for now, these 14 seem to be heavy favorites.

DT: Barmore, Williams, Tonga, Farmer, Pharms
EDGE: White, Landry, Chaisson, Swinson, Jennings
ILB: Spillane, Ellis, Tavai, Gibbens

I suppose Jennings is the least likely. Mapu is waiting for an injury.

I think this is going to play out as true, other than injuries shaking it up.
The big question seems to be stopping the run on first down, as Tonga looks like a short yardage specialist rather than a two down player. But we'll see.

The biggest decision to be made on the defensive front is whether Christian Wilkins is healthy and worth bringing in.

A DL of Barmore, Williams and Watkins, all at full health, would be a top 5 group.

Jennings was our best run defender last year and is one of the few best edge run defenders in the NFL. He will see a good amount of playing time.
Pharms is the least likely imo, mostly because he is the worst player on your list with room to spare. Roy seems more likely.

Our Offense might not be too far behind IF Kyle Williams gets' it. Diggs and Williams with Pop Douglas in the Slot should be Lethal. I didn't even mention Henry @ TE or our Pass catching RB's. I think our Offense can pull its weight if a few players arrive.
A problem last season was that the Pats offense couldn't stay on the field. So, they were constantly placing the defense back out there.

This season we should see much more help from the NE offense.

Agreed also Swinson will be in the mix along with Gibbens. Given how bad the LB depth was last season. It's night and day difference this season. I'd like Tavai to be part of the mix as well going forward he's a veteran who's been here and had played at a high level. Chaisson as it's reported has been excellent on the edge all camp. We just have so many guys now that OCs have to account for.
I’m not a Tavai fan. Players telling fans to know their place need to take their own advice. Fans pay so players can get paid. Dont bite the hand that feeds you.

You sound like a fan who needs to learn your place. Enjoy the games and treat the players with the same decency and respect you would any other human being.

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face just because he bit the hand that feeds him or something like that.

I do. If you think telling someone to mind their place is out of line (as I do btw) you should be talking to Tavai. I’m just giving him back what he said first.

In other words I’m treating him with the same decency and respect he showed me. Which is pretty much what you said I should do. If you have a problem with that it’s your problem not mine.

I loved the Chaisson signing when they made it. Milton Williams said this defense is all attack and that has me slightly concerned about run defense. If the front 4-5 are constantly attacking that might open several holes for opposing RBs. Does anyone else find it concerning or is it just me?

He should not have gone there.

2024 was a dumpster fire. If Tavai continues with those types of comments then he does not deserve respect.

Do you here yourself? If he continues with those type of comment he does not deserve respect. HE DOES NOT DESERVE RESPECT??? Because he told other people to talk to athletes and coaches with human decency?

Sports fandom is one of the cesspools of humanity in this country. I have no idea what part of the brain it triggers for so many people that athletes are somehow less human than the rest of us. Our money is what keeps grocery stores open yet we'd never express the sort of entitlement to go in there and disrespect or harass the guy at the register the way people think they can athletes. It's just pure insanity.

Sports fandom is just so out of control.

Almost completely opposite of Bill and yes it gives me concern.

I Think a key will be for Gonzo and Davis to be healthy so that Dugger and Peppers can focus on helping the run.

Yes and no.

I think BB's strategy of 2-gapping DL was so ingrained in us that we've been conditioned to think other ways are bad. Both schemes are capable of defending the run. So schematically, not concerned.

That being said, it comes down to players and Barmore/Williams have both been weaker vs. the run overall in their careers. So that's a concern. I think our EDGEs and LBs play the run well though, so it's not uncompensated for.

No roster decision should ever be based on anything like that.
Who really cares anyway.

Good grief.

Talk about going off the rails. Who is referring to the dramatic extreme that Tavai is less human than anyone else? Could you point out the post?

Its too damn bad that Pats fans criticize the team and its players for underperforming. That is is business they are in.

Are the Pats going back to the base 3 - 4 ?

Vrabel ran the 3- 4 every season in Tenn.

yeah, my take on Chaison is that he will be very 1 dimensional. when on the field, I assume teams will run at him, or pass into his vacated space. he will make plays, and give up plays. my assumption, 3rd and long will be his calling card.

I agree we have grown comfortable with a read and react, bend but don't break D. wait for the opposing team to make a mistake.
with Vrabel/Williams, we will see more a more aggressive, attacking look D, with players encouraged to make plays. the flip side to that is giving up a big play.

looking forward to reading that a player "sucks" because he gave up a big play, while trying to make a big play

Why do you expect this from Chaisson?
