I am not Lowe's defender or his excuse maker
but he is 3 years in the league (year 1 he never played)
year 1 he played 33 snaps
year 2 he played 470 snaps between LT and RT
year 3 he played 800 snaps mostly at LT
all 3 seasons, he had a different offensive scheme/co-ord.
he has had little to almost no coaching.
he plays thru injury
he is still only 26 years old. he has great length and reach. he has good size and athleticism. with better scheme/coaching, he could be a very serviceable OT
That’s very useful context. I had forgotten how raw and inexperienced he was when he first came to the Pats. Hope Marine can give him the coaching he’s not had before, and maybe make something of him. Only 26 and plays through injury are good traits.

I think I am in the minority but I feel lowe will emerge as above average tackle either on left or right and will have a long NFL career . He has the tangibles. Now just need to get the OL fundamentals and coaching rolling. He was not coached properly over last 2 years . With Doug marrone he could become an even better player. Don't give up on him when he has more than 20+ games as starter under his belt on a rookie contract .very few have the kind of experience he has . I am sure he might be able to compare the mistakes he made earlier when he gets the right coaching . No way is Lowe not making the 53.

If the OL does well this year I am going to say it was just natural ability and not give Marrone any credit. LMAO

I really hope he can get them all locked in, honestly with Morgan Moses as essentially a mentor type I think the will be locked in and perform very well.

Whenever the OL does get beaten on plays, I feel more confident this season that the reasons will be due more to a simple lack of talent than to being mal-coached and/or allowed to continue to make the same mistakes over and over again without consequence than I did last season. There's a compliment in there somewhere...

Wilson is a very athletic and smart player.

Wouldn’t shock mento see him starting C before season’s end. Not sure he’s a guard but UGA did have him there initially until he locked in C spot

Just watched Forged In Foxboro and noticed there was a comment somewhere in it to the effect that at this level everyone has the talent, what matters is how they apply themselves. That’s true of the players, and that’s true of the coaches.

Point of that is, I think it’s not as likely as you suggest that a lack of talent determines the result of line play.

And my iPad followed Forged In Foxboro with the NFL Turning Point analysis of how the Pats beat the Rams 13-3 in the Super Bowl. That’s relevant because one thing they pointed out was Aaron Donald being double teamed most plays.

Point of that is, if the Pats’ OL doesn’t have the talent to win their matchups the coaches can compensate, if the coaches aren’t lacking talent themselves.

You’re wrong about the most important factor, he’s a terrible athlete. His RAS score was as bad as it gets, and the only reason he played pro football last year was because he was on the worst offensive line in football. By all accounts he’s a nice guy with long arms, some here believe that’s all you need to play tackle in the NFL, I’m not one of them.

???

You say that Lowe's ONLY value is being the backup LT. That is huge need.

For 20 years, one of the most important aspects of our winning teams was to have JAG's like Lowe on the team. It is critical to have experienced backups who can step in when needed. Obviously, they need to be healthier and better coached.
Given some adequate coaching, that is enough for him to have a long career playing for the patriots.

Saying that injured backup player sucked as a starter is rather typical posting by lots of folks. Lowe should have been on IR for much more, if not all, of last season. The incompetence of management in not getting additional help at OT, even after the season started was malpractice.

Lowe is what he is, a much-needed backup OT, a 4th OT. Even St. Brady found it difficult to play with injuries in the last half of his last season here.

And just BTW, I don't why you think that Lowe can't be backup swing OT. He can play and has played RT. However, for us, he would just be the emergency backup RT on the 53. We have Moses and Wallace (another injured player whose play sucked last year) and we will likely carry a RT or two on the Practice Squad.

The big difference is that “JAGS like Lowe” could actually play football, Lowe can’t.

Lowe scored fine athletically. his composite speed was graded good. his composite agility graded okay. he did not score well in his bench score or composite explosiveness. that was 4 years ago, and since, he has been in an nfl program to improve his strength and explosiveness.

5.71 is not a good RAS score.

Too much on the Sow's plate; let him compete for the starting LG job and see what happens...

The other two: Bryant should Never have been drafted and Wallace was over-drafted by Two Full Rounds.

I'd rather have VD & DT than those two stiffs.
VD... Venereal disease

Technique is what makes a good NFL tackle, all NFL players are altheletes.. they have to have sound technique and hand placement to block on the edges. He's been at two organizations. Also the fact that he's starting out on PUP doesn't help his case. If he can't go then one of these other guys will take his reps behind Campbell. As it's said the NFL stands for.. not for long..

Will Hernandez still a free agent, and apparently healthy following that ACL tear back at the start of last season. Would make a better option at guard than Sow, imo.
If healthy, Hernandez with have several teams wanting him before the season starts.

It is a matter of health and cap omney.

It is hard to imagin that there aren't a dozen teams who will have a better LG backup than Hernandez.

He would be worth taking a flyer on.

Put it this way, they featured him *very* prominently in that second video. That gave me the suspicion that he might play a bigger role than we realize this year, and certainly into the future.

He probably would be an improvement, and perhaps even practical. The only major knock that I have on him is that he's already 29.

I suspect that he might be the Starting Center by Mid-Season (if not sooner), but not because of injury, but because he turns out to prove himself in Camp and Pre-Season as being that good just as a Rookie.

Also Marrone has two O-Line assistants whom I believe have been O-Line coaches previously. There should be a lot of teaching going on in the O-Line meetings.
Even if Marrone is as Good, if not better an OL Coach that he's said to be, that will go a long way to significantly improving the OL in-general.
