Today R. Rice pled guilty to 2 third degree felonies and was sentenced to 30 days in prison and 5 years' probation. This has been a stone in my shoe for months now.

I have mentioned it in several posts over the last few months but since no one else was mentioning it, even though there were several other player's bad behavior vigorously discussed here. For some reason it never seemed to generate much interest or discussion. I was peeved that it seemed to take so long for justice to run its course and with the league who seemed in no hurry to mete outs ITS punishment. The unequal history of the NFL discipline has long been a source of slow burning anger in this fan in particular and a lot of Pats fans in general.

I'm a bit surprised that this was the end result. I was fearing something a LOT less severe, a mere slap on the wrist. BUT he was convicted of a felony and what they did WAS felonious in nature. I'm happy he'd getting some actual jail time. I was hoping for more, but not a lot more (3 month might have been more appropriate, but that's just quibbling and it's probably just my unconscious self wanting to **** with KC's season. )

Now we just have to see what the league is going to do to this convicted felon and how long it takes them to come up with its punishment. They have had almost 2 years to think about it.

There is part of me that wants to say, "give him the year off" This wasn't some misdemeanor. People were hurt and he ran away. In reality it probably will wind up with 8 games and I think I'd be OK with that outcome. I will be appropriately OUTRAGED if it's 4.

In another note, Rice settled a civil case for over a $1MM today as well and has 2 more pending. So all in all, I'm pretty satisfied in this outcome. Some token jail time, the felony label, and some money for the victims, hopefully Rice will put this behind him and learn from the experience and make something of his life. I WILL be rooting for that.

I’m gonna guess 8 games, which gets appealed and reduced to 6.

When it's 2 games.. a lot of people are going to be upset. Meanwhile, the Chiefs announced they will be putting him into their hall of fame as he exhibits the the true meaning of what it means to be a Kansas City Chief.

When will he do his 30 days??
Reports indicate that "The judge will allow Rice, 25, to find a time or times to serve the jail sentence, a spokesperson for the district attorney's office said."
WTF, he will now choose doing time when it is convenient for him??
There appears to be a conscious effort to minimize what he has done...

i wonder if the probation is supervised or unsupervised...

can do the 30 days at any time within the 5 years probation... one day every two months sound about right?

bah, call me a cynic, but i bet that thirty days gets reduced or eliminated during the probation period... he will just wait until this all dies down a bit, then will ask the court for a reduction because of nebulous "good behavior" during his probation...
