You get paid what the market allows you to get paid. And it’s simply not true that “ no one” knew who Williams was before the playoffs, plenty of people who pay attention to football knew who he was. Was he a household name, probably not, but that doesn’t mean he was a no name either. He’s a very good player, that’s why it took a bidding war to get him, and he’s got plenty of help on the Patriots DL to allow him to have a good season.
Panthers backed out because of his price. And he's not a better player than Barmore.

We'll see what happens in 2025.

I've already explained my concerns in a prior post. Nobody had heard of him until the playoffs rolled around. He was a rotational player his entire career because he had Cox and Hargrave in front of him. So what did the Eagles do when Cox was getting older and Hargrave approaching FA? They go back to back 1st round picks on DT. If they thought Williams could be that next guy, they would've spared at least one of those picks. Williams was still 3rd in snap counts behind the 1st round picks until 2024.

I've also mentioned in a prior thread how Williams had absolutely no business being paid more than Barmore who has proven to be a better/more productive player while missing a full season and other games. And the only reason Barmore hasn't complained is because he knows the uncertainty of his health. Had he played and played well last season, the Pats wouldn't have overpaid for Williams. He's also being paid a contract more than Tom Brady ever got in NE. So yeah, he's going to be under the microscope soon.

In the end, the games will decide who is right.

From the article:

"I fully understand that the salary cap has increased considerably over the years, but this was probably a significant overpay for a guy who has never even made a Pro Bowl, and the Panthers were lucky to avoid it."

"Williams is a good player, but he is not exactly a star. Perhaps he is being overrated by his strong Super Bowl performance. Or maybe his contract was merely a product of what was a rather weak NFL free-agent class overall."

"Whatever the case may be, Carolina should consider itself very lucky that it did not pay $26 million annually for a player who registered a 43.1 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus in 2024."

Do you have any idea how many players in the NFL are making more than Brady did? That’s a bizarre comparison.

No, the statement was that this was the highest contract the Patriots have paid a player ever.

Here’s the quote:

You specifically named Brady.

Milton Williams received the highest contract the Patriots have every paid a player. I'm not sure what's so confusing about that.

No kidding. You said that he was even paid more than Brady, then denied saying that, I’m not sure why, but you did. Players make more each and every year, we all know that. Is that fair, probably not, but it’s a fact of life in sports. Hopefully Williams has a great season and earns every penny of it.

I have no idea what you're talking about and haven't denied anything. I'll say it for the 3rd time, the Patriots have never given a player a contract more than what they just gave Williams. This is why I named Brady as Williams (a DT) surpassed the best QB of all time only 5 years later. Because of this, Williams will be under a lot of pressure.

So your comment about his track record isn’t that it shows flaws in his game.

Really it’s just that you don’t find it compelling for signing him to the contract he got.

And the Eagles drafting Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter is not part of Milton Williams’ track record.

You can argue that it’s because his track record didn’t make the Eagles think he was the long term solution; I can argue it’s because his track record showed the Eagles he’d be too expensive to re-sign so they drafted cheaper rookies to replace him. My argument is buttressed by the Eagles exercising their fifth year option on Jordan Davis.

I agree with you about Barmore being undervalued, but that’s nothing against Williams. It’s a shame Barmore’s health concerns have undermined his value. I hope he stays healthy and shines this season and makes a good case for being paid in his next contract.

The article you posted states that Panthers thought they had Williams until he spurned them when he signed with the Patriots but then you say the Panthers backed out of his price. It sounds like the Panthers were all in on him until Williams signed with the Pats.

I may have misread/misinterpreted it.

I want Williams to prove me wrong because I'm the rare poster actually pumping up this team for 2025. If Williams and Barmore have big years, the defense is going to surprise a lot of people.

I agree though it’s not a full guarantee that he is going to be the #1 guy we all want him to be, there’s always that concern when a backup becomes the starter, I’m thinking if Barmore stays healthy and there is quality depth Williams will excel. I hope

The Panthers went on Twitter saying they had signed him, only to find out the deal wasn’t signed and the Patriots had gotten him. I watched it play out live on day 1of free agency. And I never said he was better than Barmore, so I don’t know why you arguing as if I had.

************, you apparently can’t read your own posts.

Lmao, this entire board is excited about 2025, and now you want to try and claim that you are the “ rare” poster “ pumping them up.” The only claim you have to “ pumping them up” is saying they will be a failure if they don’t make the playoffs. Pretty much everyone, Sam obviously excluded, believes they have a decent shot at making the playoffs, so spare us the “ I’m the only one” horsehit.

Then tell me what you think I’m saying.

I already quoted what you said. Everyone knows he’s the highest paid player in Patriots history. You claimed no one knew who he was until the playoffs, not true. You then said the Panthers dropped out of the bidding, also not true, the Panthers went on social media claiming they had signed him only to find out that in fact the Patriots had signed him. And the fact of the matter was that the Patriots needed to sign a high profile player because they had a massive stink on them where the perception was that no one wanted to play here because they were losers. They also needed a high quality Defensive lineman because at that point, and still a serious concern, there was serious doubt as to whether Barmore would be able to continue playing, and he could be done at any time. So they signed Williams, who was the highest rated defensive lineman in free agency, convinced numerous other quality free agents that this was a desirable place to play, and went on to have a great offseason. Which even you seem to believe, as you are now claiming to be one of “the few” Patriots fans believing in them, when in fact the entire fan base believes they will be in the hunt for a wild card this season, they just don’t believe the season will be a “ failure” if they don’t make the playoffs. But it’s a win/ win for you, as you say you think they will make the playoffs, because “ the NFL sucks,” and they will be failures if they don’t, so either way you get to be right.

You then said the Panthers dropped out of the bidding, also not true, the Panthers went on social media claiming they had signed him only to find out that in fact the Patriots had signed him.
Lol.

Milton Williams on why he picked the Patriots:

"My agent was on the phone, and I was kind of in the room," Williams recalled, via NFL.com. "They were on the phone talking to teams, and teams were coming in with new deals. There was a lot going on, and it happened really fast. They talked about Carolina then and I was like, 'Alright, it sounds like the best offer we are going to get, so, we were going to go there.' Then, a split second later, New England hopped on and was like, 'Nah, this is what we got for you.' Carolina felt like they went too high on their number, so, they stayed at where they were at. New England came in, and it was [over] after that. They wanted me the most and made me a priority. So, I made them a priority."

Panthers Exec:

"We never felt like we had an agreement with Milton." He added that Williams' agent never gave them any indication that a deal was imminent, so the report that he was close ended up being totally wrong.

"Williams also opened up on the controversy, saying the Patriots came in with a better offer that the Panthers didn't match, which is why he ended up in New England after it was all said and done. It might have disappointed Panthers fans to have come so close to a game-changing talent on the interior only to miss out, but they can take solace in the fact that they apparently weren't close at all."

According to Schefter, he says the Patriots were prepared to outbid anyone for Williams.

The Panthers announced the signing, and he wasn’t “ traded” to New England.

We've spoken about White before. This year he doesn't have excuses. He's got an experienced HC and players along the front 7 that will allow him to get favorable matchups. I'm setting the bar very low, but he should get at least 8 sacks this year.
No need to wait,

White does NOT have a future as an EDGE/OLB at 285 pounds.
===========
He was brought in to replace Guy and then move up to replaced Wise.

Vrabel won't consider him an OLB as so many here do.
