OT: Brock Purdy gets paid

Purdy is a fraud.

He has one of the best RBs in the NFL. A stud TE. 2 good WRs. Great defense and cutting edge OC/HC. Purdy is just good enough to not let go. Like a Romo or Andy Dalton.
While I don’t think he is anything special, to say the defense is great, especially last year is incorrect. Last year the defense was 29th in points allowed.

the 49'ers just paid the Homeless Man's Joe Montana about twice what they should have

IIRC the Homeless Man's Joe Montana was Johnny Manziel or at least that's what he told Jimmy Haslam

IMHO, there are 5 or maybe 10 worth megabucks .... Rest are interchangeable. Purdy is not top 10.

It's a cool story, and he's an easy guy to root for.

I get the point : he’ll cost more going forward. But, can you win with Purdy ? Not the regular season, I mean when it counts…

I guess I just don’t think it’s smart to overpay just because you’d need to pay even more later.
I can agree with your assessment of Purdy but what's the alternative?

He's a good QB, elevated by the talent around him, when the talent is not phenomenal, like 2024, he shows what he is. He's in the 10-15 range of QB's, you can win with him, but his contract now limits the talent around him and he cannot elevate a team. 49ers did not have much choice, Not easy finding a legitimate top 15 NFL QB.

Lions similar with Goff, average QB with great OC and incredible talent but what are your other options?

Jalen Hurts won a Super Bowl, he's good, not great, but has phenomenal talent to play with across the board. Hurts got $255 over 5 in 2023, Purdy $265 over 5 in 2025, with QB inflation pretty much the same contract. That's the price for a good starting QB. They had to do it but now they need to draft some studs.
It's not like trading Purdy was going to get you Cam Ward.

It's not necessarily bad, very few QB's can carry a team but when you pay a QB like the guys that can carry a team (Jackson, Herbert, Allen etc.) you start at a disadvantage to those teams, the ones you are competing against for Super Bowls. Eagles overcame it with phenomenal drafts and trades. Hard formula to repeat.

SF has been in a difficult position regarding Brock Purdy for a while now.

While that seems like too much money, what's their alternative?

Let him walk, and draft Trey Lance v2.0?

Become the NFCW version of the Browns?

Rolling the dice with Purdy makes the most sense, in my opinion.
The Browns just drafted two QBs, and one in the 3rd round, and already signed Flacco.

Maybe the 49ers could pry Shadeur Sanders away?

Yeah!

That’s the ticket!

No the problem is that there absolutely will be a team that's desperate enough for a QB to give Purdy what he wants. There's teams like the Saints, Raiders, Jets that all are sort of in no man's land and getting a QB like Purdy solves the most glaring hole they have and then they can sell that they have a guy to build around now.

Watson had a million problems, was not much better than Purdy at the time (if he even was better) and still had a bidding war.

Someone would give Purdy the bag and Purdy is a young dude who hasn't really cashed out in the NFL. He has no incentive to play nice and be team friendly when he can make generational wealth and no matter what happens going forward he is set.
The Pats had the GOAT for how many years?

And how much did they pay him?

For TWO dynasties?

Good times!

49ers also drafted Kurtis Rourke in the 7th and he looks like a solid QB prospect. He could be the answer down the road.

The 49ers are fine with Purdy at QB for now. I love the notion that he is only good because of the talent around him… that literally describes every good QB in history.

Good QB’s on terrible teams is why we don’t put Archie Manning Sr in the same category as his sons. They disappear in the annals of history. They got destroyed behind terrible lines and never reach their potential.

Purdy is accurate, he doesn’t turn the ball over often. He’s Mac Jones with 2-3 fewer turnovers per game. He’s younger Kirk Cousins… that’s the going rate.

We are lucky that Tom Brady won 3 Super Bowls VERY early in his career and was playing more for legacy and was in a position where taking team friendly deals to see how high he could raise his SB total count was more beneficial to his longterm earning potential than taking the biggest deal.
The NFL cap situation was different then and wasn't skyrocketing like it is now. While the NFL was still the most popular sport in the US, Brady played in an era where fantasy football was just starting to catch on. By the time he won his six Super Bowls was when the cap started getting out of control with all the TV money and the explosion of fantasy football/betting.

Andrew Brandt (who managed the Packers salary cap) always brings up Tom Brady's case in NE. He doesn't think Tom Brady knew how the cap actually worked and may have been fed some bad information to take "team friendly" deals. He's said Tom left a lot of money on the table that only benefits ownership.
It was a unique situation. If Vinatieri misses two kicks and we are in 2009/10 etc with Brady only having 1 ring a decade into his career and no real prospects of passing Montana and becoming the GOAT, he's playing for max value contracts to set his life up the same way Manning did.
It is crazy how had Adam shanked the snow kick, missed the Rams kick or the Panthers kick, the Pats may not have won anything until 2014.

Regarding Manning: The problem with the Colts teams had little to do with Manning's contract. It was Bill Polian's atrocious drafts after 2003 that was the major problem. They could never build around Freeney and Mathis on defense. Bob Sanders was the only other significant player and the Colts only got 3 years out of him. They also had a hard time replacing Edgerin James. I'm quite shocked they even pulled one Super Bowl out of their asses in 2006.

Well, 2 and a half seasons and he's taken them to one super bowl that he lost to Mahomes in OT.

There is legit question marks on Purdy, I think the better deal would be something like 3 years, obviously the player wants the long term deal and financial security but even this kid might agree that is better than nothing specially for a Mr irrelevant who lucked out in a stacked roster.

Is there a market for Purdy out of SF? I don't think so.
Of course there is. Far worse QBs than him get signed every year. Jameis freaking Winston is still in the league and is on his fourth team.

But not at an AAV of $53M like Brock Purdy. The 49ers will have to draft exceptionally to win with Purdy at $53M.

And the real sad part about that is, Jerruh has no SB's to show for it!

Sadder is Jerruh thinks signing Dak for $60M is gonna help him get a SB.

Dak is cooked.

Jerruh is just like the 9ers in that he got himself into a place where he had no other option.

He just doesn't have the patience to bite the bullet and reboot the entire mess.

Actually, the talk in SF is that York is getting annoyed with shelling out so much money and nothing to show for it.
Funny, given he's the only one who can actually do something about it. If he's annoyed, just blow it all up!

I guess they all feel that keeping the band together for one more gig is better than blowing it all up and starting from scratch.

9ers feel like the biggest "stars and scrubs" team out there.

IMO the cowturds at least have a bit more star power in more places and a bit better scrubs.

I could be convinced otherwise, though.

No, because he's on his fourth team and his 11th season. He did pretty well with his first two teams. I think he's rookie deal was around 25 mil, then they exercised the fifth year option for 21 mil. The Saints then got him cheap but then gave him an extension. He made 46 mil off the Bucks and 26 mil off the Saints. All the while, the cap is going up. All a long winded way of saying if they hadn't reupped him he would have had no shortage of suitors lining up to dump money on him.

This is the rub with the QB position. The market dictates that the Purdue and the Daks of the league constantly carry 20+% of the cap, but having a median level guy isn’t enough to be a perennial contender. Having a good-not-great QB is almost worse than having a void at the position.

Actually, the talk in SF is that York is getting annoyed with shelling out so much money and nothing to show for it. The 49ers are the biggest underachievers in a very long time. Aiyuk was the latest disaster. They paid Kittle earlier. The pressure is now on Shanahan and Lynch.

The 49ers roster is declining and Purdy had a pretty bad year in tight moments when the offense needed a play to be made. He choked away 5-6 games when he didn't have his full entourage of All Pro players. That should've been a red flag for the organization. I would've waited and see how Purdy does this season before paying him. I'd rather pay more for a sure thing than saving a few bucks on a question mark.
This I agree with. He should be upset. Frankly, they haven't exactly drafted well the last few years. But that wouldn't matter if the HC knew how to close a SB.

As for Purdy, it's definitely an overpay imo. But it's the QB market these days. Purdy is a good QB. They aren't easy to find. Teams are in a no win situation.

What, they didn’t want to trade for Milton? You’d think they would since zooka Joe lit up the bills the way he did, winning Mayo’s SB…. /S
