overspend on some guys,
miss out on another over a million dollars here, a million dollars there

this year we overpaid for guys to jump start a roster rebuild.
did we "burn some cash" last year? hardly - the F/O was pinching pennies

we have missed out on a lot of players over the years because the front office would not go the extra step to either sign or retain guys here. Blame Bill, Blame Bob, idc who takes the hit on that.

it remains to be see if new spending patterns will emerge under vrabel.

Williams as an interior player was smart he got paid becuase of the market and of course he's a disruptive force in the middle. But to your point guys are getting some crazy contracts.

What is going on in the NFL today makes me appreciate when the dynasty occurred when it did starting in the early 2000's. If the 1st dynasty time traveled into the 2020's, it would've been very difficult to sign guys like Seymour and Wilfork and there's no way Tom would've been settling for a home town discount.

The most recent example was Calvin Ridley. The Pats were balking over $1M when that wouldn't have been a problem had they just let Bourne walk earlier. That money spent on Bourne could've been applied to Ridley.

While Milton Williams was a really bizarre contract, he got this because Alim McNeil and Derek Brown got $24M annually which caused the ripple effect. In addition, Christian Willkins had no business getting $27M annually earlier. These types of contracts are market wreckers. In fact, had Barmore played this season and had a good year, there's no way Williams is offered more than Barmore or there would be a problem in the locker room.

The good news is that these contracts of Barmore, Williams and Carlton Davis are short team rentals and won't cripple their cap.

Big time! The timing was perfect the early part of the 2000s.. go figure Wilfork had a 6 year rookie deal.. I think Ben Watson too right? It's just so amazing that we had those generation of players.. at the time frame we had Seymour 8 years.. Vince 10 years.. I miss the good days..

Meh…Bengals are notorious cheapasses. I’m dead shocked they paid the QB AND two receivers.

Zero chance they were ever paying Hendrickson. What no one knows if they lead him to believe they would….

I’d trade a 4th for him today IF he’d sign a two year deal.

What I don’t get is him expecting to get paid when everyone else already has. He cant really expect them to pay him a market resetting amount of $ after signing 2 others to large contracts can he? I get how he took their word he would get his but….they probably said “Trey….you will get a big contract this year….”

If we were contenders and just needed a pass rusher then I’d say the sky is the limit, give away a first for him.

But we’re not there and unless you think Hendrickson will still be a beast into his mid 30s it’s not a great fit

I’m not convinced that adding Trey wouldn’t legit make the Pats an AFCE contender.

I get the “best for a win now team” concept but there IS a path to the Pats being a win now team.

Issue is, until/unless you KNOW Drake is a franchise guy…you’re gambling.

But Trey plus them cobbling together a top 10-ish offense (Josh did it with Mac) makes them a playoff team.

I think this is a terrible idea. The Dolphins and Jets tried this approach in recent years and it blew up in their faces. You make a move like this when you are the Lions, right on the cusp but coming up a little short. Miami decided to go all in when they weren’t ready, traded for Hill, Chubb, and Ramsey, never went anywhere, and have been losing their best players to free agency because they can’t afford them. And the Jets went all in with Rodgers and also failed. Now both suck. The Patriots should play their season, see who they want to keep and jettison, and then try to put together another offseason like this one. The goal should be to be in the hunt for the next 10 years, not to try and blow it all in one shot.

If Judon was worth a 3rd to someone last year I think that's a fair starting place for Hendrickson. I'd do it and I'd guess someone else would too if not us. Ideally we get more out of him than Atlanta got out of Judon both in terms of sacks per year and more than 1 season. I didn't like trading Judon last year and I think Hendrickson has more in the tank so that's why I'd do it.

Problem is he probably wants a new deal too. Not that I wouldn't do that too but for how much because trading and paying up makes it double costly.

I loved judon he was a fan favorite and very productive. He shot his way out floor town.. and still never got a contract big steal getting Kyle Williams for judon essentially.

Saw an interview with judon after he was dealt and he wa very somber citing how much he misses new England and named people. At this point it may be over for my guy judon. To your points.. I think a 3rd is sufficient for Hendrickson.

Oh I hear ya.. but that was self inflicted, judon saw everyone else getting paid.. he wanted in on the action.. I'll always root for players to get as much money as they can... it was more of the team parting ways then so much judon wanted out..

Hendrixson is a top 10 defender in this league and will likely be a HUGE asset to any team he's on for the next 2 years.

That being said he is NOT for the Pats for a number of reasons. His age being the main one. Rushing the passer is a very physical effort. It's NOT about instinct, and less about smarts, its about pure physical effort, and Judon is a good example about how fast things can go downhill for a pass rusher as they get into the 30's.

BTW- I think the biggest issue with him with the Bengals was NOT the dollars per year, but the GUARANTEES he wanted for future years. I'm sure the Bengal's would have guaranteed him his first year, and maybe the 2nd, but balked on any guaranteed money down the road.

As to him coming here, He's not. He's a perfect get for a contender and we are NOT one of those .... yet. Time to move on to our next fantasy acquisition.

He initially wanted out because he wanted to get paid. He changed his tune for some reason when he was in Atlanta. Now he's not going to get paid **** after his disastrous year.
