Patriots Player Departure Joe Cardona released

With moves like Cardona being gone and not retaining Slater on the staff, this current coaching group is making it clear that this is a new regime and there is no room for sentimentality for old favorites.

I recall a play last season where he hiked to the punter, hustled downfield, and crushed the returner just after he caught it.

I believe he holds the combine bench-press record for a long-snapper - 30 reps at 225 lb.

As much as I love what they’re doing overall, it makes me a bit nervous how blatantly Vrabel is discarding “BB guys” for no reason other than they were part of that era. Does he think Joe Cardona is going to somehow undermine his message and program here? Seems extremely far fetched.
The last two such players (Andrews and Bentley) were both ultimately released with failed physical designations, so I'm going to guess that Ashby's drafting and Cardona's release might be a shock to us, but not to Cardona.

I believe he's the last one with a ring.

End of an era.

We are on to Maye Vrabel Era.

Maybrel??
Yep, kind of sad but needed. Releasing him now was the right thing to do. If he wants to retire he can. If he wants to keep playing let him have all the time he can to find a team.

Solid Human Being. Consistent Player
At 33 years old. It was his time
Ashby practices with Borregales.
That’s important. They need to be in sync with each other
Hopefully they both stick

Needed? Please Explain, I wanna hear this one

Hell of a snap velocity. Clocked over 40mph IIRC. Balanced service life and the NFL early in his career. Incredibly consistent. Never had to hear his name. A luxury to not have to worry about your long snapper.

Needed was probably the wrong word. I am more alluding to the fact they wouldn't draft a guy unless they were intent on Cardona leaving. Part of it is contract based. Part of it probably the fact they are looking for a clean start and he was the last member of the 'super bowl patriots'. So having him around is a link to the past that isn't coming back. And they need to focus on the future they can have in front of them. Also he was probably close to his final year anyway and the way this team is being revamped it is best to pull the band aid off all at once.

It was also 'needed' cause if the plan was to let him go in the end anyway, they owe it to him to do it now. He put in his work here. He is respected around here. He was part of bringing a super bowl title here. You don't do a guy like that dirty by waiting till a week before the kick off of the season to cut him if that was your plan all along. You just don't.

Cardona's arms measured 32 inches.
According to reports, Vrabel ran the workout and wore a blocking pad over his chest. The matchup with Vrabel didn’t end well for Cardona. Cardona “punched him” in the blocking pad with such little force that the three-time Super Bowl champion cut him on the spot.

There’s seemingly more to it perhaps, but bit of a scratcher.

- Wanting to change from the “old” guard?. Joe is the last guy arguably on any roster to be concerned about from a leadership standpoint and not being a good soldier. The farthest thing from a **** disturber.
- Age? He’s only 33 and it is common good long snappers to stick around to late 30s. Quick look, counted 10 guys from the 32 teams last year with a LS with as many or more years in the league as Cardona. There are atleast 3 guys on rosters who will be 39+ this year.
- Money? It’s peanuts difference and they won’t be hard pressed with the cap

Well either way appreciate all Joe brought to the team and glad he FINALLY got the often phony Salute to Service award he deserved years and years ago.

Joe and I at last’s years premiere

That's actually the biggest WTF draft pick gripe I have. Cardona is 33, consistent, healthy, and on the cheap. There was no need to draft a long snapper.

This move was more about eradicating older players.

No old players allowed.

Wow!!!

Looks like I am buying a Dugger jersey now and changing my profile pic…..

Now, there isn’t a single Patriot left from the 2018 SB team…… and I don’t even think there is a single Patriot on the roster who played with Brady….

This situation reminds of when I was in grad school. I had a fellowship that paid quite well for 4 years but in my final year, they switched me to a TA ship that paid less.

The union stepped in and insisted that I not get a paycut. The administration told me, sorry but we don't have a line for you since this would be a violation of the union contract. I was out of a job. Almost. Until some reasonable minds fixed things.

Cardona is still relatively young; there should be no deterioration. I imagine it's just his salary as a vet.

Appreciate his efforts and accomplishments here. Good luck to him and his family.

Probably Vrabel going through the books and saying”we’re paying what for a long snapper!!??
He was making 1.2m. That is peanuts for an NFL player. The minimum salary for an active NFL player is 795k.

I feel this is more of cleaning house and making room for the new pick.

Although the new longsnapper hasn't even seen camp yet, so he might not even be as good. *shrugs*

Thank you to Joe Cardona for your contributions to our team and best of luck at your next stop.

Might not want to spend new cash for a Dugger jersey just yet. He's probably next if Vrabel is looking to cut some prior regime veterans.
