Bill has a 300 page book coming out where he makes no mention of Robert Kraft. There's obviously some bad blood between them. It has a chapter admitting his his mistakes, but Malcolm Butler is not mentioned as one of them. The shocking mistake was that he says he should've drafted Lamar Jackson. I don't think it was a mistake as they wouldn't have made the Super Bowl unless they drafted Chubb in the 2nd round. The other mistake he mentioned was the obvious of letting Tom Brady walk.

Counterpoint: would drafting Jackson have led Brady to demand a trade? He didn't want to convert to RB, and he wasn't going to win the job from Brady.

In any case, I'd have to see his exact logic to see how much I agree with him.

Yeah that’s what’s a bit confusing to me. He says he regretted passing on Jackson and regretted letting Brady walk. But would he still have felt that way about letting Brady go if he *hadn’t* passed on Jackson? Because I don’t think the team spending a 1st on his replacement would’ve sat well with Brady, especially after having just won his 6th title with us. Doubt the two would’ve been teammates for more than a season. At least from Brady’s side of things, it sounded like he was gone after 2019 regardless.

The issue was that we were okay letting Brady walk without a plan at such an important position. Having a Lamar Jackson in the wings effectively makes that easier to swallow because you are basically saying "they got a first round QB with a ton of potential that is worth trying out over squeezing a couple more years of Brady".

The head scratcher was that they didn't have a transition and didn't make a stronger play to keep Brady. It's why so many Pats fans convinced themselves that they must think they struck gold with Stidham and he was showing serious starter potential, because nobody could fathom we let Brady walk so easily and then didn't have a gameplan. Then the 11th hour Cam Newton signing really showed they got caught with their pants down.

They either needed to find a way to keep Brady or have a natural successor if they were okay letting an older QB walk. Lamar Jackson in many ways was just the most likely successor. We had a QB who was turning 41 that off season, we just got rid of a longterm back up who was meant to be the next QB but Brady aged him out and Jackson fell right to them.

Unless Belichick was willing to run a system like the Eagles did with Hurts....where they basically treated Hurts like he was a RB that could throw so he didn't wear out by the postseason....Jackson is not gonna be that guy.

the boston sports media esp. sports talk radio loves the real housewives aspect of our teams. must be what drives the listenership and ratings thus ads and revenue. for me, just give me the x's and o's....and of course the draft, the most wonderful time of the year outside of the pats in the sb.

ps : haven't read it yet.

It comes out May 6.

The thing is, they sure as hell acted like the plan was Stidham and/or Hoyer. They had the opportunity to sign other QBs, but they chose to use most of their cap space to retain McCourty and franchise tag Thuney.

They had the opportunity to draft Jordan Love, who was there at 23, but traded down instead. They didn't draft any QBs later on, either, and didn't sign an UDFA QB or another veteran. Hell, they were only able to sign Cam Newton because he was willing to play for essentially nothing.

D rated owner per NFLPA.

The Air Jordan's paired with suits is so 2023.

Considering that's exactly what he did with Cam Newton..

Failure to draft LJ when a Brady succesor was desperatley needed was Bill’s worst GM decision in his time with the patriots.
Has had catastrophic consequences and was the beginning of the end for the dynasty.
RBs like Sony Michel are a dime a dozen

Franchise qbs are ultra rare

It was an easy easy pick and he blew it trying to be “too smart”

If he'd gotten Jackson it would assuage his regrets for not patching things with Brady.

If he'd kept Brady he wouldn't regret passing on Jackson.

He did neither so ended up with 2 large regrets. There was a fork on the road and he didn't take it.

Yeah...heard about it on patriots news.. as much success as these great men had together it's pretty classless to not mention RK.. I mean he is the guy who hired Bill and gave him full power.

Also as a fan on the butler situation the way the Matt Patricia defense that almost lost to Blake borttles was getting carved up in the superbowl does butler make a huge difference?? Just my opinions..

To me it indicates thst Bill lacked long term vision and adaptability at this point in his career. We are seeing the end result of no succession planning.

To be fair, he did seem to do real succession planning with Jimmy G. Then he got his legs cut out from under him by Brady playing longer than seemed conceivable and it not working out to keep both. Feels like he just said **** it and gave up after that though.

I wonder what people will talk about in this topic huh
