Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

We really have people here on this board who are ready to kick Drake Maye to the curb in favor of apparent future Hall of Famer Joe Milton. This thread is going to be hilarious to read through again in the future. I wish we had a thread from when Michael Bishop got released 24 years ago, I can only imagine the takes that were shared in that one.

I'm in favor of keeping him for a back up... which the pats should have done.

I don't think either of us should gloat... this could be ugly... or good.

I'm hoping you're right.

It takes a year or two to figure out a qb... unless his names Brady.

I would've preferred he stay as well. Another year with the team, cheap rookie contract, could work his way into being a reliable backup option or someone the team can flip for assets later. I don't fault the young man for having starter aspirations, every QB should. But he hadn't earned anything other than QB3 on the roster up to that point, he needed to be focused on graduating to clipboard status rather than emergency QB status. You can't be next in line if you're not holding the clipboard first. Whatever was said between him and his camp, and the team, was enough to get him sold out of here at low cost. I'm not worried about Maye in the slightest. Let's see how he progresses with this new look coaching staff and hopefully some help on offense.

Agreed.

I think a lot of this uncertainty and current team issues stem from the mess that was last year.

I felt bad for Maye and Milton.

Honestly... both were not ready last year to start right away.

Th BB Kraft Brady debacle is still haunting us.

The team is going to have to fight their way back to the top...

Vrabel has been handed a tough task.

I can see it now. Going into the third game this season Drake has four touchdowns and zero picks, then he throws his first pick and it will be see Milton is better.

Milton’s first two years at Michigan he couldn’t beat out Shea Patterson. In his third year at Michigan he was competing with Dylan McCaffery but McCaffery transferred and Milton started the first three games but this was only a six game season due to Covid, then over the course of the next three games he lost more and more playing time to Cade McNamara. Those were some future NFL QB’s he was competing with.

At Tennessee he started over Hendon Hooker until he got injured second game of the season and didn’t win the job back from Hendon Hooker until the following season when Hendon Hooker got injured.

When I first heard he was traded I mentioned in here twice they should’ve kept him to see if he develops under Josh, if it’s true he was saying things last season then see ya later. Let’s stop with Joe Milton is the latest and greatest backup QB. Don’t worry they will draft a third QB late in this draft and we can dedicate a thread to the new third string QB after Drake throws his first pick in training camp.

This is a little different I think… we’re talking about a 25 year old 6 year college vet. That’s the age where you should be a finished product entering your prime and almost right at your ceiling. The fact that Milton isn’t makes me skeptical that he is gonna get much better than he is right now.

By comparison a 22 year old raw but talented kid like Maye is nowhere close to his ceiling. TBD of course if he reaches it.

I also don’t think Milton would make a great backup for a guy like Maye. Maybe for a vet like Dak where he could learn.

Nah it just means Mac Jones is better

I want the pats to do well this season...

Dobbs sucks... if Maye goes down I hope you enjoy your back up...( and i love Dobbs as a tn fan his hail Mary against Ga was one of the best games I have ever seen)

Milton is a better qb than Dobbs. Full stop.

It was a bad decision... which the pats seem full of in the last 5 to 6 years.

I like vrabel... but bringing in Dobbs was a fd decision.
Yeah, Dobbs is not a good quarterback and the pats would’ve been much better off keeping Joe Milton then bringing in this guy… Competition is honestly healthy and productive and nothing wrong with Milton feeling like he could be the guy to start… If Maye and family were pissed off that Drew was going to have to compete….tough…. Better get used to it. There’s no guaranteed anything in the NFL… You need to earn it… I wish Joe Milton the best in Dallas and that may will become the next superstar franchise quarterback here!

He was costing us nothing.

You still need to have 3 qbs...

Dobbs stinks on ice.

When Maye goes down and we have Dobbs running our offense...

This could be a long season...

At least Milton had a silver lining of "could be great".

I have no faith in Dobbs. I'm a u of tn fan as well... ( and respect Dobbs) I'm telling you guys... this trade was stupid. Whether it was doing a "solid" for Milton... or just making sure Maye didn't get his feelings hurt.

Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.
Well said

Yall never worked with Gen Alpha and it shows eh

That's just talk radio speculation. They shipped out Milton because he is the #3 QB and he wanted to start but the team did not think he was good enough to beat Maye for his job. That's the only reason they would keep him.
I think Milton would have made for a good TE prospect with his athleticism but he never even attempted the conversion. But who knows maybe he proves everyone wrong and takes over as the starter in Dallas.

100% this. Although I thought he got benched for Hooker, my memory sucks. Hooker outshined him once Hooker got his accuracy issues fixed.

Except Tom Brady has more character in his pinky finger, than Milton has in his whole body. Brady was the consummate warrior & competitor from college through the pro's. Milton never showed any these qualities in his 6 college & 1 pro season.
So I guess you didn’t want Randy Moss?
My favorite WR of all Times, Many people including the Patriots tired of his attitude

How well do you know Brady & Milton ?

Let’s be honest, you don’t know Milton or Brady so your views on them are based on what other people told you.

Everyone including me love Brady, but Seth Wickersham & others wrote that Garoppalo got traded because Tom didn’t want competition

I think it was because he knocked up Krafts girlfriend, but you never know.

Garoppolo got traded because he was 3 months away from being a UFA so at that point anything NE could get was a bonus.

As for Milton.... I respect his confidence. It's just too bad he doesn't have the talent to back it up.

Milton played against fourth stringers in a vanilla scheme daring him to score. If people refuse to see/acknowledge that, there's no helping them.

Drake Maye is in a stratosphere Joe Milton will never rise to.

Brady's story was eerily similar to Montana's. He was a backup for half his HS career, didn't start a full season until his final year at Notre Dame, and didn't get drafted until the third round. He started the first year and a half of his career as a backup to Steve DeBerg.

I did not want the Pats to draft Milton last year. I thought it was a waste of a pick as they still had other areas where there were better players still available that would have had more impact on the team. However, Milton came in and developed as a rookie. He was putting in the work. The Pats had McAdoo helping him almost exclusively.

It's because of that time and effort, that investment, that they shouldn't have traded Milton. The fact that Milton was superbly confident and thought he could beat out Maye was actually a benefit. Not a detriment. Why? Because that fire was pushing MAYE to be a better player as well.

As stated earlier, Milton is a better QB than anyone in the draft. But, it's weak draft and you don't weaken a position like QB by trading away your depth when the draft is so weak. Because you aren't going to get a player to fill that void. Dobbs is not that player Dobbs is the "OH F**K, Maye got another concussion and is going to be out for 6 weeks and we need a vet to step in" player. Dobbs is the vet who can offer some experience, but he's not the guy who is going drive Maye to do better the way that Milton was doing.

So, now the Pats have a situation where the put all that time and effort in and got nothing for it In fact, trading Milton likely hurt this team because Maye won't have that peer pushing him to do better the way that Milton pushed him.

Garoppolo got traded because he was 3 months away from being a UFA so at that point anything NE could get was a bonus.
And because Brady's 2015 extension made it essentially impossible, especially after SB51, to pay Garoppolo enough to keep him. I still don't understand what Belichick was expecting to happen at that point.
