Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

The face of Patriot fans when they found out about the player dump.

The Patriots don’t want Maye to have any competition because they know a portion of the fans would call for Milton if Maye
Struggles

So the eliminated the competition by trading him for basically nothing
The 2025 version of the Patriot Way
A 3rd string QB?

When the guy morphs into a hall of famer y'all can say toldjya so. Until then, the fans here at patsfans, myself included, grossly over valued the market for the player. One decent game against a disinterested 3rd string defense and some of y'all are looking for him to get his bust in Canton.

Three possibilities:

1. Eliot Wolf is in control of personnel. He doesn't know what he is doing and this is a terrible trade.

2. Mike Vrabel is in control of personnel. He doesn't know what he is doing and this is a terrible trade.

3. Mike Vrabel is in control of personnel, and this is a good trade.

I can't believe (3) so I'm hoping to God it's (1).
I think you mixed the numbers at the end there mate

Bad trade. Bad, bad, bad. I guess the amateurs (i.e. ownership) is still running the front office, ugh. The Patriots should have held out for more. And if they could not get a good deal, they would still have a great backup
Great backup is a large assumption based on very little evidence.

No Milton?

Uncue the duck boats

This trade only makes sense if the rumors are true and Milton was vocal in the locker room about feeling like he should be the QB1, which is insane given his draft position. The Pats will probably use the Dallas pick to take another developmental QB, who hopefully will understand his role.

You said “Who will understand their roll?”

Brady wasn’t happy with his roll as a backup, did you want to dump him too?

Obviously you want a backup who is happy holding a clip board & doesn’t want to start?

Wasn’t Brady the 3rd or 4th QB in 2000 as a rookie?

Don’t you think it was a good idea to keep him even if he wanted to be a starter?

What has Joe freakin' Milton done to warrant a comparison to TFB? Go Ahead, I'll wait.

I want a backup who understands that he is still not close to being a starting QB in the NFL and is open to learning and developing his craft until he earns that opportunity to start. Milton feels he deserves a chance to compete for Maye's job, when he needed to be focused on earning the QB2 spot first. He's got a big head for a 6-year college QB who still struggles with his progressions and with throwing with touch and accuracy. And a Week 18 highlight against a tanking Buffalo team isn't enough evidence to the contrary.

People want to compare Milton to Brady so bad just because they were 6th round draft picks by the Patriots, when they are nowhere close to the same player even as college prospects.

Yep

In the end, we all know that Drake was our guy. Milton would always be QB#2 unless the unthinkable happens

But this report, as soon as he's out the door, can't be taken to heart right now, at least to me
THat has ALWAYS been the plan. I'm not against trading Milton that should always have been the goal. What I'm against, is how soon. Now I think the Pats got fair value for what Milton is as an NFL QB. He is a raw but greatly talented player with suspect processing skills and questionable feel for the game, who has one end of the year meaningless game on tape. A game where he showed well.

A fifth rounder is about what he's worth....right now. I would have much rather held on to him at least another year. First it would be interesting to see how he developed under Josh. Second, it's becoming increasingly rare to see a QB go the full season without missing multiple games, so having a wildly physically talented QB who can develop into a solid back up would be an advantage. With more successful tape in the can, the greater his potential value grows.

Milton has the physical gifts that will always make a team wonder, "what if?" Maybe after a few just solid back up games, next off season he might have gotten a #3 or better. And what do you lose if he flames out his 2nd year? Almost nothing but a low 5th

No, the more I think about it the less I like it. He would have been exciting to watch in TC

He had a great game as a rookie !
Brady did nothing as a rookie but he had a phenomenal 2nd season, given the chance

The Patriots did not want fans booing Maye & calling for Milton if Maye struggles

I love Maye & I think he will do fine, but I believe they don’t want any threats to Maye

They don’t want another Jones, Zappe situation

I have seen enough of Patriot fans to know people would be calling for Milton if Maye had a couple of bad games

That's the problem with the mystery box. There's a chance his value could have gone up, if the team had enough reason to trust him with meaningful reps to show his worth. But there's also a chance his value could have dropped to the point of him being cut for nothing in return. If he goes through 2025 as the third string behind Maye and Dobbs, when will Milton show his worth? Another Week 18 against backups? Have to remember that contracts are also tied to the value of players. A cheap 3-year contract is worth more in a trade than a cheap 2-year contract of the same player. So if Milton doesn't show enough growth between now and next offseason, that's now two years gone and two years remaining and his value is lower than before. Why gave up a day 3 pick for an unproven QB when you can draft an unproven QB with that pick and get four years of cost control instead of two? It could go either way. Also betting on 6th round QB's to have meaningful value is generally a poor bet. We know there are exceptions but they are few and far between.

Chess vs checkers.

Pats draft Shadeur Sanders at #4 and a LT with the acquired pick.

Deion Sanders becomes Vrabel’s puppet master.

Cue the duck boats.

Or something.

A great game against a 3rd string disinterested Bills team? Now he's TFB?

Controlling the boos? Really? You've seen enough of pats fans ? Do you think, legitimately, that Mike Vrabel gives two ****s about fans booing?

Hopefully Maye is more accurate and reads defenses better
Milton has better pure physical tools
I dont see why Mickey D could not work with Milton.

Corky Jones was his pupil.

All I can say is this: Vrabel et al. have access to a lot more data on Milton than we do.

They may feel that, based on what they've seen in practice, that what happened with Milton in the Bills game basically is his ceiling. After all, the Bills weren't making any real effort to win that game.
No the Bills weren't. but Milton was still a rookie with no real NFL experience other than that game.

The dude was not a Patriot even 12 months.

Nope. I think this is obviously a terrible trade, so I just hope it is Eliot Wolf (with his history of terrible personnel decisions) who was responsible, rather than the new Head Coach. If it was Wolf, that's yet another reason to get rid of him.

You’re forgetting to calculate the value of a backup for a year plus whatever value they get from the replacement player. They basically leased Milton for a year.
There’s value in developing Milton for a year, more for his solid level of play when they needed him.

They got nothing for him, had they kept that 7th at least they could hang their hat on that.

The true patriots fan have one more duty

We must hope Milton fails

lol, fair enough

Vrabel has ZERO use for Milton on our even 90-man squad. Vrabel put him out to bid. He got what he could. The alternative was to cut him.
The alternative was keep Milton and showcase him in preseason.

QBs are always going down for the season. That is the time to sell Milton. These Lunkheads got a 5th and drafted Milton with a 6th.
