Stefon Diggs visiting Patriots

When you bring a player in the night before and he goes out to dinner with some coaches and front office people followed by a visit at the stadium the next day, it seems like the visit was more in-depth than they are letting on publicly.

It is possible that Diggs is asking for more than they are willing to give him at this point and leaking to the media that it was just a preliminary meet and greet to check where he is in his rehab provided cover for that.

"Remain in contact" may = call us if your price goes down

I'm getting the sense that Schultz is a new favorite among agents and teams in terms of media leaks to get a narrative out publicly.

For instance, he was the only guy who reported that Tet ran a sub 4.5 40 (hand timed) in his private workout. The other reports all stated that he ran between 4.53 and 4.58 (which, again, would translate to closer 4.6 with a laser-timed 40). His agent most likely fed the 4.48 time to Schultz, and the fact that this was the first public report turned out to be a very effective strategy.

1 year deals leave the team in a bad spot very soon, if it is to sign him get a 2 year deal at least. If he is 29 makes sense for the player to sign a one year prove it deal, now at 31 he may want the security of a 2 or 3 year deal.
Thats one way to look at it, but another is that by bringing in quality players short term they will play good football. It will put less pressure on rooks to come in and save the day, at least that is the way I see it. In theory when the older "band aid" is a FA the younger player is ready to step up. The money is also a short term thing and should not have much of an impact down the road.

Diggs could well be the backup plan if an Aiyuk trade doesn't work out. Deadline for that is April 1, when Aiyuk's $28m guaranteed payment hits. So Pats now know the shape Diggs' knee is in, and are better informed for any negotiations for both players.

Allen seems out, so if they want a top WR it comes down to signing Diggs or Cooper, or trading with the 49ers.

...probably two sides to that story.
And it's not like Diggs would be coming to a situation where there is someone else to take pressure off, whether they maybe draft a good receiver or not. But he may avoid playoff failures here...
But, sure, bring him in. Let these receivers see what a professional looks like.
Doesn't sound like he is the role model that Kupp is supposed to be, but that ship sailed.
The problem I routinely saw in Buffalo was that he was the entire offense and their defense collapsed against any competent offense. Buffalo thought he was the problem and have false hope because they stumbled their way back to the AFCCG. Remember when people thought NE's offense was just fine after they traded Moss in 2010? That came back to bite them in the ass in the divisional round. The lack of outside WR haunted them in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Bills are in for a rude awakening soon as the AFC will get better while their roster continues to decline.

He was in a good situation last year because he had help at WR in Nico Collins and Tank Dell. He needs to go somewhere he can be a complement at this point of his career.

To get a) medical confirmation on his heath status b) understand what he wants out of a career and with a team and c) confirm he wont; be a jerk if the sign him.
Depending on when he’s medically ready, it may be mid camp or later. Good to get the visit and conversations in now so if they do make a deal later, everyone is already on the same page.

No, it's not good. It's the end of the world. Absolutely no positivity will be tollerated. Haven't you been paying attention?

Another take or it leave it low ball offer would be what he'd get anyway, Patriots still operating like it's a WRs privilege to come and play for them.

Someone needs to inform them that the offense has been basically unwatchable for 5 years and Josh McDaniels isn't going to turn JAG WRs into a functional offense it was Tom Brady who did that for him.

That’s actually a good point. Diggs could be a leverage play in the Aiyuk talks as well. SF may want a 3rd, NE says “why give you a 3rd for your guy coming off an ACL tear when this guy coming off an ACL tear just costs cash?”

Keep squeezing them until the deadline and see if the price goes down, if it does then they trade for Aiyuk. If it doesn’t then they move on and give Diggs a higher offer.

Bingo.

Or we don’t get Aiyuk either because another team isn’t playing games. And/or Diggs signs with another team.

Our WR corps is so bad, we can’t afford to be cute.

We are significantly worse at WR than Ohio State was last year.

Aiyuk is probably gonna cost like a 3rd round pick. And the Patriots are probably asking them to eat some of his contract too. It's a waiting game at this point.

As for Diggs, I like him fine on a 1 year prove it deal with incentives to pay him more if he performs like a stud WR.

Harry has a future flipping burgers. What a terrible waste of a 1st round pick!
Definitely a waste of a pick. But he did make over $10m already, so I don't think flipping burgers is in his immediate future.
Unless he was a total idiot with his money, which certainly could be the case.

Diggs has been a stud WR for years. Saying 1 year prove it contract is telling him go sign with a different team. We are far too weak at WR to lay games. We have 70 mill of cap space, why do you care if we spend some of it?

Because people have worked themselves into believing the WR room is fine, just needs a couple of tweaks and Pop can flourish under new coaching and since Pop isn’t a diva, the Pats are good. The issue is Pop is at best a 3 and the rest are at best roster fodder. Like they need help really bad with a WR1 and WR2. Pop isn’t that guy. You’re going to have to bring in a diva either from the draft or FA.

Otherwise if you’re never going to give him weapons, what’s the point of having Drake Maye when you’re going to waste 2 years of his rookie deal.

I honestly don't know what kind of money he's asking for or what the sticking point of the contract is. We definitely had him in for a vist, and the fact he walked away without signing means probably either the money or the length aren't quite what he's looking for.

Like I said, I'd like Diggs, but he's coming off ACL and he's 31 so that's why I'd like to do an incentive laden deal. Maybe if we push it to 2 years does it get done? No idea.
