Offseason player acquisition thread

I think Cooper Kupp is a good example. Why send a pick for him when he's guaranteed to be cut very soon? Then they just need to pay more than the next highest offer if they want him. Additionally, why trade for him now if they think they might be able to get Chris Godwin? Godwin is better. I wouldn't be trying to sacrifice a pick for Kupp on a bloated contract before I even got the chance to sign Godwin.

Landry being another example. People were shouting to trade for him, they didn't. What happened to him? He got cut. What about Jonathan Allen? Same thing.
Taken the trades done so far (im just listing some, right?):

Texans acquire WR Christian Kirk from Jaguars for 7th-round pick
Bears acquire G Joe Thuney from Chiefs for 4th-round pick
Bears acquire G Jonah Jackson from Rams for 6th-round pick
Steelers acquire DE Preston Smith from Packers for 7th-round pick
Steelers acquire WR Mike Williams from Jets for 5th-round pick

All of these would make our roster better. We have the cap to get all of them, even at short term. We are also probably not hitting on all 4 to 7th picks

then, to me its quite obvious. Why not use some of our lower picks for someone great? If they are to be cut (say, Hendrickson, Bosa, but there are also so many wrs being traded for nothing) why not throw a 4th round to make this a done deal and show that maybe we have chance to have a Commanders style of season? Im pretty sure no one saw their season coming but it was literally to loading the roster with some long/medium shots and hitting on a QB.

We already hit on a QB, that's the hardest part

How many pre-free agency trades did the 2024 Commanders make? Zero.

Just don't understand why people are mad that the Pats aren't using their precious draft picks for some of these salary dumps. A lot of these guys are going to be cut soon when they don't get traded before tomorrow and then the Pats can get them by paying more than other teams and not have to surrender any draft capital. When you're rebuilding from the ground up, your draft picks are pretty important.
You mean like Thuney for a 26 4th rounder?
He could not help Patriots this year?
Inexcusable.

They caught lightning in a bottle with FA and Draft combined

it's a bit foolish (edit foolish as in unrealistic) to expect that. Pre-FA is just as important as any part of the season, if we consider that they do not happen simultaneosly. Too bad we had to focus on Coaching staff/Management stuff

Thuney may not have wanted to come back to the Patriots after the way things ended.
That has not been reported
Pretty sure he was grateful BB let him go

Doesn’t mean it wasn’t a factor. We have no idea why the Pats didn’t trade for him. The Patriots certainly would not want for it to get out that Thuney didn’t want to come back to the Patriots when they already have issues attracting free agents. So they would not leak that and would probably leak a different reason like they didn’t want to give up the draft pick.

Love rumors like these, they aren’t going to sign anyone unless the are the highest bidder. Glad they are at least rumored to be the highest bidder.

No really good receiver is going to be available to the pats without some combination of injury history, expensive contract, or high draft pick cost in a trade. Personally I’m fine with Godwin’s injury history (if the team is), and his potential high salary because he doesn’t also cost a pick to acquire.
This is why we need to start to draft and develop our own WRs. Ect. Or every year we are going to have to try to convince guys to come here. Salvaging polk and baker while of course signing a veteran would be an ideal thing this off season.

The only inkilng I've heard on it was from breer that the team wants to go younger on the OL. Particularly wanting guys that will be able to grow with Drake.

Here's an idea (not saying it's the correct one)

Sink or swin. If they can't beat actual NFL competition in training camp, let them go. Vrabel doesnt owe them anything

They would have needed to beat that offer which means a 2026 third rounder. That’s a valuable pick. Yes he would’ve been great to have for a few years but they want to build long-term, not short-term, and he is expensive as well.

There are other solid younger guards in free agency who will cost no pick.

That is a good idea seriously. However the last few bust notably N'Keal Harry and Tyquan Thornton last about 3 seasons... so by those metrics they will likely be here. We need to get something out of them.. I'm really wanting us to develop guys so we are stuck chasing other teams players year in and out.

At the end of the day money is always king, I’m back on the DK train, it could happen!

I wanted ONE big trade before Free Agency

Something that would at least put it out there: This team wants to win.

I would have been OK with AJ Brown, but overall I wanted them to save draft capitol so they could trade up from 38 into the first round to get Conerly, Golden, Simmons, or Hampton. Now some of them are out of reach.

This trade is good for the Carter/Hunter falling to 4 movement. I’m guessing they did indicate to Myles they’d be taking a QB. Makes it more likely Cleveland is aiming for a QB at 2.

They definitely would be less likely to take Carter.

That's what Im saying

140 million of cap space

Its A LOT OF MONEY. We can do A LOT.

But I'll wait till free agency ends before i start complaining much. Early signs are not strong, but day 1 of free agency is the key landmark/day

Make trades like for Thuney.
There’s been like 2-3 of those total so far.

Moves before the FA period aren’t conventional. Usually has to be perfect circumstances. You can’t ever expect to make moves before the tampering window starts.

I’ve been saying for months now, 2 qbs will be taken before NE picks.
