Breer on why the Pats are far behind the rest of the NFL: A very small coaching staff

Yeah we know BB preferred it this way but you can't get away with that without him. Hopefully Vrabel keeps building it up.

Can't right the ship overnight. I know fans want to be in the playoffs next year and cite Houston and Washington. We have a lot of office and roster issues that need long term fixes. The good news is I believe we have a coach who is fixing it. Its just going to take time. The Krafts need to change too. Please the the reigns to Jonathan.

I mean, this is a criticism based on how things used to be - not sure why you’d still levy this criticism now when things will most likely be changing significantly under Vrabel

I think the concern is maybe ownership will block some of it. I know Bill liked a small staff, but I also wonder how much spending limits were imposed upon him especially when the winning stopped.

BB has been gone for two seasons now, last year they had a massive staff… how’d that work out?

10 years from now the same characters ^ will be telling us Bill is the problem.

The current Patriots staff is much larger than previous Patriots staffs. And Wolf has been working to add advanced analytics to their scouting. Breer is just holding onto the same hot take he has been using for the last year and trying to keep it relevant.

Are you saying that Vrabel didn't want to hire more coaches?

Let's be clear. All this falls on the Kraft's and their unwilling to spend money (I am not discussing money for players under the cap).

Are you sure about that? Look at Belichick’s coaching staff at UNC. It is about the same same size as it was in his last few years in New England (maybe a few less position coaches) which is about the bare minimum staff you need to run a team.

Did you read the article? They’re not talking about coaching staff, they’re talking other things. Analytics department, player personnel department, etc. Noted last year was the first year the Pats had VR for their QBs —the cheap Arizona Cardinals invested in that way back when Bruce Arians was coaching Carson Palmer. That’s what Breer is saying is lacking.

And to your second point, he wasn’t really blaming Belichick for it — said Belichick’s genius helped make up for it. He was blaming Kraft.

Again, he’s not talking about coaching staffs despite the thread title (which is unfortunate).

Maybe Wolf is just starting up the advanced analytics department. His point is that the Ravens, 49ers, etc. are full throttle into this, while at best the Patriots are in the beginning phase. It’s going to take time for it to become a well oiled machine, and that’s assuming Jrwft has in fact given the green light to have Wolf invest in this to the same extent other organizations have. He’s basically accusing the Krafts of being like Mike Brown with the Bengals.

I was talking about another poster here blaming what was done last year and now on Bill… scroll up… just silly.

And the only person who cared as little about analytics and technology as Belichick was Andy Reid. How has his team been doing?

The Cardinals built the first relatively good offensive line Kyler Murray had around him his entire career last season… that helped. Beyond that analytics haven’t done sht for them.

We’re not landing a rocket on a distant moon.

That’s fair. One could argue that analytics helps on the margins — to maximize the return on what you have. But when you have the best QB in the game right now, that’s going to count for more. Kind of like us when we had the best QB and best head coach.

Yup, if you are KC, you can get away with using fewer tools. The rest choose whether to handicap themselves in the many ways that are possible, especially including facilities.

In college recruiting, teams often are so very proud to show players their facilities and the system to support platers. We simply say, have a great coach and QB and nothing else matters. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, Brady and Belichick are NOT coming back to run a team as it was run 5-25 years ago.

Jives with the results we've all witnessed over the last few years. BB was in his 70s and while maybe the game still hasn't passed him by, the industry behind that game has. The phrase "two heads are better than one"... well at one point when the game wasn't making as much money teams might not have been able to afford two heads for everything. Not they can afford however many they want. Technology advances may make up for maybe some of the scouting work that one team had better people at in the past. It's different now. BB is such a football savant that he probably was able to hold out and remain competent longer than anyone else could have while being so outdated.

Kraft himself knows no other way really either, so he wasn't in great possession to actually assess how deficient they were and still are probably. He just kept all of the staff basically without BB, so how would they know either. That's probably the concern with Vrabel that he just stuck to what he knows, but at least Vrabel has spread his wings outside the organization to see how it's been brought into the modern world elsewhere.

Don’t look at me, I’m just the Team President

Yep. This is no longer the case, but they do need to upgrade everything.
