Offseason player acquisition thread

So what were your suggestions for tackle at the time?
Not sure, it isn't my job to figure that out, but I remember feeling that Ofer at LT was a bad idea.

What were yours?

Because he lives in LA.

I’m telling you…Boston is not a draw.
Not only is it not a draw, but after two consecutive NFLPA surveys where Patriots finished almost dead last out of 32 teams in most categories, in demand UFAs may see Foxboro as a negative,

Alaric Jackson, Higgins , Trey Smith not available. Don't expect Ronnie Stanley to also be available. Somehow with the cap continuing to increase, the good teams will continue to retain their good players.

I think we will need to save up and sign some players in the middle of season and look at draft to develop. Anyways this year is not gonna be much of a shakedown. Carry over 50-80 million for next year . Just need to be smart with the money. No point overpaying mediocre folks.

Hard disagree

We need to overexpend. If top shelf isnt available, we go after the second tier, and we over-pay for them short term, maintain whoever rises up to their new salary for last year, rinse and repeat until we have a solid team

The draft. There were no good tackles in free agency, but many here have tried to pretend there were, but not one of them has said who they wanted. And when asked they leave the discussion and don’t return to it. Days 2 & 3 of the draft were their best hope of finding a tackle, and unfortunately the first round of the draft had a record run on them, and the cupboard was bare when their next opportunity arose. Some here said they should have taken Sumataia or Patrick Paul, but by their standards both of them were “ busts.” Sumataia ended up 3rd string on the Chiefs, and Paul a back up for Miami.

You can only build your team with what is available, you can’t make players magically appear. The Patriots #1 priority last offseason was to get a franchise QB, and they did that. This year it is Left Tackle, but there’s nothing you can do about those players resigning with their teams. So if there is nothing in free agency then once again they have to go try to find one in the draft. Vrabel was clear that he wanted to fix as many holes as he could before the draft, but once again you can only fix them with what is available. So for me there are still a number of guys they should try to get, Ronnie Stanley, Cam Robinson, and possibly Morgan Moses. Jedrick Willis is a nightmare, so I would avoid him.

As much as I want them to go BPA with the #4 pick they will really only have two options if they can’t fix LT, even temporarily, in free agency. Take an OT at #4, Campbell or Josh Simmons, or be aggressive and trade back into the first round for Josh Conerly LT Oregon.

That’s how I see it, if anyone else has ideas they should put them out there.

Yeah, I saw all the chatter about Paul and Sumatia(sp) prior to the draft, and have casually checked on them since, not much good there so far.
Considering Oka was disgruntled from being pulled from RT the year B4, I saw nothing good coming from him being asked to play LT here .. and we saw what happened.
I'm no genius, so I don't know how much 1/8-1/2" means for arm length, I can only remember when I was a kid.
There are a few in the draft, none other than Simmons and his injury concerns are highly touted, even though some others are discussed.
Unfortunately Jackson is gone, Stanley is supposedly in talks(damn SC keeps rising), IIRC Cam Robinson was getting torched near the EOY.

My wants start in the Trenches, shiny toys can wait.

Free agency unofficially started this week in the hallways of Lucas Oil Stadium and at nearby bars. If significantly more money was on the table for a guy like Jackson, then his agent wound have known that.

well there’s another option which would include them taking BPA and then trading back into the 1st round using draft capital for a tackle like a Banks.

Michael Mayer on trade block.

Weird from Raiders, having arguably the two best young TE's in the league and instead of playing to their strengths, they want to get rid of one.

I said that at the end of my post, except I had them taking Conerly instead of Banks, who will likely go higher, and would be harder to get. But if they can’t address OT in free agency that’s a good route to go.

I'd trade for him if the compensation wasn't steep.

Josh conerly could be the steal of the draft . I am okay with them trading up and giving a 3rd rounder and possibly additional 4th next year to trade to say 25 or 26 where he might be available

The Giants had cap space and could have signed Barkley but never offered him a deal. So genius, your take was idiotic. Teams move on from good players all the time, it’s called free agency, and it hits in a couple of weeks. You should read up on it, you might learn something.

My mistake, you already know it all.
Huck,

I see you've met wozzy

If he told them to screw last year what’s changed? He’s not going to come here. Metcalf is a better bet even though he said out loud what a lot of these guys are thinking, the weather sucks.
