Interesting to see the cuts starting. Interested to see if Tavai is one such cut - many have inquired if he knows his place.
Not a fan of JT, but you think we are really going to cut the only guy to register triple digit tackles this past season? Had a combined 115 tackles this year, 110 the year before... We aren't going to be making any additional holes on the roster... Maybe we move on after replacing him, but not before...

I disagree. We need backups like Pharms, Ellis and Pettus on the 53-man roster.

I guess that you will be very disappointed when we sign Elliss to a 3-year contract next month.

At least you won't be able to blame Wolf. It is Vrabel that you will need rail against.
Honestly, they need better backups than th3se guys. Maybe Pettus is okay. But the backups should be guys challenging the starters.

You can do better than all of those guys. A lot better.

Tavai’s production is replaced by Bentley returning. So really you are dumping him in his original role as the second inside linebacker. I don’t think it’d be too hard to find similar talent, and at least whoever you find won’t run his mouth like that - and dumping Tavai sends a message about “entitlement” like Vrabel said.

got my numbers reversed... will have to correct the op... 115 tackles this year, 110 in 2023...

just playing devils advocate here... I would like to see him jettisoned... those comments of his this past season were rather rancorous...

maybe they cut him if they find a replacement... but not before...

I think it’s showing they want a reset at certain positions. I think starting with new guys altogether is entirely the point

I think there will be a number of guys cut because they don’t fit the physical profile Vrabel wants to build his team with.

I was watching a Guy play with the Patriots on Madden 25 and saw Jalopy Tavai making a play15 yards downfield in coverage. I thought Madden said the game was realistic: utter BS. Jalopy is a coverage liability pass four yards.

No Captain Stone tribute is complete if you don’t go on and either react with a winner or dislike to the next 30 replies.
You forgot an interesting. Its the emoji i get most often from the good cap'n

I agree. I just think building quality depth will take a few years unless we really nail the next two drafts and develop some of the younger guys already on the roster.

Which I trust is what we all actually hope happens.

Nailing the draft and supplementing in free agency is the quickest way to turn things around and build a quality roster. We saw the cheap pop we got in 2021 with that free agent class but in reality only two of those guys really panned out and one of them was traded before last season.

Look at what Adam Peters (who a lot of wanted as GM last year) did with the Commanders.

1st round hit on the rookie QB (at least so far).
2nd round DT ended up playing well and starting the second half of the year.
2nd round corner looks like a potential star.
3rd round tackle was serviceable and ended up starting most the year.

In free agency they signed Frankie Luvu who was a second team all-pro. They added some veteran depth and part time starters in Austin Eckler, Dorrance Armstrong, and Zach Ertz. On top of that they added some very good starters in Bobby Wagner, Donte Fowler, and Jeremy Chinn.

Nailing an offseason like that isn't very likely but it isn't impossible if you identify the guys that will work in your system.

I see 3 possible veteran not being favored in Vrabel and Williams system.. goddy, Tavai and wise.. Vrabel likes interior pressure and thumper at LB.. show me who's the Harold Landry at LB here...

I think it's a stretch to say we need those guys. That kind of implies there's something exemplary or distinguishing about them. They're just backup caliber players. Which is fine. No team is going to have 53 all pros. By the time you get to the bottom of the roster every team is going to have some guys like that. But the goal should always be to push players of that caliber as far down the roster as possible and ideally off it.

The funny part is that we signed players like a lot of those guys this year, people will flip out and say we're dumpster diving. Chinn, Wagner, Fowler were all 1 year signings for older guys who hasn't played well. Eckler, Armstrong, Luvu were all middle tier free agents given modest multi year deals.

Commanders is a perfect example of why signing guys like that is important. You can't sign 25 year old top of the market players everywhere - it's not realistic. But rather than punt at the positions you can't add guys like that, bringing in some veteran depth and competition is important and sometimes those guys pan out in a big way.

It's just pretty rare for teams to cut guys like this now if they don't need the cap space or roster spot, that's all. Usually for such minimal savings you delay until you have an actual need to make the move because you have to build a 90 man roster for training camp. The exception would be if you think someone has earned the courtesy of being given a head start on finding a new team, and I don't view Takitaki as someone who's earned that really. He's a fringe roster type guy who it wouldn't at all be 'disrespectful" to bring to camp and force him to compete.

Like let's say for example they review the tape and decide Bentley isn't a fit. That's the type of guy who, even though there's no real need to do so now, you release early and give him a chance to find somewhere else he fits better, out of respect.
I see no reason to keep the guy around and work with him if he isn’t what you want on your team.
I support that approach over “we have 90 roster spots so let’s keep guys we don’t want”

There was no way Peters was coming to the Pats with Mayo as HC.

We need backups on the roster. But those players aren’t quality backups.
We need backups on the roster….that care better than what we have.

Now there is no reason they can’t be given an opportunity to improve and earn a spot but the top 53 players on the roster going into camp should not include those 3
