If trade down isn't an option, we will simply draft carter or graham. Certainly, Graham will be there at 4. If not, SOMEONE will want to trade for Hunter or a QB.
I have heard stories where a team can't always get the trade down that they're looking for. So best to have four guys you're willing to pick, because we might get stuck with one of them.

Carter, Hunter and Grahem.

I REFUSE to plan for Ward not being in the top 3.

Yes this ^. People say "just trade down". It's very difficult to find a trade partner willing to move up for what you think is fair. Just because the Patriots may want to trade down during the draft, it doesn't mean that they can get good value. And then for years we hear "They should have traded down to get so and so!".

Who would you try to trade down and still get?

carter, hunter, graham or trade down.

Is it really your position that one of these three won't be available AND that NO TEAM would give value for Ward?

You mean if no one wanted to trade for Ward?

OK, we will go to a fantasy world where Ward has a season ending injury in his pro-day and those players are gone.

I would want to trade down for the CB or Banks.

Yeah, I in no way think it's likely. I just think we have a coach in place who is going to prepare for any possibility.

I didn't mention a single player, nor was the post I was responding to.

This isn’t how this works. Hunter and Graham can be gone and a trade down still might not be a viable option because frankly the type of players that teams trade up for that early in the draft are at best meh. Neither Ward or Sanders goes in the first round last year.

It could easily be those two guys are gone, the only viable trade partners realize the Pats don’t value picking someone that high and went into the draft okay with the idea that they probably don’t get the QB. Then all of a sudden the Pats get lowballed in value for a trade and they gave to decide if trading the pick for pennies on the dollar is better than just gabbling who they think is BPA,

The only thing helping us right now is that the Giants are in a spot where they’d have a hard time not taking Ward if he’s there. But again, if they surprise people and just take BPA, it also comes with the implication that teams really don’t value these QB’s and that kills the trade value we could get

Trade up for Hunter

A rebuilding team has no business trading a fortune to draft a CB or WR. Which is effectively what it would it take because you’d need to jump to 1 or 2.

Are you really prepared to trade next years first and at least a 2nd for him?

This is what really could hurt the Pats. Now that Garrett wants out, the Browns might be all in on snagging a pass rusher. So if Abdul goes first, they grab Graham. Then Hunter is there and the Giants can’t justify Ward over him. Then the Pats don’t want to give the Jets a QB, the Jets know the Pats aren’t taking a QB, and the Raiders know they can get Ward or Sanders no matter what so they can stay put and don’t need to give up anything.

Btw for posterity, there's only been four drafts in the last 25 years (2010, 2011, 2016, 2018) where the first three non QB's to get picked all ended up being Pro Bowlers. So if you are a betting man, smart money says at least one of Hunter, Carter, Graham will not become Pro Bowl quality talent in their career.

So don't fall in love with anybody. A lot of this is guess work.

Why wouldn't the Patriots give the Jets the QB? They're just gonna RUIN him anyways. Jets are a disaster. We'd ask a steep price if that ever happened but I don't believe any of the top 2 QBs make it to 4 so this is moot point.

The Pats wouldn't live it down, and frankly the Jets know the Pats don't want a QB so their biggest risk at that point is that MAYBE the Pats trade with the Raiders and then they get Sanders instead of Ward.

The only incentive to trade with the Pats is for a QB, but that only matters if only one of them is there and frankly Sanders is most likely not viewed as trade worthy, especially that high.

Yes. Watch some highlights and I think you'll get way more excited watching him than anyone else in this draft by far.

This is how bad teams think. Oh look at the shiny guy in the draft. Let's overspend resources to get him. Then he either pans out or doesn't and you realize one guy didn't fix the team

Then you probably don't want to hear my plans for spending 100 mil either.

How is that you think we're going to get the talent we need?

You get talent by evaluating players well and using resources wisely and efficiently to build the team.

You don't get it by blowing your load on one white whale in a sport where you 22 starters. If Hunter fell to us you take him. You don't trade next years first and lose another potential higher end talent to get a second CB on your team.

Buy and trade our way back into then we can be more frugal and efficient to try and maintain.

We can't afford to waste time while Maye is still cost controlled.
