Tavai and Godchaux 's public sentiments are not the same. One was a mature take, the other asinine
Has nothing really to do with the comments I was basing things on what will Vrabel see in them as players.. personally I'm fine with both being here but they aren't game changers they would just be solid vets who know the game.

On the team leader piece, that is something I think should be a top priority for Vrabel. One of them is likely gone in Brissett. Andrews seems like he is 50/50 to retire. Peppers lost his captainship after the arrest. Wise is set to be a free agent, and if Bentley is determined not to be a fit, he could be cut because there is no guaranteed money. That leaves us with Joe Cardona. Which, let’s face it, he is a long snapper, and the fill-in Dugger, who had a down year. That leaves us with Maye, who likely (I hope) will be a team captain, but we honestly will need a newcomer to fill that leadership role right off the bat, like Rodney Harrison. Ideally, a defensive tone setter who has worked with Vrabel or our new DC in the past and can instill the message.
I got you.

Agreed there. I believe we have that tone setter on the roster already in peppers who I feel personally will thrive under Vrabel and can even possibly be an all pro under Vrabel and Williams. Your right on the leadership.. Drake certainly is a leader and projects to likely be a captain... to your point I still think there is a guy or guys out there that can come in and be tone setters also. Bentley is old school down hill thumper.. who's still in his prime I think we need to keep him as a leader in the defense and the team..

He's too small to be a true 1-tech NT, and he's not a good enough pass rusher to be a consistent starter as a 3-tech.
He's better than replacement level, a good guy to have on your squad for depth or injury, but I don't need to see Godchaux as an opening-game starter. We can and should do better.

And no, it doesn't have to be this year, but he shouldn't be in the long-term plans.
I agree that he should not be in the long term plans especially at 30. He is exclusively a 0-1 tech, he could easily be replaced. I don't think he is a poor fit though in a 4-3 under, which I think is going to be our base D.

Yeah, that's the thing, he's a complete misfit in a 4-3, although his lack of size wouldn't be as big a deterrent, so he'll be able to come in rotation and be fine. Pure nose tackles usually don't do too well in the 4-3, unless you're a hall of famer like Haloti Ngata.

His age is exactly why I've mentioned about him possibly not even being on the roster.. his contract was front loaded with more guaranteed money last camp.

The Godchaux discourse is exhausting. We know that he played NT in a one-gap scheme his first two years, including with Terrell Williams as his DL coach as a rookie. We also know that all of the other DTs that people are talking about, from Barmore to draft prospect Mason Graham to free agents Milton Williams and Levi Onwuzurike to trade prospect Jeffery Simmons all have played (on early downs) next to a real nose tackle. It’s remarkable how many people just want to ignore the nose tackle next to all these guys and put two of them next to each other. That’s not how this works.

The money matters, but it's always nice to see an UDFA (or late-rounder) stick around in the league.

Pharms is one of the ERFA's that should be re-signed. There are likely to be low guarantees and they have no choice.

Austin should be next.

OTHER ERFA's
For me, these are good camp players and likely competitors for the Practice Squad.

Godchaux can be that NT, I just don't think he's a very exciting one. He's a run stopper but not a very good pass rusher, and I don't think he's really that big. I think they'd rather have someone else in that spot as the starter. They could probably do worse, though.

I am honestly ready to move on from Peppers. The whole arrest ordeal whether vindicated or not isn't what you want to see from a team captain and leader in a young locker room. He also looked like a shell of himself when he came back from his suspension hiatus. I don't mind having competing in camp but that is certainly a position I wouldn't mind an upgrade.

Peppers admitted that the situation was Wearing on him mentally and that he wasn't all there like he should have.
a few weeks ago he mentioned that he had been on contact with Vrabel and Williams. He mentioned that Vrabel said he wants to do everything he can to help him as a player. We've seen enough of Peppers to know what type of player he is. He said himself he also got hurt in the 49ers game. Peppers is here for now.. ultimately I see Dell Pettus being primed for a year 2 jump and he will ultimately be Peppers replacement down the line. He's still one of the best players on the team. We have far bigger concerns than pep.

When a team runs 17 times on you and your job is a run stuffing DT.. Bill would have benched him that game. In FA..I like BJ hill myself, and I think he could likely do the job better and he adds some pass rush ability.

It is hard to make true comparisons when most teams don't even have a true nose tackle anymore. I don't know where you can even find stats if a guy was lined up in the 0/1 technique. For the few guys I think line up at NT on a regular basis, Dexter Lawrence, Vita Vea, Harrison Phillips, DaQuan Jones, and Jerran Reed they all still offer something in the passing game which Godchaux doesn't at all. Godchaux is completely one dimensional whereas some of the other guys here have some versatility.

I agree Peppers is far down the list of concerns and I don't have an issue with a clean slate if he can regain his form. I would just hesitate on making him a captain again.

I definitely hear you but I kind of discount 2024's performance for many players... It is clear that Mayo and Covington were in way over their heads and didn't have very good gameplans, and were incapable of making in-game adjustments.

Your right on that Ross, as Jonathan Jones said many of the veterans felt like they never had a coaching advantage when it came to game planning. Boy I'm glad that's over!! I guess everyone would be on a clean slate like Vrabel said.

Oh yes definitely he mentioned that he wanted to earn that back.. I'm glad to see him get through the legal situation so he can focus on ball. The guys been a consummate pro on and off the field. I want him to be the punisher in the secondary like he has been.

Pharms is training camp fodder. JAG.
This team needs big physical players on both lines
