This is a solid hire. Really nothing to complain about and a lot to like. We know exactly what we are getting and that is overall competence.

Any other hire would seem to come with lots of questions. High floor and high ceiling hire.
I feel like i'm Mr Negative on this but we don't know that, he hasn't been competent anywhere without being tied to Bill, we hope he's going to be a competent OC and his ego doesn't nuke the franchise and fall out with everyone like he did everywhere else but we don't know if Vrabel can keep him under control like Bill did.

We don't even know if Vrabel wanted him or he did it to appease Kraft, we've already got Elliot Wolf in shotgun marriage i hope Vrabel is actually happy with this hire and not just going along with the Krafts because if he has the first sign of bad losses and play the disfunction hits.

I trust Vrabel since he's proven to be actually competent outside of the Patriots bubble, i don't trust Wolf, McDaniels or the Krafts.

Love the Josh hire but my biggest concern is how Maye picks up the offense.

After watch Curran's podcast and reading this article, Brian Hoyer makes me feel a little better.

While not optimal to change systems on a quarterback heading into his second season, it’s not a deal breaker, and shouldn’t have been for Vrabel.
Maye won’t lose any steam. If anything, he’ll make strides with McDaniels guiding his every move.

Brian Hoyer, a former Patriots quarterback, agreed. He dispelled the notion that Maye would be set back having to learn McDaniels’ offense.

“I think that’s a manufactured argument,” Hoyer told MassLive recently. “If (Drake) is what we and they and everybody thinks he is, it won’t be a problem, especially the way Josh will teach it, install it, all of those things.”
“When I really look at Drake and what his abilities are, he’s not really, in my opinion, the west coast type of quarterback,” Hoyer said. “West coast fits are (Matthew) Stafford, it’s Jarod Goff, it’s guys who are not mobile like Drake is.”

So not having to pay McDaniels isn't enticing to the Krafts?

That really doesn't matter because the real point here is I thought we were burning it down and moving on from the BB tree.

McDaniels is more than qualified for the job and it's not like I'm upset by this. But you know what? I thought the same thing about bringing back Bill O'Brien.
McDaniels > O'B nuff said!

I hear the argument over how Drake might get "ruined" by too much change, but I sort of think it's all just magical thinking, something to worry about if you are looking for something to worry about: the sort of drivel Breer whines about on a daily basis.

Josh is smart. Drake is smart. They'll work it out. Both will have input into the development of a scheme which takes advantage of both of their skills and of the roster as it develops. Josh may have the social skills of a DMV lady, but he knows offensive football.

Ms. Guregian makes it sound like JM blew Vrabel away in the interview. I was skeptical, thinking the hiring was prearranged but I can see JM being the most knowledgeable.

Iirc, he employed a step-by-step approach to Mac Jones’ development. He gradually increased his knowledge and responsibility. It worked in his first year, even with his limited physical abilities. Imagine what he can do with Maye.

Now they can fill out the coaching staff, get talent on the field and invest a few dollars on food, training and people.

LOL. What the hell is porridge anyway? I should have gone with broccoli.
Crushed grain mixed with water, milk. Oatmeal is an example. Meh.

Yea I don't think Josh will "ruin" Drake but my concern is a)system fit and b) ******ing his growth.

I said in another post bringing in a guy like Hoyer - who has played in multiple systems, to mentor Drake wouldn't be a bad idea.

People seem to forget what Josh McDaniels Offense utilizes. To name a few positions the Slot WR - TE and Pass catching RB. I know we're a bringing in a RB who's a threat in the passing game: it makes everything a little easier. McDaniels Offense is a Far cry from the Two Crap Offenses we just experienced.

Meh. It's best to break away from this BB tree and I thought Vrabel was cleaning house.
Any OC who can make Mac Jones look like a Pro Bowler belongs in this League. You'all are selling Josh short: we won't field the 32nd Ranked Defense and Offense this time around. Football is a Team sport and we have competence and not incompetence at the HC position... believe.

I watched the video with Josh talking to Eldeman from last year on how he would develop Maye and what he said makes sense. We saw that he did having Jones as a rookie qb seemingly moving in the right direction based on his skillset. Mayes skillset is far greater and Josh can open up that play book further some Im curious to see how Maye plays in year 2. I am also curious to see how Josh handles Mayes development and the offense in general with no BB looming over him. Will Vrabel give him room to run it as he sees fit? Is AVP still in the building and if so whats his role? Tune in next week young thundercats as things continue to develop.

Again I'm not saying that it's a bad hire. I'm indifferent on it.

He will obviously be better than anyone we've had since he's left.

I guess I was just under the understanding that Vrabel has his own thing going on.

I don't know if I would consider Dakota from Braintree a reliable source, but I will post this here anyway.

Matt Cassel had a better year and went to the playoffs with Todd Hailey in KC.
Hailey was the HC, not the OC: that was Charlie Weis. So Cassell performed well under the same coaching tree. Arguably better. Fewer passing & rushing yards, lower completion %, but better TD/INT ratio in KC. He was also two years older. Anyway, that only strengthens the case for McDaniels. After Weis left, Cassell came down to earth.

Supposedly.

Meh. I’m hoping that with Drew… McD will have success here again. I guess what we know is better than what we don’t know. McD is very predictable and has trouble making adjustments especially at half and in critical parts of game but he has had some success here especially when Tom was here of course. Wish the best for him obviously!

Be as well hiring Byron Leftwich he was good with Brady too and an "offensive genius" and unemployed and terrible without him, that's Josh McDaniels.

People don't like the facts, they think Josh McDaniels is good cause Tom Brady carried him in and cause Mac Jones looked average for a few weeks but he's never done with Detroit just did with Goff or what Shanahan has done with Purdy or what Minnesota got out of Darnold.

This is a Tom Brady offense that doesn't fit Drake Maye.
In fairness with Purdy he walked into a loaded team with elite weapons and an awesome OL. Once some of them got hurt Purdy came back to earth. Put Tua and Purdy on the pats this past year and one would be concussed …again and the other would have struggled just like everyone else…. But in getting to your point about McDaniels, I would agree that Tom made McDaniels and Leftwich look absolutely brilliant!

By all accounts Maye proved that he has the mental game as a rookie. Josh has a proven record working with the arguably the most cerebral QB in the history of the NFL. That is a lot of insight to bring to the partnership with Maye. He has also experienced creating game plans to develop a rookie QB. With Maye's willingness to be coached and JMD's experience the opportunity is there to take a big step forward next year. At a minimum the offense will maximize the talent on the field and attack opponents weaknesses which is all anyone should expect.
