By the end of McDaniels last tenure I was tired of him and his conservative play calls.
After he left it seemed like the offense and the offensive coaching got progressively worse. Now my opinion on him has turned and I think he is going to be a big upgrade.

That being said this hire won’t mean much in year one if they can’t upgrade the offensive line. It doesn’t matter how good a coach you are if your lineman are getting blown by every down there isn’t much that can be done.

Imo McDaniels is a good OC, but a bad head coach. Him being a bad head coach hopefully will keep him in New England for a long time.

Presumably, that's supposed to be Gibson.
I thought the same when he was signed. I don't know why he was not used that way. Quick passes to the RB are a good way to keep the pressure off the OL. I saw Jonathan make a note about that in his list of bad play calls. LOL

I agree but Vrabel mentioned the day he was hired that he wants to run both zone and gap schemes and switch depending on either what the players can handle and/or what will work better against the defense they’re facing. Makes me wonder how effectively Josh can implement zone schemes.

On a side note - I’m curious if he hires Carmen Bricillo from the Texans as his OL coach.

I would think that he would have to go for more athletic OL if that’s the case. They are better suited to try and run both than straight ahead power blockers are. If he can pull it off that would be great, but he’s going to have to get great OL to do it. And I’m fine with that. After the QB position the OL is the most important unit on the field, followed by the DL. The QB and OL can do more to control a game than anything else.

So… McDaniels is worse than everyone else available? It’s an incredibly small list of people I’m guessing . He’s not going anywhere after this , at least not for awhile ? Has a couple of them big trophies .. coached a couple of ok players. I’m sure he’ll do ok ?

I think Wolf got Gibson for that reason and then the offense that the coaches called never used that skill. It's one of the reasons I'm hopeful Wolf, working with Vrabel, will be improve this offseason.

Wonder if Jaheim Bell can convert to FB.
ChatGPT lol
Bell is unplayable as a blocker by NFL standards right now. He lacks the physical demeanor you want, and he far too often gets blown up at the point of attack. Bell has some use as a moving blocker in space, but he can not be a point man in any run scheme.

Assuming Strange is converting to C, they still have Andrews kicking around, and Onwenu and Robinson currently figure to be the starting guards - primarily being a power blocking team seems much more fitting in the short term.

If McDaniels was the choice all along, I bet he let Mike know it was ok to let go all the coaches on offense. He might have been talking to former and other coaches around the league for days if not weeks. It's not tampering if your not with a team.

That was with Cam and a Rookie. We now have a young exciting player in his second year he'll open it up and will get creative in how he uses Maye.

I agree. Now they need to go get the tackles in free agency and the draft.

I would much rather see them go after tackles aggressively in free agency than WR. Move Onwenu back to OG where he really belongs.

Getting a very good third down back will be essential.
Just found one in the draft forum. Lequint Allen from Syracuse. 2nd most yards amongst draft eligible RBs, most receptions, most snaps in the slot, 3rd most out wide and 2nd highest graded pass blocker. Over 1500 total yards.

JMD treated Mac with kid glove that season. Developing Mac was a higher priority than winning every game. There were a few games, early in the season, where he didn't try for the comeback if it meant asking Mac to do too much.

like who?
There are people whose job it is to figure that out. Seems like they took the easiest answer out of comfort and caution.

That has been a missing part of the offense since James White's hip injury. A good third down back has always been a big part of the Pats offense, it is also important for WCO.
Did...did you not watch Gibson play last season?

He has proven to be adaptable and has, according to multiple reports been working on adaptng to recent offensive concepts. Say thank you and eat your porridge.
Thanks for what? I hate poridge too!

I prefer they get tackles in the draft and WR's in FA.
Tackles are the key to unlocking this offense. The prevailing wisdom is that teams don't let good tackles go to FA so the draft is the only realistic source. If there are no proven tackles available in FA, I would like to see the team do some homework and find some diamonds in the rough. Maybe Cowden can help with that.
