The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

Dunno if he's letting it hang out there on purpose, just some media trying to get clicks. No way no how he bolts on UNC.

I don’t think he’s leaving either, I just think that letting it hang out there could lead some high quality prospects to have second thoughts.personally I think that winning a college national championship would enhance his legend more than the wins record would.

He’s hurting himself by letting it hang out there. He should make it clear he’s not going anywhere.
Didn’t he just go on Pat McAffee and say he didn’t take the job just to leave?

He was never going anywhere, he wanted the UNC job. He took it.

That's not being clear or definitive at all. BB knows more than anyone the power of wording.

"I didn't take this job to leave....but previously unavailable postions offers came up so I acted accordingly"

"I will be the coach for UNC this season, I am not leaving" would be clear.

Regardless, still feels like the interest in him isn't genuinely that strong so it won't end up mattering.

Agreed. For me there are arguments to be made both for and against Bill as the GOAT coach, as there is with others on his level like Lombardi. Winning a natty would make it indisputable.

I don’t think there’s any argument to be made against Belichick as GOAT coach. He’s the best coach in history, and he did it in the salary cap era. And I think the “ he only did it because of Brady” argument is completely bankrupt, as he’s the one who drafted him, kept him as a 4th QB, taught him how to be a pro QB, and put the players and game plans in place around him to win 6 Lombardi’s. It’s case closed imo, and he could walk off into the sunset with his 24 year old and be the GOAT.

Oh yeah there are tons of great arguments in favor like those ones. Last few years notwithstanding I also think he's one of the best GM's ever. He has innovated in the area of team building especially in the first half of this dynasty and in defensive X's and O's. A lot has been said about Bill's record sans Brady but I think his record WITH Brady "counts" too..

On the other side of the debate I would say he doesn't actually have the wins record (Shula), he doesn't have the highest win pct in the Super Bowl era (Madden I think), nor the best playoff win pct (Lombardi) he is a legend inside the football world but not so much a cultural icon outside of the sport like Lombardi is, he doesn't have the best record compared to his peers at elevating his staff (his coaching tree - woof. Mayo is another L), he seemed to be unable to build the modern offense as we saw the last couple of years and he's done it all with only one QB where his peers like Tuna, Reid and Gibbs have won with multiple.

The coaches you named had less success in an era where you kept your team together as long as you wanted to. The one measure no one talks about his how many different players won Super Bowl rings under Belichick, the number is in the hundreds. On the 2014 team that beat Seattle there were only 2 player who were still on the roster from the last Super Bowl they won, Vince Wilfork and Brady, the other 51 were all different. I don’t know of any other coach who won Super Bowl’s with 51 different players. Shula and Lombardi’s teams won them with the same rosters, and the same basically goes for Noll, who had his core intact throughout their run.

I'd love to see a stat on that with Bill comparing him to other coaches.

I think top prospects are going to flock to UNC to play for Belichick.
Another reason why the talk about him bolting for the NFL now is stupid.

I would to, but it takes more research than I have time for.

Not sure about the HS kids but any aspiring pro will.

Get paid and spend a year being coached by BB and his staff who have also coached at the NFL level. No brainer.

Of the four coaches you mention you're the only one who would even consider 3 of the 4. Reid everyone would give a chance to catch him but you do realize he's lost a SB head to head and lost a Conference championship head to head. He's still got a very long way to go.

Tuna needed Bill to win.

Gibbs doesn't get enough credit but not even Redskins fans would take the stance you're trying to.

Even Lombardi is still extremely far behind Bill and won with same QB the whole time too which is typically you're biggest crutch to hate BB.

There is no debate Bill is the greatest deal with it.

“I didn’t come here to leave” is definitive.

I'd love to see a stat on that with Bill comparing him to other coaches.
Quick example are the 49ers. Only four players have won 4 rings 81-88 w/ Walsh and Siefert

Montana
Lott
Keena Turner
Eric Wright

Randy Cross won 3 but retired after the 2nd Bengals SB.

I think you have that backwards. Tuna built the foundation for Dynasty 1.0 and introduced Bill to Kraft. BB was a failed head coach in Cleveland until he went back under Parcells wing to learn how to be an NFL head coach.

Which is...?

The trophy is named after Lombardi for a reason. Bill isn't the icon that Lombardi is especially outside of the football world.

What's Lombardi's playoff record?

Hint: Bill has been to as many SBs as a HC as Lombardi has playoff wins.

There is no one on Bill's level it's a fact. Maybe someday you'll drop your axe and admit it.

Go look at the coaching staff Belichick put together in Cleveland, they would have turned into great football team if Modell hadn’t pulled the rug out from under him.
