Sounds like it based on this tweet coming from the team. Don’t remember any other announcement about his or AVP’s future with the team.

“if 2024 DeMarcus Covington does not return”

The rules for interview requests specifically say “open” position, so my understanding is that they can’t request interviews from other teams until Covington has been let go.

Most excellent news if true. I have read earlier this week that steve belichick was offered a job by mayo but it was a demotion. Covington was then give the d coordinator job. Rather insulting to Steve B

He may be even more deserving of being let go than was Mayo, which is quite the statement.

I've busted BB Jrs chops on this board but I think the kid knows what he's doing.

In his first year at UofW as DC they improved in every significant statistical category defensively.

Mayo was playing politics.

Is it possible if he would agree to a demotion that he would not be let go?

Mayo was playing politics as Pats fans slowly got stoned

“With the defensive coordinator role, the other most important spot on his staff, Mayo was surprisingly decisive. Even though Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, had been the Patriots’ defensive play caller in recent years while they routinely boasted top-10 units, Mayo didn’t offer him the chance to continue calling plays, according to a team source, opting instead for young defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington. Mayo offered Steve a lesser role, but the younger Belichick declined and left to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.” (per The Athletic's Chad Graff)

Just one of the many poor decisions by coach Mayo.

And the next HC at UNC after his Dad. Poor Mayo now have to go the High School route. How the boot licker have fallen. BB never had much to say about Mayo... I wondered why but this past season answered my question.

If he's not fired yet it's only for accounting reasons or whatever. At no point has the possibility existed that a new HC would retain him in his role as DC.

Yes, they're sharing being angry at Mayo
With Vrabel it'll feel more much like home...

Exactly.

By shutting BB Jr out, what Mayo did was not in the best interests of the NEP.

Furthermore, it's pretty obvious why BB had BB Jr call the defensive plays.

Even if he was willing to stay, it is probably best for a clean start. Too many players were frustrated with playing out of position.

I agree, but the problem might be game planning, quick decision making, and other liabilities needed to be a DC.

Before being named defensive coordinator, young players like Keion White, Christian Barmore, Anfernee Jennings were developing nicely with him as position coach.

It is probably best to start in a new system, but isn't this a new system?

We praise Dante, and I'm not saying Covington is anywhere near that good of a coach, but maybe he likes it here, and frankly he's probably not getting better offers.
