Vrabel's Staff Discussion Thread (Discuss related news here)

Vrabel + Josh + Saleh I don't like it.

Too many big names, it usually doesn't work, just like those all star rosters.

Josh I can tolerate, even though I would like something new here, Saleh is looking for his next HC gig

I don’t want Saleh…way too much zone in his scheme for me.
I get it, though I doubt Vrabel would very shy about telling him of any changes he'd mlike to see.

I think it is critical that Vrabel's personnel guy gets precedence over the Krafts' lapdog/binky Eliot Wolf. Not to do so is just asking for trouble, in part because Wolf is incompetent, in part because he is a backbiting stab-in-the-back punk. I really hope Vrabel refuses this arrangement. If he does not, that will be his first mistake as HC and a lousy place to start. If Wolf is forced upon him, it will be a continuation of the Krafts' butting in where they have no competence whatever. Given his experience at Tennessee having a GM forced upon him, I would find Vrabel's agreeing to this to be inexplicable, frankly.

The cleanest and wisest course of action would be to kick Wolf to the curb, but apparently he too must have charmed Robert on some vacation trip.

I hope so.
Yep, I have yet to hear an actual argument against going with McDaniels. If there is an an empirical argument against him as OC, let's hear it.

And why would Cowden even agree to this?

I don't think the tweets are right; no way Vrabel takes this on without his own personnel guy in place.

me too
his offense was always predictable, people complaining about AVP calling runs up the middle non stop have forgotten about mcdaniels offense as well as his predictable screens
I find your generalization to be unwarrranted. There are in any case reports tha McD has been studying up on how to "modernize" his approach to offense, how to incorporate principles from more recent pro and college schemes and to simplify his approach. He's a serious student of the game, I think, who has a demonstrated ability to develop quarterbacks. While I am sure there are excellent alternative, I have not seen a convincing reason not to consider him a strong candidate for the job.

I am basing this on the recent article in the Headlines section her at Patsfans. I myself see no reason for Vrabel or Cowden to go along with such an arrangement, but this article, anyway, seems to imply they might. I certainly hope the article is wrong.

I'm not totally against Josh being brought in as OC. Here's why: He has a QB in Maye that is bigger, stronger, faster, and quicker than Brady ever was. Maye has a cannon for an arm, but can make touch passes as well. And, although an OL that can not only provide hopefully excellent pass protection is assembled, but also the same regarding run blocking (with a hopefully talented and deep RB Corps), as you don't want to be one dimensional as an offense. And add a true #1 WR and the rest of the WR Corps being truly solid (from a solid high quality #2 WR, to a solid Slot WR, etc.), you then tailor that Offense to Maye's abilities.

Maye clearly not only has a high IQ in general, but the same regarding his Football IQ. The way he handles himself in Press Conferences (especially during this past season's train wreck), was really impressive. And, unlike Brady being superb in the pocket, Maye can do the same, but has the athletic ability to run out of pressure that Brady physically couldn't do. Not to mention you can have plays that allow you to design plays to not use him like Josh Allen (where he's the Top 3 in rushing every season because the RB Corps sucks (like the Bills until the last year or two when they finally drafted decent RB's).

I would also keep AVP as strictly a QB Coach, as he's done well with the basics regarding Maye and Milton. But, even if Vrabel goes in a different direction regarding OC and the whole Offensive Staff, consider that two of the top level offensive minds in the NFL (one of them being the Packers current HC and was OC before that), he has proved he can identify Offensive Coaching talent. He got a the most out of JAG QB's and an owner at TN that was at best, less than desirable. We always knew this was a full-blown rebuild, but Mayo just wasn't qualified and even the Defense which was in the Top 10 the Season before despite injuries, got a lot worse. We simply saw a poorly coached and undisciplined football team this past season that showed no improvement and even regressed (except for having a #1 CB and now a Franchise QB).

For the time being, at least we can have hope that the team will at least get back to being fundementally sound and better at acquring and coaching talent. Ben Johnson may very well become a SB Winning HC someday. But, Vrabel, at worst, is worthy of having true optimism about.

It is no coincidence that Cam Newton and Mac Jones were able to string together 17 wins in 2020-2021 with him as an OC.

I wonder what happened in Miami that Wes got fired. They did have a great WR room, but they also looked well coached and effective during his 3 years down there. Anyone got any info?
@RobertWeathers speculated it was to placate Hill’s tantrum.

Exactly

this is number 1 by far. I was going mad with McD playcalling, and he's had a much better roster than AVP had/has here

McDaniels and Saleh under Vrabel and suddenly we have a serious organisation again.
Big no on Saleh, don’t want a cover 3 defense. Man scheme with Gonzo, his scheme takes what Gonzo does best away.

Am I the only one who does not want McD back?
If you’re going to run the Erhardt/Perkins offense, he’s head and shoulders over anyone else. He can work here with Maye the rest of his career if he chooses. He’s done getting HC jobs. It’s a layup if you want that system.

I have nothing against MacDaniels, I just don’t want them to go back to the EP system.

Didn’t he incorporate parts of other offensive systems into the Patriots playbook? I know he used different OL blocking schemes.
