I would say second round was a huge struggle for him. Not the latter half of the 1st round.Yes, the patriots have struggled in picks from the middle of the first until the end of the second, the sweet spot where Belichick made his personal choices and didn't do well at all. With later choices (and with the top of the first), Bill did better than others.
There are a ton of good players picked in the middle of 1st round to the end: Graham, Wilfork, Mankins, Watson, McCourty, Solder, Chandler Jones, Hightower, Gonzalez. Only true busts were: Wynn & Easley.
Second round had some of their best players but were mostly busts: Bethel Johnson, Chad Jackson, Terence Wheatley, Ron Brace, Darius Butler (tho Butler played well on other teams), Cunningham, Spikes, Dowling, Tavon Wilson, Dobson, Jordan Richards, Cyrus Jones, Duke Dawson, JoeJuan Williams, Uche, Tyquan. Hits: Light, Branch, Eugene Wilson, Vollmer, Chung, Gronk, Vereen, Jamie Collins, Garoppolo, Dugger, Barmore, Keion. So 16 busts in the 2nd and 12 hits. Now you could argue that the hits in the 2nd rd were as good as the hits in the 2nd half of the first.
If only Belichick were forbidden from taking DBs and WRs in the second round, he could've eliminated 12 of his 16 busts.
