This is how I see it working out as well. Unless Johnson totally blows everyone away, Vrabel is the safer choice. I am good with Vrabel, the team needs his sense of determination right now. Somehow it feels like Mayo defending why he went for the safety instead of kicking the extra point by saying that everyone was mad when he did it the other way a few games before that. How is this brain trust going to make the decision? My fear is that they are still going with their gut and no well thought out reasoning.

It’d be great to turn it around and make the playoffs next year, but not sure that’s what the priority should be. They’re 4-13 in back to back years with probably the least talented roster in the league and 3 straight years bouncing around coordinators/systems on offense and even on defense to some degree last year. First and foremost, they need to be worried about just locking in a culture, idea of how they want to play, system of player development, etc.

Hopefully that leads to a big jump in wins right away, but I care more about seeing the team actually progress. In 2022 (the Patricia OC year) they were “win and you’re in” for the playoffs the last week of the year. I still look at that season as a total **** show because of how obvious it was that the culture was eroding and player development was failing. More wins next year won’t make me happy if it still looks like their floundering and struggling to find an identity and to develop players and just getting some lucky bounces and/or good scheduling fortune.

Go down the list of where teams finish and who is their QB.

Example: NFL East
1) Philly - Hurts
2) Washington - Daniels
3) Dallas - mostly Zack
4) NY - mostly no one

This may come as a surprise to you, but consistently the order of finish throughout the NFL directly correlates to who has the best QB play. Every year. Yes there are minor exceptions like Cinci with a meh coach finishing below Pittsburgh or Minnesota running with Darnold, but every single year with few exceptions (one of which Daboll was his first year) the finish represents QB play. And the teams with the best QB's generally go furthest in the playoffs. Recent Super Bowls have been all Brady and Mahomes. Do other coaches suck because they can't break through that? (HINT: McDermott kinda of does.)

I hate to use the cliche that stats are for losers, but you don't win with that Giant's QB mess, even if you are GOAT. No one would.

Somehow Daboll squeezed one year out of Daniel Jones, who isn't even a top backup, and it has been his downfall.

Wouldn't the odds be 28% and not non-zero? Of course non-zero technically means anything other than zero, and that is correct if the math says 28%, but I don't think its your point.

I don’t see surprise in the fact that for most of that period 12/32 teams (37.5%) of teams made the playoffs and 28% of teams that changed coaches did.
Teams that change coaches are almost always bad teams. So this stat actually probably favors first time HCs given the circumstances.

Trying to decipher your post, but it seems that is entirely NOT what I am saying.

Judging a coach entails evaluating how the coach has performed relative to the team's talent. And with today's rules, this almost completely revolves around the QB. I know. I know. It takes a little thinking.

As an example, McDermott has under performed. The Bills should have at least made a Super Bowl, and would have done so at least once, if he wasn't a meh coach. That's the credit or blame that falls on a coach for what they do. Daboll has no chance making chicken out of chicken salad in that mess, but has done so 33% of the time. If you don't see that, that's fine. It doesn't appear from your posts that you are able.

Listening to Boomer Esiason discuss Milton and compare him to Shadeur Sanders made it sound like Sanders was not a particularly superior prospect.

I watch very little college ball but I did catch CO for a few minutes this year. In that short time I wasn't impressed by Sanders at all.
