If this is true, due diligence can include 10 interviews and still end up choosing before the Championship games,

If we want Ben Johnson to be able to choose between us a CHI, then we could wait and lose Johnson AND lose Vrabel.

OK, we know???

Let us say that DET wins the championship and CHI and NE haven't made a choice. in a couple of days.

Should Vrabel wait and HOPE that Kraft won't take Johnson and CHI takes someone else? After all, until the CHI choice the patriots will be fine if they are OK with either. Obviously, if it is clear that CHI also wants Vrabel or Johnson, then all parties can wait until after the Super Bowl.

Vrabel could reasonably pressure the team to make a decision or Vrabel will need to go elsewhere rather than be out of a top job.
I think the Patriots will will have to offer one or both of Vrabel and Johnson the job prior to that time.

Can Johnson interview before the Super Bowl if DET is in the Super Bowl?

I know Ben Johnson can't officially accept until after the super bowl if they go that far. But would it REALLY be up in the air that long?

Also, I think as bad as we make this team out to be, you have to compare us to the other job openings...

1) NYJ: A 5-13 team with a toxic locker room and an old QB who might be difficult to work with and no succession plan. It's a situation where the perception is that you're set up for success to start but that might not be reality and you're 1-2 years at most away from needing to totally rebuild, including finding a new QB.

2) JAX: Lots of talent on paper but a GM that reportedly people don't want to work with and hitch their wagon too. Immediate expectations of winning as opposed to a longer run of really establishing your team how you want it. More just expected to pick up the pieces and go vs build the way you specifically want it.

3) CHI: Decent roster and talented QB in place. As much as we overanalyze and harp on the Krafts though, this isn't exactly a great organization to work for historically either. Probably more immediate expectations here than with us.

If feels like us and CHI are the two best job openings all things considered. NYJ and JAX seem like volatile situations where it might not be best for your long-term career. NE is mostly a blank slate with the hardest to find piece in the QB already seemingly in place.

IDK, maybe I'm wrong, but I sort of view this like tampering with free agents. Coaches aren't supposed to accept jobs before their season is done... WINK WINK

I'm just not sure I buy that you're actually going in blind. And even if you are, there seem to be 2 really, really good candidates and two clearly most desirable jobs open. It feels like Vrabel and Ben Johnson will end up here and in CHI in some order.

Jax's GM put together a very fine roster though unlike us.

Kraft thought he was the former Canadian runner and it would serve the satisfy the Rooney rule
Loved that guy. Remember, as an eighth grader, 1988 Seoul olympics was when I first realized “they’re all doing it”. Sadness. Carl Lewis grows half a foot at 22….. haha. He was just smarter about when he took his stuff.

He was like a cheetah.

Would rather see Vrabel than this guy.
They are hiring a head coach not an OC.
How did the last rookie head coach work out??
He didn't work out well at all. But in saying that you can't assume that a new one would be the same. All head coaches are rookies at the beginning. Even BB

So, the coach who is our #2 choice has the option of deciding to pass on the waiting and takes a job in the two weeks before the Super Bowl.
Let him. He goes to the Jets, he'll be like ever other Jets HC. He goes to the Bears, he makes Johnson's decision easier.

Any other interviews requested?
Brady, Moore, Kingsbury, Lafluer, Flores?

Part 1. Chiefs and Lions make the Super Bowl
Part 2. Chiefs talk up the "3 peat" for two weeks
Part 3. Lions absolutely smoke the Chiefs in the big game 54-27
Part 4. The next day, Ben Johnson announces that he is the new Head Coach of the New England Patriots
Sounds good to me

...what?

They'll offer the job to whomever they want to take the job.

Yes, he can interview this week, and the week before the Super Bowl, since Detroit's on the bye.

I like Johnson too but this is a charade and due diligence to keep fan base happy….but they are going with Vrabel I’m sure
Sadly I agree

He can accept on the bye week before the Super Bowl, officially.
No, it wouldn't be up in the air that long. If he interviews this week, and is offered the job, then he takes the job.

For sure. But windows in the NFL tend to only last a couple of years and dysfunction/internal conflict can rip apart the most promising situations. By all accounts Ballke isn't great to work with and there's not a lot of stability there. There's lots of pieces to work with for immediate success record-wise, but also lots of obstacles to building the kind of program you want to run.

Every coach will have their own criteria, but by all accounts on Ben Johnson and Mike Vrabel, they seem to really want a lot of say in the organization and building an overall football program full of guys they have good working relationships with. We'll see what happens, but the Jags job feels like it might be more attractive to someone like Doug Pederson who's already made a stop or two and is looking for a ready-made situation, compared to a younger head coach who's trying to launch a long-term career for themselves somewhere.

When you look back the dude was almost unfathomably jacked
