Im not gonne be a revisionist, as Im probably one of the the few to """defend""" Mayo permanence

but boy did that Javai quote pissed me off. What can kind of entitlement is he brewing in there where player have the gut to say "The fans should know their place".

Anyway, even though Im glad he's not around anymore, whoever comes next needs to be a bullseye. They better bring some prestige to New England, otherwise I do not think any FA will come sniff to Boston unless they are paid the top-est of dollars

Big agree on Springer, hopefully he is kept. New HCs do keep the existing ST Coordinator fairly often if they’re good. They really did get lucky with him, he’s surprisingly great. I think he will be an HC eventually.

I’d keep McCartney too.

I could see them taking Carter or Graham at #4 over McMillan or Banks/Campbell if they hire Vrabel

****ing Mayo cost this team a nice haul with his ******** yesterday
Yeh I dont know, normally I'd agree that the pick cost the Pats. But this is the worst draft class in maybe 20 years, there really are not any fantastic QB's coming out, Sanders is ranked at I think 22. I just dont think it is as bad as folks think because it just isnt a good draft, Im sure we might have gotten an extra pick but not a "haul", there just are not enoug really great payers coming out to this draft. My 02 and I could be wrong.

I also dont think you can ask a team to tank a game, like telling you to do your job ****ty, its a reflection on the player, and Buffalo sure make it clear they were not winning that game.

You say that but qb is almost certainly going 1 and 2.

Someone would of jumped up because someone always falls in love. Especially someone who needs to make a splash because their job is on the line.

The Patriots will end up with the player they want. There's no doubt about it. But they probably could of got the player they wanted AND some draft capital just by losing yesterday and this is not a team that can afford to give up any capital.

I was shocked at how quickly Kraft made that decision. Makes it seem like they have known for a while this would be the move...
Which gives me a little more hope in the Krafts (Bob & Jon) ability to make decisions for the good of OUR team.

I'm not dumb enough to think this season was ALL Mayo's fault. But, he clearly isn't a guy that can quickly turn your franchise around.
It's the wrong place at the wrong time - not the time for a young guy to learn on the job for a few years.

Bob publicly confessed his mistake, and made a very unexpected humble move to quickly reverse course. Well done.

Now GET THE RIGHT GUY!

He also could have had them run the ball right up the middle on 1st and 2nd downs then a half ass pass play then punt it, especially once Buffalo got the lead. It was easy as pie...and he ****ed that up too.

Nah, worst coach I have ever seen.
Not to mention the aggressive QB sneaks, RPO plays, designed QB runs, etc... You know, the stuff he refused to do all year when he needed to but now suddenly was able and willing to do right as soon as he was not supposed to do it.

Whoah good question I meant John Gruden. Jay Gruden is interesting, I didnt even know about him. He's got a ring and pretty decent experience including playoffs. His last stint was terrible with the Jaguars but I dont know the circumstances.
I think Jon is done. Jay seems like he was a decent OC. Had some success in Washington. Not in my top 5.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

I think this is multi-layered.

1. They needed to get Mayo out NOW because they were personally pissed at him and so were the fans.
2. Free agency is in 2 months and the draft is in 3 months, so they want the current scouting work to continue unabated in the interim and not have to pause everything.
3. They realize they don't know what they don't know, so rather than blow everything up and then try to figure everything out all at once, they're starting with 1 thread (HC), talking to people, and then will make changes elsewhere as they realize it is necessary. For instance if they talk to Vrabel, BJ, Saleh and whomever else and discover that their own front office is not up to par with other org's, that will cause them to start taking action in regard to that.

Are you going to fire Vrabel for going 3 and 14 and getting the number 2 pick?

Makes you think, doesn't it?
It mainly makes me think about AVP. Maybe he was never that bad of a playcaller at all and Mayo was pushing him to be conservative, but then acting like he had nothing to do with it. I just find it hard to believe that AVP suddenly discovered how to be creative and use all these tools in his bag right at the last second with his 3rd string QB. No way. He actually had a clue but was handcuffed, and then Mayo took off the cuffs for the last game.

If Vrabel is the guy i'm betting he'll want to talk to Covington as the defensive system will kinda sorta be the same. While I don't think he had a very good year as a DC, he did get some recognition for developing Barmore and Wise. Might be work keeping as a positional coach.

Springer should get a look.

Maybe AVP is kept as a QB coach. Really depends on the system they want to put in.

We also don't know how much influence Mayo had on the D and O.

Actually, I would love to see Vrabel sign with the Jets and the next day give Woody Johnson a piece of loose-leaf paper saying, "I resign as HC of the NYJ."
Hmmmm….

Nice symmetry.

Are you going to fire Vrabel for going 3 and 14 and getting the number 2 pick?
Just like Mayo, it's not about the record, it's about the circumstances.

If they add a bunch of players by spending tons of cap dollars and they draft solid players but Vrabel somehow can't win even a third of the games with a talented roster then yes that would be grounds to terminate.

Conversely if they again don't really add any talent for some unknown reason (even though they really NEED to spend to start approaching the "floor" of minimum spend they need to hit over a 4 year window) and they don't draft well, but Vrabel manages to turn around a lot of the problems this team faces in regards to culture, tackling, effort, attention to detail etc, then no he should still be kept.

If he faces the second option above but does not resolve these problems and just looks like Mayo part 2 then yes he should be fired.
