The Patriots’ defense ranked first in EPA (expected points added) per play during Steve Belichick’s tenure as play-caller from 2019 to 2023. They’re currently 30th this season.

“Yeah, I would say every year is different. Every defense is different. So that’s kind of how I look at it. Like I wouldn’t read too much into it,” Covington said. “So for us, we’re just trying to do the best we can every week, us as a coaching staff, us as the players, and I think those guys are working hard and trying to do what we ask them to do. So, I look at each year being different. So, like what you did last year, what we did previous years, every year is different. So that’s kind of how I look at it.”

Seriously? Don’t read too much into being bad on the field? Like that doesn’t matter? Who TF would say that with any drive to be great?

My God..............Mayo is contagious

**At least he didn't point fingers at the players or call them soft like our CEO HC**

Sorry I can't read the link because not subscribed... but from the OP's quote it sounds like they asked him about their ranking fall off and he said he doesn't read into rankings and tries to focus on the week at hand? That seems pretty harmless to me...

We have to stop doing this with the over analyzing each statement.

I feel like if coaches or players went up to the podium and said they were so distraught about their record this year that they're contemplating offing themselves with a hand gun, there's be threads on here full of people saying that if they REALLY cared they'd do it with a shotgun.

Don’t forget the quote where he told the reporters to be thankful and proud that the players showed up to work

I'm not doubting he said it, but would love to have heard the whole bit. With how things get edited and agendacized (my term for it), not saying it happened, but happens a lot. Over the years ESPECIALLY when texting people, I have noticed context gets lost a lot. People misread into what is being said. He could have been like the cynic/negative person I am and being facetious, or he could have meant it for real. Tone means a lot also. That being said, he could have probably gone ahead and not said something like that. Over his head in this so far **** storm he is. Wish SB had not left. I don't get the whole wanting to make something of his own from under his daddy's shadow. He worked with BB for how ever long and once BB left, could have made it his own. Must've been a bit of hostility I can imagine in their ****uation. That and saw the incoming ****storm.

I understand what you’re saying, and that does happen, but this is not a case of it. He ranted about teaching the fundamentals “every day” and then said he’s proud of the guys for showing up to work every day and then told the reporters that they, too, should be thankful that they show up.

Covington:
"We work those fundamentals every day, so, and we'll continue to work on it. And I'm proud of the way the guys show up to work every day. And you guys should be proud of those guys the way they show up to work every day."

What you're saying isn't what he said.

100% this. In the piece linked in the OP Covington also added:
“So, trying to get a W. That’s how I look at it, I’m trying to get a W. That’s the most important thing to me, is winning.”

That bastard, it's blindfold and cigarette time

Unlike some other posters, I know the Pats have not become the Jete. Some of their supposed 'fans' though, they're definitely morphing into Jete fan territory. After 20 years of unheard of success the team is stumbling a bit in finding its way forward. By all means let's behave like a bunch of entitled children about it and take offense to every random comment.

Gotcha! Thanks for the quote! Yea definitely should have not gone on about that. The difference in the abilities of past and present coaches to talk to the media is night and day. As much as some people hated BB's pressers, he knew what to say. That goes for all the coaches now, not just Covington. You have elite consummate pro vs peewee assistant coaches.

How is the bourbon this evening? Maybe a second glass? Pats fans are morphing into JETE fan territory? That is very harsh. Maybe a third glass? Or the whole bottle?
