When you are bottom 5 in the league, you sometimes have to take small gambles. This is one of those gambles where it’s worth the risk IMHO. The money really isn’t that bad considering our cap situation over the next 2-3 years.

I say you you try to turn him into a matchup DB /#2 , look for a bigger DB later in the draft, and let Gonzo be the premier matchup guy when needed per game plan, and use the rest of our DB’s as needed.

I lean toward $5M guaranteed being too much for a guy who‘s played so poorly so far. He’s a Marco Wilson level of player, with the downside of being so skinny and the supposed upside of intercepting a bunch of passes in college.

I think people get too caught up in immediate availability sometimes. Guys available to claim off waivers get overrated the same way supplemental draft prospects do. Sure, the Pats can claim Forbes on Monday if the teams ahead of them pass. They could also wait until March and probably get a comparable player for the same 2025 salary without having to guarantee 2026 in the process.

It’s a gamble either way.

If they wait until March they then have to spend a draft pick on that gamble when they have so many other needs.

Claiming him now is a gamble that does not cost a scarce draft pick, just some of Kraft’s $$$

Dew Allar might be the best QB in the draft. I would wager he might be the only good QB to come out of this draft.
Will be interesting to see where the QB's fall.
We need to be taking a hard look at signing forbes.. he was waived by Washington. Sures up a big need for us at CB. The offseason theoretically needs to start now!

There must be more to the story. But we have to put a claim in on him. Forbes across from Gonzo. Add a top DL with Barmore, White, and Jennings and we might have a defense again. Need a FS and a new defensive coordinator.
Yeah I agree with this 100%. Forbes would help solve the CB hole. Need another DL and a quality true FS, and obviously replace Covington. Probably need a little more LB depth. But all of those things can definitely be found in free agency and the Pats will have boatloads of cash.

Bring him in, why not, Jones is gone soon so you have a spot.
However, first rounders cut that quick usually are cut that quick for a reason.

He isn't a fit in the new Washington system... also he got hurt last season I believe as well. He's a man corner like gonzo is.. yeah j. Jones excellent patriots player and person in general. But either it's free safety next season or I believe he hangs it up.

Or traded quickly.

The Saints drafted Brandon Cooks and traded him to the Pats, who also traded him.

All on his first contract.

Why did no one keep him long term?

Is that bad?

Are the Pats much better?

2018 Wynn - FA
2019 Harry - Traded
2020 No pick
2021 Mac - Traded
2022 Strange - PUP (Oft injured)
2023 Gonzalez

He’s 166 lbs. That's a big issue

Agreed there he is pretty small. Hopefully he can bulk up to play at least about 180 where he should be..
Why would you want a bulky corner? Gaining weight isn’t best for 80% of his game.

That's not a bulky CB it's a strong CB and able to jam WRs off the line.

No, he would still be tiny and lose speed and quickness. Putting weight on a 166 lb beanpole doesn’t make him strong and able to jam WRs.
Washington gave up on him in a year and a half.

The team needs to really be looking at trying to get demarcus Lawrence in FA as well.

I see it as a take it or leave it thing. He has shown enough talent that you can justify taking the risk at his salary,** but his getting cut so soon is a big enough red flag on its own to justify not doing it.

**They were willing to pay similar amounts to Osborn and Okorafor. . . .
