I've defended the decision to punt on cap space this year. Or at least I've understood the logic in rolling it over and been willing to accept it. They still should have been able to find some contributors. Not even saying home runs... the Antonio Gibson deal is an example of finding a decent player young enough to give a multi year deal and be able to head into next year with positions filled at some baseline level of talent. Yet he was the only such player they signed and we'll once again head into next offseason with gaping holes and talent deficiency all over the roster. Of course the fact that they couldn't find one single (positively) contributing player in the draft after Maye contributes to that.
It often gets said that this offseason was a success if Maye is a good pick and everything else fails. And that may be true. Maye looks like a QB worth building around which means we're infinitely better off. But that doesn't mean that the GM is doing a good job or proving he should be here long term. He's been a total failure in all of his other moves and that makes me think we should go get someone else. I didn't expect him to move mountains and I do give him credit for not talking himself out of Maye, but not making a single other good move is hugely concerning considering the tons of cap space he had and the fact he was picking high in rounds.
By this logic Belichick would have been fired his first season in New England.
