I've defended the decision to punt on cap space this year. Or at least I've understood the logic in rolling it over and been willing to accept it. They still should have been able to find some contributors. Not even saying home runs... the Antonio Gibson deal is an example of finding a decent player young enough to give a multi year deal and be able to head into next year with positions filled at some baseline level of talent. Yet he was the only such player they signed and we'll once again head into next offseason with gaping holes and talent deficiency all over the roster. Of course the fact that they couldn't find one single (positively) contributing player in the draft after Maye contributes to that.

It often gets said that this offseason was a success if Maye is a good pick and everything else fails. And that may be true. Maye looks like a QB worth building around which means we're infinitely better off. But that doesn't mean that the GM is doing a good job or proving he should be here long term. He's been a total failure in all of his other moves and that makes me think we should go get someone else. I didn't expect him to move mountains and I do give him credit for not talking himself out of Maye, but not making a single other good move is hugely concerning considering the tons of cap space he had and the fact he was picking high in rounds.

By this logic Belichick would have been fired his first season in New England.

And if it was such a lay up why was Belichick against the pick?

Had Belichick still been the one doing their drafting then Maye would be elsewhere .
BB was against the Maye pick?

So you just make up weird scenarios in your mind and post them? Odd…

They attempted to sign Ridley and had the best offer for Aiyuk, but both declined. In the end, bith WR’s did the Pats a solid - especially Aiyuk.

Although they handled the situation poorly, getting rid of Judon was a good move. That guy has been horrible this season and just got benched.

I’m going to take this week as a positive sign, potentially, they showed a little fight. They had a reasonable amount of penalties, blocked/tackled/covered a little better.

Let’s see if this is a trend, or a one off.

You mean like Trey Lance was a layup at 3, or Sach Wilson at 2? You mean lay ups like those?

For anyone who doesn’t agree with this, Belichick criticized Maye and the pick on Macafee’s podcast. He would have traded out of 3 if had still been here.

Belichick said so on Macafee’s podcast.

He didn't have to wait long to offer up his take on New England drafting Maye. Belichick said that quarterback was certainly a top need for the Patriots -- along with tackle and wide receiver -- and that Maye is a "very talented kid" with good size and a good arm. He also said that Maye can run well, but that he does it too often.

Belichick also sounds concerned about Maye's lack of experience, after just two full seasons (and a redshirt freshman year) at North Carolina.

"He hasn't played very much. He really doesn't have a lot of experience. He's going to need some work in reading defenses, reading coverages," said Belichick. "He's kind of quick to bail out of the pocket. He's going to need to hang in there a little bit longer and find those receivers."

While many are sold on Maye's upside and what he could become in the NFL, Belichick doesn't sound very convinced.

"Drake compares himself a lot of Josh Allen -- we'll see about that," said Belichick. "There are some similarities in terms of size, but Josh Allen is a special player.

"This is a kid that can make all the throws, he just needs to be more consistent," Belichick added.

Belichick was also critical of Maye's footwork in the pre-draft portion of the show, which was one of the concerns scouts and pundits voiced leading up to the draft.

Maye certainly has some work to do in order to succeed at the NFL level. But the Patriots sound confident that he'll put in the work to become the best quarterback that he can be, and they'll do everything they can to make sure he is in a spot to succeed.

As usual Wozzy can’t handle the truth, so he just makes **** up.

Feel free to go listen to Belichick talk about it on Macafee’s podcast.

Sunday was more - far more - about da Bears' injury issues along the OL and PsychoBarbiie's cluelessness than anything the Pats presented them.

My money's on the one-off.

I wouldn't read too much into that regarding Bill and Maye. We needed a QB, like really bad, we had a chance to get into that first tier of QBs and we were going to select one from those 3. Which ever one was left over thats who we were going to take. So i wouldn't pat Wolf on the back for a genius move for taking Maye, nor would I jump all over Bill for saying what he did regarding Maye. When it came down to it and that third pick of the draft if he was in charge of that draft he probably would have picked Maye all the same. And he would have stood up there and said, that Maye was a big strong kid, excellent arm, can run the ball well. And never heard anything about his private concerns about Maye.

Comparing him to Josh Allen after 4 starts seems to be premature anyways. Just ask those folks who were compaing Caleb Williams to Pat Mahomes in week 6. Now after week 10, not so much !!

Yep. He said his footwork is all over the place and that he was more or less raw
Belichick said that Maye has the physical tools to play quarterback, but the 22-year-old needs a lot of work elsewhere before he is ready to see action in the NFL.

Yes, a one-off. We are a bottom third team, likely to win 2-3 more games.

He didn’t say he hated him, but he clearly wouldn’t have picked him.

No he wouldn’t have picked Maye. If he had thought it was a good pick he would have said so. And the Josh Allen comparisons are completely valid, as Maye was a better prospect coming out of college than Allen was, as Allen had serious accuracy issues at Wyoming, and that rarely translates to a good pro career. And the size, arm strength and athletic ability are very similar. Belichick might have taken Maye had he been able to trade back into the 20’s and still get him, but there was no way with his comments that he was taking him at 3. He made it clear he didn’t think he was anything special, and you don’t use the #3 pick unless you believe the player is special. Beyond that Belichick’s track record with QB picks after Brady was bad.

He would have taken the Giants trade thinking Alt would be there at 6
Alt was a blue chip prospect

I think that would have been the most likely outcome. And he would have tried to sign Mayfield as a free agent to address QB.
