As others have pointed out, we have newbies at HC and both coordinator positions (and ST coach, too), with Mayo not even having experience calling games himself. One big question has been whether playing a raw Maye would ruin him or if he should learn on the job, take his lumps and improve from there. In a way we have the same issue with the coaching staff. Why there wasn’t an experienced person on the staff is a darn good question. But at this point the hope is they got a half season’s worth of lumps, and have now realized what they’re doing wrong and will grow with it.
Yesterday was the first time in a while I saw a plan on offense that made sense and routes that looked reasonable, and they weren’t predicable and even had a trick play. And they actually played the offensive line combo that had the most success this season rather than ditching it like they did before. That’s progress. They played an aggressive defense and when they saw the Bears line having problems and Williams’ reaction to it, they doubled down on the pressure instead of backing off, and they had an unorthodox defensive scheme with Schooler that caught the opponent off guard and worked. That’s progress. And the team is fighting hard instead of having given up, which they easily could have done after the Jacksonville game.
We need that consistency though. Anyone can put one good game plan together and make good in game adjustments once. Let’s hope the staff is gaining its foothold and learning, and that this wasn’t an aberration.
