AFC Scout: Pats are a disorganized program

Your right there. It is up the the coaching staff to put players into positions of strength. Not making any excuses for the defense but they are asking 3rd and 4th string guys and practice squad guys to play major roles. If they were performing this badly say with Barmore, peppers, dugger Bentley in the line up...then yeah I fully put it on the staff alone.
Yesterday was the first real game that I thought the coaches contributed to success.

Week 1, and the Jets game I could also give them credit for as well as Sundays game.

Bengals and Jets could have and should have won those games. Yesterday they pushed all the right buttons against a weakened and demoralized team. Let's see what they can do against a real coach and QB. I don't know how healthy the Rams are, but they won't be anything like the Bears.

Wich is surprising be the Bears have a loaded roster across the board I believe eberflus isn't long as HC personally. The defense is gr for them and they have play makers all over on offense. Stafford is a ball. I think gonzo can lock up cupp but it's the other CB spots that leave us vulnerable. Stafford isn't a runner so the front will have chances at him.

I think we've turned the corner to respectability. It's not surprising that it would take the first half of the season to adjust to all the new-ness and play through all the injuries on both sides of the ball. We've won 2 of the last 3, with the L being in OT. We're gonna beat the Rams Sunday, will win 3 more to finish 7-10, and the 2 killer losses to Seattle and Miami will cost us the 7th seed.

The inconsistency with this team is an indictment on the coaching staff. There's enough talent in there to play well, look like an NFL team and we've seen it in stretches, but they're not conistent enough because the coaches have not done a good enough job, especially on defense.
As others have pointed out, we have newbies at HC and both coordinator positions (and ST coach, too), with Mayo not even having experience calling games himself. One big question has been whether playing a raw Maye would ruin him or if he should learn on the job, take his lumps and improve from there. In a way we have the same issue with the coaching staff. Why there wasn’t an experienced person on the staff is a darn good question. But at this point the hope is they got a half season’s worth of lumps, and have now realized what they’re doing wrong and will grow with it.

Yesterday was the first time in a while I saw a plan on offense that made sense and routes that looked reasonable, and they weren’t predicable and even had a trick play. And they actually played the offensive line combo that had the most success this season rather than ditching it like they did before. That’s progress. They played an aggressive defense and when they saw the Bears line having problems and Williams’ reaction to it, they doubled down on the pressure instead of backing off, and they had an unorthodox defensive scheme with Schooler that caught the opponent off guard and worked. That’s progress. And the team is fighting hard instead of having given up, which they easily could have done after the Jacksonville game.

We need that consistency though. Anyone can put one good game plan together and make good in game adjustments once. Let’s hope the staff is gaining its foothold and learning, and that this wasn’t an aberration.

Yes your right. The organized tanking that season who could forget where painter drew all over our defense thst game at Gillette
@maust referring to the 2011 season when we played indy Curtis painter was the QB and he lit the defense up that game..

This team isn't very talented, there are tons of key injuries, we have a rookie QB, the entire coaching staff was new.

The team is also 1 win away from matching Bill's record last year with 7 games left in the season. There was always going to be a growing pains period with this regime. They still might not work out. But the fanbase needed a little patience.

I just pray we don’t ruin Drake. He can be a top 10 QB in this league if the org plays their cards right.
Drake wasn’t considered ready to start when he came in and yet he has far exceeded those expectations.

Should there be a little credit thrown in the direction of McAdoo who was brought in as the “QB whisperer”?

They’ve clearly done a good job helping him develop into a ready made NFL QB in a short time frame.

The coaches seem to be improving, but just as importantly, the D has adjusted to the losses of 3 key guys, and the OL has stabilized.

Others in this thread have covered some of what I am going to mention and thank to those that did for injecting some sanity into the discussion. Below are some rhetorical questions that you all know the answer too but I think some folks are forgetting.

- This was a 4-13 Team without a league average Qb, it got out scored by 130+ points. How many starters from last year would have started on the Bills? So you fire and dismantle a front office run by the same person for 20yrs and fire (deserving I think at that point) a HOF coach, rebuild a front office and basically hire a new coaching staff.

- So you the GM inherit a team devoid on talent and you have a rebuild on your hands.

- You draft a potential franchise QB whose only negative I ever saw was he needs more work. He was also the youngest 1st RD QB and has room to grow significantly.

- You have issues getting FA's to come because you not a great football team and they can make the similar money on better teams, many in low tax states.

- If you can't get the FA's you want you don't overspend and field a roster with slightly more potential talent then last year but, you have 30 mil to carry over to next years cap because you did not overpay.

- You aren't winning a Super Bowl so you trade veterans for more draft picks

The above is not really just my opnion there a lot of facts there. So how it the front office doing a bad job?

The coaching staff does have room for improvement but again so many negative nelly's.

- Do you remember the play calling of the last few years? AVP is arguable the best OC we have a had in a bit.

- Yes, the coaching staff has to continue to learn and jell but you know what if Mayo wins one more game he equals BB last season.

All I am saying is the Coaching Staff and Front Office deserve some critisism but last year was a poop show and we are in the middle of a top to bottom rebuild. Give the front office and the coach some time.

Note:
AVP coached offense.................averaging 16 pts/game
Fat Matt coached offense.........averaged 21.4 pts/game

I’m just hoping Mayo gets fired. If they could do it in-season, even better. But my gut tells me he is already guaranteed a second season at a minimum.
I will feel a lot better about next season if Kraft cleans house and turns the operation over to someone with real experience and success in the NFL, and who has a Rolodex of like skilled people who want to come on board.

Ref pts, I agree. No issues. I understand the facts and AVP is not done with this year to be fair. Are you saying the play calling was better with "Magic Matt"???? That is not what my eyes see/saw.

GR8 you have been a fan for a long time, fire everyone and get better is a really easy arguement. So lets go with your thought. "Who is coming through that door" next. Critizing is easy offering alternatives that are realistic is harder. Who's better and available?

How many of those points were a result of “Fat Matt’s” offense versus the defense getting turnovers and good field position? Not to mention there was actually some talent and decent players on that offense compared to what we have now.

Matt Patricia was an absolute abomination. Whatever AVP’s flaws he is an offensive coach.

Good question.

It worked with BB, but we may have gotten lucky.

Still, the method that Kraft is using now, and the basis for hiring a HC, were less than optimal.

Imagine luring someone like Howie Rosenthal away from the Eagles.

Would be nice to turn back the clock and get in on Adam Peters. Looks like it is working for Washington.

At least now, the team has time to do some homework on this.

Didn't the TV announcer yesterday say this AVP led offense leads the league in "3 and outs" ?

Note: NE is #1 (tie) in total punts this season (50)
